Use of Liquid Heat exchanger in Electronics Devices
Heat exchangers are a device used to transfer heat from hot medium to the cold medium. These mediums can be liquid to liquid or liquid to air. It is not necessary that both the liquid should be in contact with each other, a solid wall is used to separate them. There are many components in electronic devices that generate a lot of heat. It is necessary to maintain the temperature of the instruments, so they can work continuously, without any breakdown. So, excess heat generated by the components must be moved out of the instrument. Heat Exchangers are used to solving this problem.
The internet of things (IoT) is gaining popularity and the need for integrating computing devices into applications has increased. As a result power consumption is increased in such devices. Since liquid cooling systems are compact and can easily fit into applications, their use as a heat exchanger is increased. The heat transfer rate of liquid is much higher than that of air. So liquid cooling systems prove efficient compared to air cooling systems.
Design of Heat Exchanger
The design of the heat exchanger depends upon the application. Some heat exchangers use pipes while some heat exchangers use plates. To increase the heat transfer rate fins are attached to the pipes. In plate heat exchangers, plates are attached to the pipe. Liquid or water moves through the pipe and absorbs the heat from the pipe. Oil, coolants, or other fluids are widely used in the liquid heat exchanger.
Liquid Cold Plates
Liquid cold plates are considered an efficient option for cooling electronics devices. Liquid cold plates transfer heat from the hot surfaces of the electronics components to the liquid. This liquid further flows into a heat exchanger and moves heat into the surrounding air or into another liquid. Liquid cold plates are compact in design and can easily fit into electronic devices. They are cost-effective solutions also. This is the reason why liquid cold plates are used widely in electronics devices. If you want to transfer high heat load from the electronics devices, customized liquid cold plates can be helpful. Dimension, cost, and performance are the important factors taken into consideration for designing liquid cold plates.
Liquid Cooling Loops
Liquid cooling loops are a combination of a tube and a liquid cold plate. A liquid cold plate is attached to the tube and the tube is supplied with the liquid. With the help of a pump, this liquid is circulated in the attached pipe. Circulating liquid is cooled either with ambient air and again cooled liquid is circulated to the heat-generating component to absorb the heat.
Liquids used in the cooling systems
Once you have decided that liquid cooling systems are the best for your application, the next step is to decide which liquid should be used in the liquid cooling system. There are many types of liquid used in the cooling systems which include water, deionized water, dielectric fluid, and ethylene glycol.
There are many factors that decide which liquid should be used. These include the compatibility of the liquid with the surface of the cooling device. The liquid must be compatible with the material used in the cooling plate or the pipes. Other important factors are the freezing point, heat transfer rate, corrosiveness, and toxicity of the liquid.
