The purpose of the Aperture Portfolio Prize is to identify trends in contemporary photography and highlight artists whose work deserves greater recognition. When choosing the first-prize winner and runners-up, Aperture’s editorial and curatorial staff look for innovative bodies of work that haven’t been widely seen in major publications or exhibition venues.

The first-prize winner receives $3,000 and has his or her work exhibited at Aperture. The winner and up to five runners-up are featured on Aperture’s website, accompanied by a brief statement written by Aperture’s staff. All winners are announced in the foundation’s e-newsletter, which reaches forty thousand subscribers, including writers, critics, and other members of Aperture’s global community. The winners also have the opportunity to offer their prints for sale to Aperture’s collectors and patrons through our limited-edition print program.

Entries for the 2013 Aperture Portfolio Prize can be submitted from Monday, January 7, through Thursday, February 28, at 12:00 noon EDT, at callforentry.org. The winners and runners-up will be announced in July. For specific details, see the Guidelines and FAQs pages.

Big ups to Danny Cohen, a Melbourne photographer who is "new in town". He sent out a personalised pop up/diorama promo to select ad agency creatives. This innovative idea has certainly gotten the creatives hard earned attention.

It certainly pays to think outside the square (or rectangle)....

Head On Photo Festival will return 17 May - 23 June 2013, with another instalment of the largest photo festival in Australia. With over 600,000 visits in 2012, Head On is set to make an even bigger transformation of the Sydney environment, encompassing exhibitions, events, education and public debate, over 5 weeks.

Creative Spotlight is a monthly celebration of The Loop community’s creativity. The Loop invites you to submit your work for consideration. Each month The Loop welcome's a new industry of creatives to enter by sending a link to their profile. The more recent the projects the better so make sure you upload your latest and greatest to your The Loop profile if it’s not already on there. A guest judge from your industry will select a winner from the entries and write a short review on what impressed/inspired/delighted them about the project. The winner and their work will be featured in the Creative Spotlight section of The Loop’s blog, as well as on The Loop’s featured portfolios page and social media channels (Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn). That’s a lot of eyeballs on your work, not to mention the kudos of being selected by one of the industry’s finest. This month, the guest judges are: Andrew Johnstone of Design is Kinky, Semi-Permanent, Take Magazine and Empty Magazine.

What do you think of the new US Olympics team portraits?

I wonder what went wrong here... Was it the wrong photographers for the brief, lack of budget/ production value or just plain old bad photography?

On such a high profile job with worldwide reach its such a shame that the photographer wasn't able to push the creative to achieve something memorable (memorable - in a good way). Opportunity lost.

Sydney Life is a major component of the City of Sydney’s annual Art & About Sydney festival. The exhibition features large format photographic works along the beautiful central walkway of Hyde Park North.

The Sydney Life Prize will be awarded for the most outstanding work in the exhibition, as decided by a distinguished panel of judges. The Sydney Life Prize is valued at $10,000.

The judges are not looking for stereotypical or commercial images. Please avoid work that feeds into clichés (eg. sunsets over the Sydney Harbour Bridge or sunset beach scenes). Images must be supplied as a digital file and may be colour or black and white.

Submissions must be made online by 5pm Friday 29 June 2012.
