“Doesn’t it? She said she didn’t return them, I set myself to falling out of love with her, and I found it much easier than I thought it would be.” He shook his head, frowning lightly. It made him feel disloyal, somehow, even though he had no real cause to be loyal to someone who didn’t want to be with him and showed very little interest in even being his friend now. His own inconstancy bothered him though.
He chuckled a little as he pulled one of the shots toward him, nodding slightly to show his assent. There were few things Cor had that he wouldn’t willingly share or give away outright if someone asked. “I found her. I ensured she was safe. I think I’ve fulfilled my obligations as far as honor goes.” He picked up another of the glasses and tipped it back, setting it back on the bar with a little laugh. “Exactly the problem. I did everything I said I would, and perhaps more. Yet here I am, thinking I ought to go on feeling poorly about it out of some mangled sense of loyalty.”
.
“Then it likely wasn’t love,” he pointed out, “A deep infatuation, intense, filled with hope for a future of more, but love? True love? That takes time and deep connection and is not so easily gotten rid of.” He shook his head gently at his friend and reached over to curl a hand gently around his shoulder. “There’s more in the world.”
Time spent with Cornelius was always easy, even fun, and for a man like Inigo, fun had long been hard to come by. “You have, and anyone who had a sense of honor would tell you so,” he agreed, his eyes lingering on him as he drained another shot. Reaching over, he picked up another glass and tipped it back as well, setting it down more in front of Cor and turning to look at him seriously. “There are people far more deserving of that loyalty of yours than a woman who’s already run off to live a life without you in it. Surely there are people in your life that have stuck by you? At least one other you find attractive at the very least?” He chuckled at that last question, knowing it was a crapshoot with this man’s honor and how willing he would have been to even acknowledge such a thing.
