The mermaid wasn't meant for rules. There was not a single rule that her father had made that Ariel hadn't broken. It was always the biggest rule that she broke the most often: don't interact with humans.

She hid, halfheartedly so, on the ship's edging. The mermaid watched in amazement as she watched the captain and his crew go about their day, none the wiser that she was spying on them, dreaming of what it could be like to be known by the pirates.

She loved all that took to the sea -- but she held a special regard for pirates.

But then came the ticking.

Ariel's gaze was pulled from the humans. Her tail fins flicked as she glanced downward. The sight of the biggest crocodile that hunted these waters looked up at her, readying to lunge upward to collect his meal.

There was only one place to go to remove herself from striking distance. With the strength of arms and powerful tail, the mermaid hauled herself on board just as the crocodile propelled itself from the water, it's gaping maw snapping up and just missing her as her slender frame flopped aboard the ship.

Human was stretching things a bit when it came to Hook. True, he may have started out that way, but humans didn't live for centuries at the helm of a ship that could sail in and out of impossible places. He'd always been able to find Neverland when he wanted to, and since time didn't pass there, the pirate captain hadn't aged more than a couple decades in all that time.

But her father was right that the surface was far from safe, and a pirate ship the last place she'd want to find herself. Hook had a love/hate relationship with mermaids. Some of them were lovely, and some of them liked to drown his more foolish crew members for sport. Then again, if they were stupid enough to be taken in by a pretty voice, they deserved what they got.

Hook had a sixth sense for when that bloody crocodile was about. It was almost as though he could sense the ticking even before it started. He heard it before anyone else, flesh hand already reaching for the harpoon, and he fired it off just as its jaws came snapping over the side. The spear missed by centimeters, and the croc disappeared back into the waves with a splash, leaving an unexpected visitor in its wake.

"Blasted water cockroach," he snarled. "Almost got a piece of you too, love." He surveyed her with faint amusement, irritation fading into curiosity. He could only assume it had been chasing her, though why he couldn't imagine. There were far easier prey in these oceans than a mermaid. It didn't occur to him that she might have been there first.

Suddenly struck with a need to explain to you how boat pronouns work (I work in the marine industry).

When you're talking about the design of the boat, you say "it".

When the boat is still being built, your say "it".

When the boat is nearing completion, you can say "it" or "she".

When the boat is floating in the water you probably say "she", unless there is still a lot of work to be done (e.g. no engine yet) then you say "it".

When the boat is officially launched and operating, you say "she". If you continue to say "it" at this point you are not incorrect but suspiciously untraditional. You are not playing the game.

If you are referring to a boat you don't really know anything about you may say "it" ("there's a big boat, it's coming this way"). But if you know its name, it's probably "she" ("there's the Waverley, she's on her way to Greenock").

If you are talking about boats in general, you say "it" ("when a boat is hit by a wave it heels over")

If you speak about a boat in complimentary terms, it's "she" ("she's a grand boat"). If you are being disparaging it may be it, but not necessarily ("it's as ugly as sin", "she's a grotty old tub").

If she has a boy's name, she's still she. "Boy James", "King Edward", "Sir David Attenborough"? The pronoun is she.

If it's a dumb barge (no engine), you say it. But if it's a rowing boat (no engine), you say she.

I hope this has cleared things up so that you may not be in danger of misgendering floating objects.

The Jolly Roger was in fine form on the weekends, its usual brand of contained chaos reaching boiling points. Two fights had already broken out, one of which Hook had to wade in and put an end to himself. Drinking and violence went hand in hand for him, always had, and he wouldn’t have cared except he didn’t want Fableton’s police force (if you could call it that) interfering in his business. He polished the end of his hook on his shirt as he returned to his place behind the bar, looking no worse for wear as a couple of unruly patrons were shown the exit. He nodded to the next person at the bar waiting on a drink. He’d hired Hercules’s replacement, but they still weren’t fast enough for nights like this. “What d'ya want?”

Just getting inside the building had proven more challenging than Lyra had anticipated. First, the bouncer refused to believe that she was the age printed on her ID - but after closer examination of the card, he’d had no choice but to acknowledge that it was in fact, authentic.

She’d gotten less than one hundred feet inside when the most recent fight broke out. Lyra slid into a nearby booth with a group of already intoxicated young women - a bachelorette party, so far as she could tell - and they all giggled and ‘whooped’ enthusiastically when the bar’s owner intervened to break up the ruckus.

One of them loosed a low whistle from between rounded lips, before grinning in that way only a woman under the influence of tequila would. She bumps her shoulder against Lyra’s as she leans in close enough that her lips brush the younger woman’s ear, to whisper conspiratorially, “I hear he’s quite the lover. Back when he still sailed, women would flock to port whenever they saw The Jolly Roger on the horizon.”

Heat rises in the mermaid’s cheeks. She politely excuses herself from the booth, quickly and quietly scurrying up to the bar where aforementioned captain resides. It’s difficult to meet his eyes with the other woman’s teasing words still ringing in her ears, however…So Lyra keeps her attention riveted to the bar top instead.

“Um, whatever you recommend. And - and a water, please. I was hoping I could speak with you, actually, Mr. - er - Captain Hook, sir.”

It was true Hook had never had trouble finding a partner, before or after he became stuck in this accursed world. He had a certain brand of rugged roguishness that captured attention. Keeping one, however, was rather more of a challenge. He shouted or growled nearly everything he said, spent half his waking hours thoroughly intoxicated, and every few months had a tendency to walk into the sea and nearly drown himself trying to leave town (also, typically, quite drunk at the time). But even pirates had a code, and he was loyal to his people, even if they were the ones who got the brunt end of most of his temper. Bars, it turned out, were a lot like ships and needed to be kept in line just the same or they went under.

He eyed her with amusement as she approached, polishing the sharp, silver hook with a kitchen towel, though it hardly needed it. It gleamed in the low lights of the bar, coming to a sinister looking point. He’d spent enough time in Neverland and on the waves to know a landlocked mermaid when he saw one. He couldn’t have said what it was, specifically, half a dozen little clues jumping out at him, but it was unmistakable. The shine on her hair, her gait and the way she held herself, a sort of ethereal gleam that lingered on her skin like salt spray even this far onto land, and most obviously that voice, like music even when she was only speaking.

"Well, there's a mermaid if I've ever seen one. Talk fast, love. I'm a little busy." He set the towel aside and reached for a glass, swiftly putting together a martini for her with Mermaid Salt Vodka. Yes, he did think he was funny.
