pearl and mother-of-pearl
The first time I cut down a tree with an axe I cried and cried and cried, it brought me to my knees. Every time I swung the axe into the flesh of the tree it sent a shockwave of pain through my hands and body, as though the bark and the skin and the cells of that tree were an extension of my own. As I sat on the forest floor crying, my teacher came over and asked what was wrong and I couldn’t find the words, all I could mutter was: “it hurts so much. I don’t know. It just hurts” He stayed with me for a while, just sitting, until I stopped crying, and he finished cutting down the rest of the tree. I realized then how easy it for so many to be disconnected from the very sensitive reality that the earth is, in fact, the actual extension of our life and blood when machines and dynamite are used to destroy it from a distance.
How much violence occurs from the lack of sensitivity when we choose to stay at a distance? From the earth? From each other? From feeling this great rupture?
