If you’re looking for drama, humour and a soundtrack you can bop your head to then Straight Outta Compton is a must-see title. Even if you’re not familiar with N.W.A. or their story, Straight Outta Compton is an engaging film in its own right giving you an insight into the lives of the biggest gangster Rap group of all time.
Produced by Ice Cube, Dr Dre, Tomica Woods -Wright (Widow of Easy E) and directed by F Gary Grey, The film is an electrifying piece of Hip Hop history that captures and invigorates the oppression that people in the USA had to face in the 80′s. It’s the kind of film that will have you leaving the cinema screaming “F**K THE POLICE!”. With scenes of police brutality that will leave you feeling extremely uncomfortable and angry showing that almost 35 years later not much has changed.
You can't help but think though, that parts of the story were over sanitised and lacked edge. N.W.A. were a powerful and controversial group and the film doesn't reflect this enough. But this is something that can be overlooked as we are compensated by the great performances from Oshea Jackson (Ice Cube) Corey Hawkins (Dr Dre) and Jason Mitchell (Eazy E) who really light up the screen, bringing energy and vitality to the film.
Straight Outta Compton is a hugely entertaining film that works best if you don’t look at it too closely and just listen.
