I think the coolest aspect of old barbie movies were the feminist, barbie-fied adaptations of classic ballets and novels. It was such a clever way to ensure timeless stories for Barbie and also introduce young viewers to these masterpieces in a digestible way. I wish with all my heart that they would have done more of that. The second they got off that track, the quality started decreasing immensely. But imagine if they would have continued with it. Firstly, they should have completed the Tchaikovsky trio and done a Barbie Sleeping Beauty (which I think was actually considered but they worried about Disney suing. Bullshit though because Tchaikovsky is public domain. They could have at least tried!) And just think of the wealth of possibilities! Barbie in Much Ado About Nothing. Barbie as the Countess of Monte Cristo. Barbie in Pride and Prejudice (they seriously should have done at least one classic novel adaptation with a female author! Dickens, Twain, and Dumas all got their turn. What about Ms. Austen?!) Barbie in A Midsummer Night's Dream!!! Barbie in a Picture of Doriane Gray. We could have had it all...
