Sing Statistics

You Are The Friction

Sing Statistics (aka Jez Burrows & Lizzy Stewart) have just produced their fourth publication and released it into the world. ‘You Are The Friction’ is the 3rd version of an ongoing collaborative project, bringing together illustrators and short fiction writers — in this case, 12 short stories inspired by illustrations and 12 illustrations inspired by short stories.

“It's a small, bright red record of what happens when you introduce twelve writers to twelve illustrators, light a match, and run in the opposite direction”.

Carl Kleiner has a portfolio full of both clever and beautiful imagery. He first came to my attention with his “Homemade Is Best” copy-less cookbook for Ikea, and continues to update his site with interesting projects, consisting mainly of still life and product photography.

Paul X. Johnson Illustrations

Paul X. Johnson is a London-based illustrator. I’ve previously been made aware of his work through editorial commissions for Little White Lies, and it’s due to the magazine celebrating it’s 50th issue that I’ve been reminded of him once again. His muted, sophisticated and often sinister portraits are lovely to look through.

Malika Favre Illustrations

Malika is a French illustrator/Art director based in London. Between 2006-2011, she worked at Airside, a brilliant multidisciplinary design studio. Malika developed an extensive portfolio at Airside which led to collaborations with many high profile magazines and clients, including Wallpaper and The Sunday Times. Most recently, Malika has been showing off her Kama Sutra Project at Pick Me Up 2013.

    "My approach to illustration is about paring things down as much as possible. I try and get to the essence of my subject by using as few lines and colours as it needs to convey the core of the idea."

Windows of New York José Guízar

The 'Windows of New York' project is a great weekly update by NYC-based Graphic Designer, José Guízar, who spends his time "staring creepily at windows" (his words, not ours!). It's a beautifully illustrated study that highlights some of the diverse architectural nuances dotted across the big apple.

Handmade Wooden Sunglasses Barrow & Flux

Justin Barrow and Christian Flux design and produce their sunnies in Weymouth, using English Ash wood which is sourced and kiln dried in Dorset. “Creating a local sustainable business in England will ensure the future of communities, our families and our friends, be them old and new”. The production is responsibly managed and sustainably sourced throughout, using a local optometrist for their 100% UV protected lenses. “Our motivation lies in the ‘Made in England’ ethos – it means everything to us. We’re proud of it. Barrow & Flux is a quintessential English brand, so we are motivated to put something back, something for the future. Something for England.” Barrow & Flux's first collection will be launched to retailers for spring/summer 2013.

ísland Maroesjka Lavigne

Lavigne finished her Photography masters at Ghent University last summer, and since then she's been exhibiting left, right & centre. For ‘ísland’, she spent four months in Iceland during 2012 "driving on her own through the desolate snow-covered and blossoming landscapes of winter and spring, looking for those moments when colour, light and the subject merge into the perfect image". She self-published the fruits of her travels as a book (200 copies) called ‘ísland’, for sale on her website. Beautiful work!

Kit Julia

'Kit' is the beautifully bold book from Julia, aka Valerio Di Lucente (Italy), Erwan Lhuissier (France) and Hugo Timm (Brazil). It contains simple abstracted representations of the shirts from 250 prominent football clubs. Kit comes in three different sizes: small, medium and large. Tulip Fields Normann Szkop

Taken from a Cesna by French photographer Normann Szkop, these photographs of tulip fields in Anna Paulowna, a town in North Holland, are amazing! The neatly planted rows create huge carpets of block colour. Szkop also has a 100+ photograph set over on Flickr.

Bonobo 'Cirrus' Video Cyriak

Awesome (in the truest sense) video for Bonobo's new track 'Cirrus'. Beautiful retro footage + clever editing is always a winner, and the Richard Hamilton-style collages built up into almost kaleidoscopic forms are just fascinating. Good work!

This is an ongoing personal project from Jon Bland at Music, and consists of 7 creatives re-imagining the concept of No Fly Posters. Their prints are then pasted up on an abandoned building in Manchester. A great way of turning quite a depressing situation into a public gallery space, displaying some talented creatives! Should I Be Afraid Of The Future? Bold Futures

"Will we survive the end of this year? And if we do, what's next lurking around the corner? What is science fiction, what is science fact? Join us in exploring the world of existential risks."

2012 is coming to a close, and the future is uncertain (but mainly in the sense that we don't know if we'll get the Christmas shopping done in time). Nevertheless, Bold Futures have researched and developed the concept  'Should I Be Afraid Of The Future?', alongside Envisioning Technology, who crafted it all into a poster, and Ana Viegas, who expanded it into the website. The site has an interesting way of navigating and ordering all the information, and a good dollop of humour. Good work.
