And so...

Everyone from family members ,real life friends and to facebook friends have been rubbing it in my face at how they have seen and loved the latest and final Harry Potter installment. I on the other hand have qualms as to when and where I get to watch this beloved movie. I grew up with Harry, I literally was the same age they were when the whole thing started (I dont mean to sound all territorial) but its true. I read all the books and religiously have been eagerly anticipating for the movies. Now that it has come to this, the final, the conclusion and etc..Everyone and I mean everyone should at least understand as to why I want to prolong the journey more by simply waiting for the right time to see it.. 

I need to prepare my mind, my body and as well as my heart before the movie. But after days and days of contemplating and my mum's arrival from her holiday, I think I might just be able to, now that..

This is what's left of my beloved Borders bookstore at Parramatta, the scene was too upsetting for me- all those relaxing nostalgic moments gone and replaced with closing down sales and signs made me literally sick to my stomach.. Another great read from Murakami! I tried to control myself in reading this only when I was on public transport- this way I could prolong the M.journey, instead of just devouring it in one sitting.

My love for it ,stems from Haruki's very interesting scenarios laden with ambiguos endings. As well as a comical if not cinematic approach to mundane tasks and everyday human behaviours. I laughed my heart out when I read about the Mc.Donald's incident and the dire need to consume a number of big macs due to cravings. Initially I have regarded myself as the woman from Sleep and the way she had found some sort of freedom while others are deep in their slumber. I have no trouble sleeping, but in saying that, I also have no trouble not sleeping. It goes both ways- at times I can even go and function normally without 3 or more days of sleep. However, I would have hated to follow that woman's demise (>__<).

Despite what I would've liked as a central story connecting all the other stories, I felt that the book has ultimately served its purpose- to have but a glimpse of the different facets we as human beings experience.

How much is your soul worth? 

This book was the third book I have read by Maureen Johnson. While the two previous ones; 13 little Blue envelopes and the last little blue envelope was more leaning towards 'realistic' fiction, Devilish was more directed towards the supernatural. 

Jane Jarvis and Alison Concord are both seniors at Saint Teresa's Preparatory School for Girls. Jane, the main protagonist is strong willed, smart and stubborn, while her best friend Alison is somewhat of a nervous wreck, always wanting to become more popular .The pair have always been close and open but after an embarrassing day involving Alison and puke, everything changes.. Suddenly Alison has the right hairstyle,is wearing the right clothes, becoming more confident and etc. It doesn't take Jane to figure out something is a miss and with the help of a wise freshman Owen, they both encounter something out of this world. 

It did take me sometime to get into the story, this book is definitely something different from Johnson's previous work. The synopsis from the book was definitely intriguing enough, but personally I felt that while reading the book there were in parts wherein I got confused and hard to follow, but despite that, the book is comical and has an air of sarcasm, laden with dark comedy- and in true johnson style puts us (the readers) back into perspective. 

I picked this book up because I wanted to read more of Maureen Johnson's work and I was lucky enough to have my local library stock both this and Girl at Sea (which I will be reading after). Despite not being able to fully appreciate Devilish, I still hold true to the value of 'read at your own choice'  and will recommend it to all readers, just because it has some pretty funny and girl power scenes.

What is literature, really? Boiled down to a single sentence, I'd say it's this: a endless conversation about what it means to be human. And to read literature is to engage in that conversation. There seems to be a growing tendency among people to disengage: with the ideas, with the world around them, with other people, with their own feelings. To say whatever, because it's easier than actually caring. I find this attitude, and its mass appeal, very unsettling. Fear—something we've experienced a lot of in the last year—only heightens that urge to turn off and withdraw, to choose not to extend oneself. But great books force people to engage in the human conversation. They teach empathy and they teach compassion. They remind us of all the words there are beyond whatever.
