I’m writing this post about the upcoming midterm elections on November 6th, in which I’ll be voting in the state of Tennessee. In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now. I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country. I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent.

I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love. Running for Senate in the state of Tennessee is a woman named Marsha Blackburn. As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn. Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me. She voted against equal pay for women. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. She also believes they should not have the right to marry. These are not MY Tennessee values. I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives. Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values. For a lot of us, we may never find a candidate or party with whom we agree 100% on every issue, but we have to vote anyway.

So many intelligent, thoughtful, self-possessed people have turned 18 in the past two years and now have the right and privilege to make their vote count. But first you need to register, which is quick and easy to do. October 9th is the LAST DAY to register to vote in the state of TN. Go to vote.org and you can find all the info. Happy Voting! 🗳😃🌈

To the girl who’s been here through it all ❤️

Taylor,

I was 11 years old having dance parties in my bedroom to Our Song over my CD player. Crying over my 5th grade crush to Teardrops On My Guitar. Jamming to Picture to Burn with my friends.

Then I was thirteen dreaming of a love like the one in Love Story. I heard the lyrics to Fifteen and didn’t yet know how important they would be to me in just a couple years. I danced around to You Belong With Me with my MP3 player.

Then I was fifteen and I thought I was in love and I would play Mine over and over and over. And then it ended and I cried to Last Kiss until there were no more tears. I listened to Long Live with my best friend in her car the night of her brother’s graduation and we laughed and cried and sang along so loud the whole town could hear.

Then I was a senior in high school and I heard All Too Well for the first time. It was then that I realized how much I loved words. That language is so beautiful. The poetic ballad that is All Too Well has been my favorite song since that day. All Too Well helped me decide to become an English teacher, inspired me to write more poetry, and was there for me when I was involved in a broken love just like the one in the song.

At undoubtedly the most difficult time in my life, I heard Shake It Off for the first time. I learned that sometimes all you can do is dance it out and move on. After a few months of trying times and many dancing sessions to 1989, I was finally clean. In July of 2015, I got to see you in concert for the first time and I truly was never the same after that in the best way possible.

Waiting three years for reputation made me appreciate all of those albums even more. When Look What You Made Me Do finally dropped, my heart was bursting with pride for you. I knew this era was going to be special.

Now I’m 23. My graduation is this Saturday, I have less than 4 weeks left of student teaching, and I’ll be applying for teaching jobs soon.

Last night was the opening night of the reputation Stadium Tour. I had to go to bed before you went on stage, but I woke up in the middle of the night to find out you played All Too Well and Long Live… the two most important songs to me. I’m going to be at Chicago Night 2 on June 2nd, the day after my student teaching placement ends, and I just know it’s going to be a night for the books. I’m bringing my best friend Melanie. It’s her first Taylor show ever and I can’t wait to watch her experience the magic.

I hope that someday I can give you a hug and thank you for always being there for over half of my life. It might not be this era, but I won’t give up hope.

I love you, Taylor, and I can’t wait to scream along to every song on June 2nd with you, my best friend, and all of the Swifties at Soldier Field. ❤️ @taylorswift @taylornation
