Hello, everyone!

This is yet another custom MTG card contest, and those who have been following me know the deal for the most part. Still, some things have changed, so read everything clearly:

Reblog this post with your submissions, and you’re entered. Entries must be photos/renders. Text submissions will not be entered. Contact me for details.

Please, DO NOT reblog this post unless you are entering the contest OR signal boosting - and in the case of the latter, make sure that’s clarified in either tags or comments.

You must be following this Tumblr. If there’s a mix-up between main blogs and side blogs, tell me.

One entry per person. If you use multiple blogs with different entries, your submissions will be removed.

Art is not necessary. If you DO use art and do NOT have an artist, you will be banned and blocked.

PLEASE contact me as soon as possible if there is a barrier, issue, disability or other impediment preventing you from being able to enter this contest as it stands currently.

Now, there are some loose parts here, like if you can’t reblog for some reason or if you’d like to edit your submission after the fact or whatnot. I understand those minor things, y’know? Life goes on.

Now, for the rules and the prizes: For this contest you are making TWO cards! Two? Yes, two! Remember this post from a little while back? That was indeed a precursor to this contest! Or preview. Pre-something. Whatever.

Your task is to design two cards, one with a top-down design and one with a bottom-up design, both relating to a central theme, image, or motif. 

As you can see in the example, Burn After Reading and Koelma, the Lost Archive, are, respectfully, top-down and bottom-up, and both relate to libraries, books, reading, etc. Make sense? The overall winner will be decided based on overall design choices, thematic relevance, legibility and understanding, and an understanding of Magic’s principles.

The winner will receive their choice of either two (2) Modern Masters 2017 booster packs OR any number of Modern Masters 2017 singles up to a total value of $25.00 USD.

Vorthos Server Design Week 7 - Clones and Copies

Now this is what I like to see. One, that’s a fantastic use of the old border, and two, I love how it incorporates both areas of clone effects. A small nitpick would be to change the name clause in the ability to “this creature” but this is definitely a nice design.

At first I presumed this was a polymorph but an artifact, but as I read I realized this was a huge-way to clone big stuff with tons of tokens. Personally I’d change types to card types, and make it a it more expensive to so you don’t spend, say, 10 mana to make an army of Newlamog.

When I look at this I’m reminded of Sydri, but this time it’s for instants and sorceries. For a card name like that I’d suspect an artifact copying effect, and overall I’m disappointed.

Thid is a three mana reverberate/twincast with Storm, and that’s somewhat scary to me. This could get way too powerful somewhat easily, but it was a nice try either way.

To start, the two clauses can be put together. Second, this is very outside of Simic colors, and while I like the flavor, this would have been more fitting in White/Green.

This is a lot of text, but let’s break it down. First, the copy effect would be separate from Imprint, and the last ability would have to have a trigger at some point or an activation.

Otherwise, I like the idea, but it’s just not that interesting to me, but the flavor is slightly enjoyable.

Vorthos Design Competition Week 6 - Silver Border

Welcome to week 6! I’ve decided to consolidate posts from here on out, so from now on the winning card will be placed first, and each other submitted card will be listed afterwards. Thanks for understanding.

Continuing on! This week’s theme was silver bordered cards, so let’s see what we got!

I love the effort to make this look like a proxy for its own effect, and for that you’ve made a great step in the direction of an Un-card. Personally I thought this seems too easy to actually pull off, but otherwise I love the effort made and as such, this wins this week’s competiton!

It is a fact, I love puns. This card is a pun and I love it, but it seems a bit tame for a silver-bordered card at rare. Nice work nevertheless, and good choice on the art!

I like the idea, but the way this is worded is that you can switch two players in the same game, effectively playing against yourself and not having fun. Perhaps in two separate games and make people switcheroo more.

Small tidbit, cleric aren’t blue or green sans white. Moving on, I love the idea, and this becomes powerful in the hands of an MtG bookie with photographic memory. I hope this guy doesn’t create too many Mary Sue/Gary Stue OCs we’ll have to fight in the future.

Ah yes. The bane of any card game. Waiting. For a card that gives a clock to your opponent I’d at least put this at rare, and also because it’s a more oppressive effect that I find myself not liking (not because I take too long on my turns though :P).

To be honest I’m having a hard time deciding my thoughts on this card. On one hand its silver border so this makes sense, but it’s not exactly the most fun silver border, you know? It’s alright.

Vorthos Design Completion -Week 5 Finalists

And here are this weeks finalists and honorable mentions. As a lover 9of tribal effects, this was a great week to see the server’s submissions, but some of them stuck out more. Here is your finalist for this week!

Bailey? managed to create a card for one of my favorite things, four-colored cards, and combined with my love of the card itself this was just my favorite. The flavor went over my head, but I don’t need that to like this card. I support you little mad man.

Pirates are a woefully underdone creature type in Magic, and I like the decision to try and define their colors. This is a flavorful Lord but ended up looking just a tad too powerful.

If anything, this card is the closest to not being a lord, but I like the ingenuity to try and create an unusual lord effect, so good work!

Vorthos Server Design Competition - Week 5

Welcome to Week 5! After some schedule changes and another five days, we’re ready to show off this weeks submissions! 

The theme for this week was Lords, which is a nickname for any card that gives bonuses to creatures of its type. We had some nice submissions, and I hope you enjoy seeing them!

User: Olivia

Wow, very flavorful and definitely a powerful lord for Aetherborn, and definitely stands out compared to Midnight Entourage. I’d say at the current cost it would more fair to instead give them +1/+1 instead of +2/+0, but otherwise I like this card.

User: Ghostly

Definitely a power card at a proper cost, it was a nice touch on realizing how Spiders tend to be block a lot, and capitalizing on that. This is more of a direct Spider Lord than Ishkanah, and I feel this works more directly in favor of Spider tribal. Nicely done.

User: Orethon

To start, this card basically gives your hydras the abilities of Protean Hulk and I’m not liking it. Plus I feel this card would at least warrant a mythic rarity for effects that almost immortalize your biggest threats. It was a nice attempt, but in the end it isn’t that satisfying.

As noted by the creator, this card acts as a pseudo-lord and I’m actually enjoying it. It’s has a nice effect and its in colors where counters can’t easily be abused, so it’s a great, if niche, lord for humans.

What draws me the most to this card is the final ability, which is the most flavorful of the whole card. Raiding the opponent for gold and silver? This card does that, and I like the self-support it gives for actually getting some combat damage in. Great work.

I like what you were going for, but the idea of one Pheonix bringing back a lot more with it from your graveyard rings an alarm that makes me worry about the power level of this card. Also this is more of a tribal-support card than a classic lord, but I can dig the attempt.

Another note, from what I understand that effect doesn’t actually work due to it being given after the creature returns, so perhaps I’d suggest “At the beginning of your end step, if a Phoenix entered the battlefield this turn, return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield.”

I like the mix of standard Lord abilities and non-standard ones, with convoke becoming relevant on your Insects since the more you cast, the more mana you can produce from your tokens. It’s simple, and I like it.

User: Canon-Police

After I finished crying and was able to judge this properly, I found this to be a nice lord for Hounds. My one problem is the mana cost, and I think granting at least one potentially lethal damage direction to a creature you control deserves at least a five converted mana cost.

User: Ionbound

This card has power level issues. On its own, this thing can deal two damage to target creature on entering or transforming, for three mana. In a tribal werewolves? This gets ridiculous, plus paying RG to use the effect again is just unfair. At a higher cost maybe this works, but otherwise it’s a highly unfair lord.

User: Bailey? (The question mark is part of their name :P)

I seem to be missing out on flavor here, but otherwise it’s a cool card. Four colored cards at least deserve a mythic rarity, and its abilities definitely push that rarity further. Otherwise it’s in all the right colors for warriors, so this checks out. Neat.

Vorthos Server Design Competition Week 4 - Finalists

Here is this week’s finalist and two honorable mentions! There were some nice submissions this week, but in the end it all had to be these three, so here they are!

Congratulations to @elspethsunschampion for her submission! This card was my favorite for the somewhat chilling effect it had on me, plus I love the idea behind it. Well done!

Honorable Mentions:

Luna’s card had plenty of flavor, but I felt the second ability wasn’t exactly matching the inspiration, and that the name could have been better chosen.

@bachelor-biomancer submission was interesting, and I enjoy the teammate-centered idea it goes for. But beyond that it didn’t stand out to me, and was a solid okay. A reminder for the bottom effect that it would b “one less to cast for that player.”

Vorthos Server Design Competition - Week 4

Here we are with week four’s results. I unfortunately didn’t make the set deadline for this so I had to reschedule to releasing the submissions today. This week’s theme, “Design an uncommon.” A bit bland, but given Aether Revolt, we’ve seen how powerful uncommon can get. Let’s begin!

Planeswalker-Kun

I really like this. It’s a nice uncommon with a niche effect, and might be a cool piece of a strategy. Anything that draws cards would love this. Not much else to say.

Luna

Firstly, I love the flavor-joke here with the name and effects. Second, this seems quite useful, and I imagine the art for this card would involve a giant chucking a heap of earth at someone. Nicely done.

This is a nicely costed card that has its own uses outside of team-based formats. The choice of cost reduction is actually my favorite part, and it makes the card adaptable to a variety strategies.

I really like this card for the flavor of someone returning from death, and it’s effect is priced as it would be on cards such as Rise from the Grave. Moving the effect to your next upkeep prevents this from becoming a combat trick and I love it for that.

A relatively simple card with an effect that while easy to understand, has its complications on giving it to spells. These types effects, however, have a precedent for being printed in the mythic category, and would likely not be printed at this rarity.

For an uncommon this is a strictly worse Searing Spear, Lightning Strike, a lot of damage spells really and the uncommon rating doesn’t make up for it.

Vorthos Server Week 3- Finalists!

Here are the finalists for this weeks theme! A new Race type: (Forgive me for not adding that info to the submission post). Onward!

Once again, Canon-Police has won the competition with a very impressive Golgai-colored design. I love the feelings the Osen evoke, and even without the blurb the flavor for these guys is fulfilling. Congrats to another win!

Honorable Mentions:

The Shadows were a nice collection of not-spirits that I found quite the enjoyable tricksters. Their overall evasion and 0-power theme also greatly show their inability to affect the world, and this was nice to see.

@jennserr did a nice job at creating (from her messages, a mole-like species), and is a cool and flavorful design. I do enjoy the morbid humor with the implication of the bird tokens, and overall this card was a nice find.

A very nice and simple example of a design! The burrow is definitely flavorful for this species, and the built in evasion is quite nice and fitting for a black card.

After the Pacific Rim flashbacks stopped I looked at this and didn’t find it all too interesting. There’s not much here besides cost reductions and a menace ability, and doesn’t really evoke a feeling of giant monster.

The osen have no shared origin. They have no greater community or storied history. Like the treefolk and elementals of other planes, they are born of the land itself, gifted sapience and motion. Unlike the other races, they are not given a purpose. An osen is a solitary creature. It has no family, no pack, no civilization. It may interact with other races, but the osen are mute, and they rarely settle long. They are driven by a singular, over-arching goal - a search. They do not fully understand this search, nor can human scholars place it, but they feel its call within, an instinctual urge to discover, to find something they cannot place.

The Osen are humanoid with grey skin and black hair, bearing either one or two pairs of arms and pallid, bone-like 'faces' in semblance of masks. All they bear in common with others of their kind, beyond these physical traits is the Search. And the one thing they truly worship, show joy for, is when something is found. They reclaim the past and navigate the present, and what trinkets and wisdom they obtain they cherish more dearly than anything, and will defend it violently.

Such is the fate of the osen, that though they may find many wonders in their life, their Search never truly ends.They are always seeking, throughout their long lives. Perhaps most tragically, what they discover is almost never shared. The Osen cannot communicate with one another, and guard their findings so jealously that they never pass them on. Their wisdom is forgotten, and must be re-learned. Perhaps this is the true meaning of the Search. One day, the Osen may free themselves from their cycle of loss and reclamation. Until such time, they can only wander, and seek.

Very nice detail! Outside of the blurb your cards very much express the idea behind the Osen, and overall are very interesting in themselves.

Shadows are odd, malevolent beings made of darkness. However, because they lack any physical properties, Shadows rarely interact with the physical world and tend to be tricksters that torment people in small ways such as being the creature just out of sight in one's vision or luring a naive child away from safety. Criminals commonly use Shadows to hide themselves in complete darkness and Shadows are happy to help those that can cause the misdeeds that they can't cause themselves. Stories of more powerful Shadows circulate though. Shadows that can interact with the physical world. Shadows that can choke the life out of you. Shadows that can completely steal the movements of a person, controlling them without raising the suspicion of others. But of course those are just stories…

A very nice race that ironically doesn’t have the mechanic in it’s name, which is for the better considering each has a unique ability. This could have been renamed to something more unique, but I do love the race as it is and their flavorful effects! Nice work!

Attached Blurb:

Composed entirely of shadows and negative energy, the Zerathith are bound to the reality between physical and astral. Malevolent and ruthless, they exist in both realms simultaneously. They are dependent on the negative energy of others to survive, some zerathith feast on it directly, empowering thier victims to sense of mindless fearlessness that makes them lose all sense of control. Some consume the positive emotion, draining a living thing of all will to continue, the negative energy this then creates is a five star banquet to a Zerathith.

At this point it occurred to me there were a lot of black cards to come and seeing similar effects was to be expected. Besides a common theme of -X/-X and Shadow these don’t seem to have much else going for them, and I would have loved to see some more variation in the creature’s effects.

To be fair, I’m in the field of Banshees being fine in the Black spirit category, but otherwise it’s a nice prescribed effect for the group.

Incarnations exist for a reason. These are interesting, but their cousins have been around for longer and fill this niche better, and the prescribed effects would fit better for the Theros gods or their related cards.

Okay! 

The main concept of the Vurstel plane is the future self, becoming the improved or even perfect potential you. The Envision mechanic emphasizes this in being able to ‘see’ your future self and become them. 

This becomes central to the societies of Vurstel, constant improvement for the better in various ways, and flavor wise the best aspects of each color would be emphasized, as to show how everyone is working towards the better.

Naturally the story arc of this plane would find conflict in those who choose to improve for their own gain, or the corruption of the ideals of Vurstel. Rather than one creature becoming their own better self, a mechanic like Transfigure could represent the exploitative nature of using others for personal gain.

Vorthos Design Competition - Week 2 Finalists

Thank you for your submissions this week! These were great designs and it was tough deciding, but here is your winner and the honorable mentions.

Congratulations to Discord user Luna!

This was by far my favorite design. The ability to animate any of your equipment and make it a creature itself rather than equipping it to something else makes a very nice twist on a standard Equipment deck. This could use some restrictions on making creatures, but otherwise it’s a very nice design!

Honorable Mentions

@elspethsunschampion despite the misflavor of her abilities, I love the build around potential as creature focused Selesnya decks are a common thing. Also I love the flavor (this is a Vorthos server afterall :P), and it plays wonderfully into her given abilities.

Planeswalker-Kun effectively created a ticking time bomb planted on the bottom of your car being driven at 100 miles per hour (160.934 kilometers per hour) in the direction of your opponent at the top of the Grand Canyon.

Where was I going with this?

It either whiffs spectacularly or ends up as a nuke. Nicely done.

Vorthos Design Competition Week 2-Buildable Rares

Welcome to week 2! This weeks prompt was to create a rare card that you could build a strategy around, and the server did no disappoint! Finalists will be posted separately.

These two cards seem to not have much in common with each other besides the reliance on creature cards in the graveyard. Sorcha’s ability also doesn’t fit in Selesnya colors, as sacrifice effects in white are more in the mono-white/Boros territory.

Khold

This would have been more potential in a silver border with text as vague as this, and raises the question of whether the number 1 and one are treated the same way.

Triske

In a nutshell this makes devotion, a normally simple mechanic that was touted as a simpler Chroma and makes it more complicated. On top of that, the hybrid colors imply this could be used in Gruul colors, which mechanically it wouldn’t fit in. Swapping the green mana for blue in the hybrid cost would have made this much better color-pie wise. Plus as a build around this brings nothing to the board on impact.

Ghostly

I like this as it fits into an interesting Voltron-esque strategy but at the same time this provides a massive sacrifice outlet for free every turn. With the cost reduction this could be compared to Eye of Ugin, and with the right deck this could get ridiculous.

This is definitely creative, but it suffers from not being green, but fetchlands are a thing so it could work out in a Grixis archetype. In terms of building around it there’s not a lot one can do with a Tutor-centric archetype. Props for flavortext though.

Luna

This is quite the creative enchantment, and works well as a selective March of Machines with a creative twist. To my knowledge the replacement text has no qualms rule wise.

Orethon

For a card that lets you get free spells it’s not very interesting, although the selective targeting for the exile clause is creative. Although targeting on anyone but yourself has the chance of giving them a free draw.

Jennserr

I’m reminded of Waste Not in terms of three effects but acts instead as a recycle for your entire deck. There’s really not much to get out of this card, but then again I have no clue what kind of deck would want this.

Planeswanker-kun

The Thorn acts as a High risk/variable reward card that acts basically acts as a potential time bomb for everything you stock your deck full of. In a standard game you’d hope to play this on turn three, get both your land drops, then lose ten life and play ⅙ of your total deck for free and pray to Nethraxes. It might reward you with a giant board of Eldrazi or blow up in your face. Otherwise this card just kills your deck.

Thank you all for your submissions and interest. I’ve looked over all of your cards one more time, and I’ve reached my conclusions.

Congratulations to user Planeswalker-kun for their winning design! I felt their mechanic reflected the counters theme well, and I enjoy the simplicity of the design of the overall card!

Honorable mentions:

Bachelor-Biomancer had an interesting idea going, but the effects of the Emmissary itself only add more confusion to the game and boardstate.

dude1818′s design was simple, effective, and overall an average design that didn’t stand out in the end, but enjoyable nevertheless!

Vorthos Server Design Competition-Week 1

Here are the results of Vorthos Server Design Competiton!

For those of you who are not a member of the Discord server, I held a design competition recently, with members sending designs based on a theme. The server belongs to @sketchydoodles and can be joined here: https://discord.gg/dWfFrEA

Now, for the results!

Orethon

Sedition is an interesting mechanic, but it’s far too complicated for a magic card these days. Counters, memory work, and variable costs don’t help the mechanic much, and on top of it all this card requires a deck archetype to make this effect worth using, otherwise it’s a conditional Pacifism with card draw attached, which you’re not guaranteed to even receive the benefit of.

This card fits nicely into the Golgari archetype of utilizing your own graveyard for benefits, and fits nicely into an uncommon slot. The timing restraints of the ability seem a bit wonky, and probably would be better under the standard “Only when you could cast a sorcery spell.”

This card boils down to keywording a clause common on anything in magic with “Clockwork” in its name, with a minor change of requiring the card is tapped rather than it attacking or blocking. Tt’s a nice idea however, and does have precedent from mechanics such as fight. As for utilizing the mechanic, Stun Scorpion has a simple but effective trigger reminiscent of Clockwork Hydra, but it’s interesting to see the clause causing the damage and the one removing counters separated.

A nicely costed body with a buff effect, the problem is the mechanic is essentially useless, as I find there to be little reason to purposely suspend one of your own cards.

The reveler definitely covers the flavor of the Rakdos guild in its ability, which is creative but strikes me as a temporary unleash. Also it lacks an activation cost, which makes me feel as if this complicates the board state even more when your you can give your creatures a free +1/+1 until end of turn.

User:Weslyphon

Another card in Rakdos colors that deals with -1/-1 counters, but now it’s reminding me of Renown but with -1/-1 counters. It does present an interesting choice of purposely weakening your creature to effectively make it stronger, and playing this turn two would be great for an aggressive strategy. Any deck running proliferate against this card would destroy it though.

This card has a very flavorful mechanic that unfortunately becomes complicated by the creature’s second ability. Tracking things ad infinitum sounds like a recipe for confusing and misplays, and personally I feel this would have been better to tie the effect to the Emissary only while it was on the battlefield.
