i second this
outrageous, it’s blue
Math is blue and science is purple .
No it’s red
Yellow you imbeciles
Yellow. Science was green (chlorophyll) , Social Studies was Blue (bodies of water on maps), and Reading was red (homophone).
You know the one who’s mother died
Guess what screencap redraw AGAIN 🌙
i looked up New Math after reblogging a recent post that explained it and gosh… is this really what Math is nowadays… please tell me this is only one method and not the prescribed mandatory method students have to deal with cause the Old Math method is not only quicker but also, efficient. and when you reach higher levels of Math, the New Math Method will screw you over tenfold because of how long the process is omg
i dont mean to start discourse on Maths but since we are on the topic today, and i love Maths or Math (depending where you live), so i’ll say my two cents too..
i really think the common core Math is unneeded because if at the end, you are going to learn the standard method or the “old Math” then wouldn’t it be better that children already learn the standard method as soon as they can?
of course you will start with the basics and single digit problems then progress to double then single, then doubles as you climb higher. in this way, you are honing the principles you’ve learned and through repetition, you can master the processes
the way to be good at Math is practice, practice, practice. i don’t see how it is practical to teach the common core method for problems like the New Maths method when the most efficient way is to just learn the standard from the beginning and practice that until you master it and get prepared to do the next level
but i do see how the distributive method can help with Mental calculations. so for 35 x 12. i’d just think (35 x 10) + (35 x 2) which is easier to do in my head cause 350 + 70 would be easier to answer mentally
but yeah, i feel the process the teacher showed is really long that trying to form that box in your head will still be complex. I think the Distributive Method is good but it should be a separate module probably on making Mental calculations with Math
although, in university-level Math, you’d use a calculator eventually. i guess the distributive property would be useful when you have to do groceries and dont have access to a calculator and need to see how much 12 pieces of a $35 item could cost. idk what else but yeah
i still think that the Standard Math should be the priority and be learned asap then this New Maths method should be a bonus
that is a valid argument i guess. i tutor Math too on the side to elementary and highschool kids and i never even knew New Maths existed until now and i taught the standard way, as how i learned it, to them even though they havent learned the process in school yet. and it has really helped them raise their grade. and i’ve gotten big thanks from the parents and glowing reviews in their assessments. so i feel if a kid is struggling with Math, it’s because they needed more guidance or a teacher to explain the concept to them.
but if i were to argue against New Math, i’d probably end up arguing with Educators who have performed studies on it, that’s why they’ve implemented it. so i guess i shouldnt argue in the first place.
but anyway, i still grew up loving Math. the only time i feel i hate it is when im really confused and dont understand a concept, but a change of perspective helped me solidify my love for Math
as soon as i started seeing Math as a universal language and a game where you can always win, then i have since seen it as enjoyable. it’s objective, not subjective. if you ever struggle, you just have to play with it more until you fully master the concept that it becomes instinctive. i feel if we can teach people that Math is not something you should be scared about and to be seen as games of logic, which apply to everyday life, then that could make it fun while helping students get a clearer perspective and make it easier to retain information
i might have gone off a tangent there, but i mentioned that because i really think that how it is taught matters more than the methods being taught.
sure New Math has its pros but i also think it has its cons, which need to be mentioned. i really think the Standard Math can still be fun and understandable for children
Any person who is actually good at math will immediately understand why common core is good and better for kids. As a mathematics major and having taken advanced math courses consistently with the same group of 30 friends and peers since 6th grade all the way through highschool it is obvious (ty American school system of isolating separate learning paths…). So now into junior year of University, to me the relationship numbers have is obvious and easy to see. But the relationship of numbers wont be obvious to a lot of kids and yeah eventually most people kinda see it, but odds areonly those who are naturally inclined in seeing numerical patterns will make those connections. So by having common core taught to elementary age children we are increasing chances of success for later higher level math, and we’ll have fewer people say “I’m bad at math, I’m just not a number person” when they’re in highschool struggling to understand and getting their self-confidence beaten to shreds when they’re literally just trying their hardest to pass and not cry over their homework assignment on a Tuesday night.
Plus, there will also be less people at the grocery store in my way directly in front of the canned soup when they can’t seem to figure out the basic math of which is the better deal of a $3.45 10oz. can of soup verse the store brand of $2.90 8oz. can of soup.
wow did you just insinuate i’m not actually good at math? lmao
but anyway, your argument seems valid on how common core math could be helpful. i might have to just look through some methods or topics and see if it gives me an increased appreciation and better understanding of numbers and their relationship, which can be applicable to higher levels of uni math
dont knock it til i try it i guess lol
Hey! 4th grade teacher, here. May I start by saying how good it makes me feel that we can have a discussion about teaching methods involving all kinds of thoughts and opinions? I appreciate talking through pros and cons of these different methods, since we (teachers) basically steal what works well and use that to help the full spectrum of our kiddos.
I have students who love all 3 ways to do multi-digit multiplication I’ve seen in this post. The goal is for the kids to find a method that works for them. I feel that the “new maths” box method is just a stepping stone for kids to understand the distributive method. The standard algorithm ends up being nice for kids who memorize processes easier, while the box and distributive methods lend themselves to mental math. The box method also helps kids understand multiplication through the lens of place value and gives a visual representation, so I appreciate that for my visual learners. All in all, use the method you like the most. ☺️
Also, that video pisses me the hell off, since the person using the standard algorithm isn’t explaining each step and why each step is important to understanding the whole problem, as the person using the box method is being forced to do. They aren’t comparing apples to apples, so fuck them.
i am begging everyone to watch this video right now

bad ending: i refuse the requests of my friends and family to move closer, alone in a town where nothing but a dead-end job awaits me. i continue a life of pretending that i have a social life to avoid suspicion and pity. i live paycheck-to-paycheck while saving just enough to buy even more unplayable board games to clutter the house. i live out my days never putting my time and effort into something that outlasts me.
good ending: i find the perfect teaching position within a comfortable distance of everyone i love. my parents and i adopt corgi siblings. we name them peanut, butter, and jelly. i take jelly so peanut and butter are together, but it’s a perfect trio when i visit. my husband and i return to the same spot in york, maine, where we got married and we share a salted caramel cone every friday while looking out at the ocean wondering what colored tails we would have as mermaids.
true ending: i am offered the position of the person who actually cleans the mirror after a contestant is eliminated from rupaul’s drag race. i seriously consider it, then turn it down.
