Hey there :) I am really interested to enter SCAD for animation but am wondering why is it that an art college does not require its applicants to present a portfolio for admission (other than for scholarship consideration)? Does this mean that anyone with any level of artistic competency can enter the school? Doesn't this compromise the quality of students? Thank you!
Hi there,That is a great point and a good question to put an SCAD Admission Rep. on the spot for. When I first attended I had just left Ai, and that college is full of artistic incompetency… among other things. It was a real drag. Quality of peers was a concern of mine when I left, and let me tell you, you shouldn’t have to worry about that at SCAD, especially in Animation.When I first attended, some degree’s did require portfolio or “try-outs.” I’m pretty sure performing arts and equestrian were two, maybe concept art as well? Though, don’t hold me to that. Portfolio might depend on department because graduation and entry requirements are vastly different for each. With that said, I know a portfolio submission tremendously helps your admission into SCAD. Say you had low grades and didn’t submit a portfolio, the student with a high GPA or SAT/ACT test scores/no portfolio would have a better chance at entry than you. Or say you had an amazing portfolio/crap grades, you now probably hold a greater chance at entry than the student with a high GPA but no talent. Secondly, those that are lackluster in talent/don’t know what to do with their life, but somehow still make it past admission (because they’ve got the $$$) usually (if not always) get weeded out the first few quarters at SCAD. They exist in few. Let them hit core classes and that’s when sh*t gets real. Especially in the digital media building. SCAD is hard work and only those who are passionate will succeed. I’ve never met an incompetent animator at SCAD, but I also transferred in as a late, late Sophomore. :) Animation was in the same building that I was in, and I can vouch we all put in a lot of hard work and time. Hi Erika!Congrats on joining the SCAD fam! :)If you’re new to SCAD, it’s super easy, you have plenty of time to switch and no, it won’t be hard. Just means a select change of classes or nothing but a change of Degree title. You’d need to talk to whoever does your schedule each quarter/ program advisor. I didn’t even know MA’s existed at SCAD to be honest, but MFA’s do look better on a degree… definitely talk to your program advisor so you have a better understanding of what each requires, and if it’s worth your education investment.[Since you’re new-ish, I do recommend taking Gen-ed classes at a local community college (or online) and transfer them if you want to save yourself some money.. In addition to that thought, I’ve also had better experience in quality of education taking Gen-Eds elsewhere. ESPECIALLY art history. All the art history professors I’ve met at SCAD are god awful, self-indulged people.]Going back to your question, I’ve never heard of someone getting a FULL scholarship for switching from MA to MFA….. or even an increase in scholarship, but your professor might know something I don’t. I’d ask the people who deal with financial aid directly or admissions rep. just to get a 2nd opinion. Though I will say, the only people I’ve ever known to get full rides are foreign students or you need to be of African American descent. It’s sad but diversity is a self-marketing/self-investment for any college, and SCAD is super into that money game.Ultimately, you have a better understanding of your professor to trust her word though on helping you… and an MFA will not hinder you by any means. I'm super happy that I've found your blog! I'm a Seniot in high school and I want to go to SCAD but I'm having thr hardest time writing my statement of purpose.
Hey there, do not sweat it. I remember being super nervous and wanting to put my best foot forward too when applying to the school of my dreams… It’s been so long since I had to write a statement of purpose though. I honestly think they just brief it to make sure you can read and write legibly and have a solid interest in the school. They’ll care more about your incoming grades and portfolio. Just write your honest intention out and how you SCAD will help you achieve your dreams. Put a list of Pro’s together (for example, the schools resources are of plenty and the networking you’ll experience at the school is vast… the teachers are knowledgeable and the school is reputable.) Write out how all these things will help benefit you. I recommend keeping it short and sweet. :) From where I stood, and am standing, there are so many reasons why one would want to have the SCAD experience. SCAD is my dream school (sequential art major and equestrian team hopeful), but I'm really worried about tuition and student debt. As a high school senior hoping to start in the fall of 2017, are there any tips or advice you could give me?
Hi! I hope you didn’t send this forever ago. It seems my Tumblr went on a hiatus and stopped notifying me of messages. SCAD is a great school. :) Not trying to crush your dreams, but my advice to you specifically if you’re worried about student debt is not to go to SCAD for equestrian. Sequential art - yes. If I am to be brutally honest, equestrian is often poked fun at SCAD because it’s typically rich students whose parents can afford to put them through school and they never have to work a day in their life. SCAD is a very expensive school and if reserving stable space, transportation to the equestrian area (out of Savannah) isn’t a problem for you money-wise, then I wouldn’t concern over it. Keep in mind, equestrian will probably not do a whole lot-job wise for you after school. HOWEVER, if SCAD for some reason gives you a free ride or crazy good scholarship for being on the team, then by all means I’d say. Go for it.Sequential art - yes, super cool to attend SCAD for. Great if you network between majors (concept art) for film, animation, game, and VSFX. I don’t know much on the classes itself other than when I worked in the art store in town, sequential was also one of the more pricey degrees when it came to getting art supplies.Tip: Research your first level classes on ratemyprofessors.com and see which professors make you buy a ton of crap you’ll never use again vs. others who are more reasonable. There is a REALLY cool used art store in town (Starlandia) that you should check out. Also a ton of students throw out their supplies when going home for break (lots of foreign students with insane money), everyone who stays goes “dumpster diving” They throw out new bikes. New art supplies. New furniture... it’s ridiculous. Also join all the SCAD (closed facebook group) Free & for Sale pages & off campus housing.... they’re GREAT for finding student living off campus. You’ll need to have a registered SCAD email and all that to join the network though. I really wish I would have known about all this sooner rather than later when I attended.I recommend applying for all the SCAD scholarships now. (check out my post from some time ago regarding scholarships). You can apply for them & see your reward before ever signing your life away to the school. Also do some research on potential jobs you’d like after college and what it might take school-wise to get you there. And research the average salary and then do the math and see what it might take to pay back student debt.I hope all this helps in your research! Best of luck to you.

Hi! I don’t know how much of my blogs you’ve read but I’ve actually graduated this past year.. I majored in VSFX. :) I’m still keeping the blog open for any questions. And also sorry if this is a super late response! My Tumblr never notified me of these last few messages.Game design at SCAD is great from the Game Majors/friends I’ve worked alongside. I know they focus on group projects and team effort which is good. I worked directly with a few of the class members and they shared the same floors VSFX classes. They get to do some cool stuff like a 24 hour game challenge. They’re getting into VR.. They showcase their games at graduation. One of my friends was also sent by SCAD to represent at E3 in LA this past summer (gamer convention) I have a few friends from VSFX at Blur studios as well. I also had a lot of friends cross majors between VSFX, animation, and gaming because rigging, modeling, animation, motion capture, and coding were common aspects. You’ll be successful if you apply yourself and definitely if you get to know and network with people from other majors in the building! If you start out in Game Design, try out another area in electives (like say, animation). You can always make the Major or Minor switch later (the classes are in the same building). The more disciplines you understand, the better off you are anyway. :) I also recommend taking the student tour around Monty and checking out some of the work showcased on the walls. hi! im from AI of jacksonville, FL. and i really didnt like it. ive only done about 1 quarter there. its just not for me. i want to go into animation for SCAD. i tried for ringling but their animation department was full. i really need to figure out my life. so basically, is SCAD looking for anything in particular for a portfolio? i do lots of oil paintings/surrealism/whatever. if you want you can find me, JENN PAGE on facebook to see the art. but i just want to know what i need in particular. ?
I’m not sure how long ago you sent this message (for some reason Tumblr never notified me!) so, apologizes for the late response.To answer your question, SCAD isn’t too particular on portfolio. My advice would be, when you submit, make sure everything is clean and presentable. Have name and date created on hand. Take good scans or photos in natural lighting of your art. If you have a general idea of design, you’re good. I know it differs from major to major for certain things but animation should be relative to traditional art, of course. Whether or not you plan on doing 3D or 2D, showing a little bit of either if possible would help. Having more of one over the other won’t hurt you. They probably look more at whether or not you have an eye and can draw. Animation can be taught. If you read my bit about scholarships, near everyone gets one, but definitely apply for all of those -they’re worth it. SCAD is great for animation. The animation floor was above mine and everyone I know that applied themselves in school got jobs after graduation. I know Ringling is a great school too.... One of my friends left Ringling and came to SCAD. He made out Ringling to sound like kind of a judgmental school...? I don’t know how much that holds true but SCAD felt more like home and ended up feeling much happier there. I had two other friends go to Ringling and neither pursued art careers after.I hope that helps! ^_^
SCAD on Blast - school mistreats student to protect own image
I have very few negative things to share about SCAD but this goes above and beyond outrage. I’m sharing what happened to my friend and what actions SCAD chose to take in order to retain their image. And guess what? I think they should be put on blast for it. So, without further ado, my friend's story as reposted word for word from Facebook: "Sorry for this long post but wanted to give you guys an update as to what has been happening. BUT I just wanted to say thank you everyone for all of your support and your messages. This is has been a very difficult week for me. But I am much better now. Physically I’m ok, no serious injuries other than both of my lips are busted up and I sustained a bruised right elbow. X-rays came back negative. As to what happened, I was mugged somewhere in Downtown City Market. It was believed that I had been slipped a drug while I was in the bar ‘Social Club’. Still waiting on camera footage for that. I literally don’t remember anything. The only memory I had was walking into the bar and meeting up with some coworkers and then waking up the next morning about 6ish, sitting outside in front of my workplace at The Bar Bar. All my belongings were gone. My book-bag which contained my laptop, phone, wallet, I.D. back-up hard drive, cell phone charger, wrist watch, all gone. They even took my shoes and took off my pants. Glasses too were gone. Who takes fucking glasses? I was completely disoriented and at first didn’t know where I was. I walked around trying to find help when I noticed a cop patrol parked in Ellis Square. I walked up to the officer and told him what happened. To my surprise, he literally says to me, “Sorry man, there is nothing I can do for you. The best thing I can tell you is to walk home.” He completely blew me off and didnt care what I just told him about me being mugged.As I am walking down Broughton street with no shoes, and no pants, and my face bloodied, two employee’s of Panera Bread spot me and take notice that I’m hurt. They call the cops and THEY help me clean my wounds. A new cop finally arrives and does a offical police report. The most disheartening thing about this whole situation is that after the police notified SCAD about one of their students being mugged, SCAD did not even bother to call or email me any kind of support whatsoever. NONE. They had the audacity to e-mail me and say that I have been summoned to a panel disiplinary hearing regarding and I quote: “Having initially reviewed the report, I hereby cite you with the following violations from the Code of Student Conduct: a(ii): Alcohol. Being publicly intoxicated or engaging in other irresponsible acts committed under the influence of alcohol. s: Other Policies. Violating other published SCAD policies or rules, including all Residence Hall policies.To determine if you are responsible for a violation, you have been summoned to appear at a student conduct hearing with me to resolve the incident-” Yes, they didnt even care that I was drugged or mugged. And thats the thing, SCAD doesn’t care about it’s students when it comes to maintaining their own image. They will throw anyone under the bus when it comes to protecting themselves. This was a HUGE SLAP in the face.“ Dear SCAD, is this how you treat your students????? Update: “Again, thank you all for your support. As for that panel hearing regarding my “violations of student conduct” I won. After arguing my side of the story and showing them FACTS of the case, SCAD has decided that I should not be held responsible for what happened to me. (duh).Literally the entire time it was like they were trying to guilt trip me for now being “aware” of my drink. They kept saying, “what would YOU do differently?” Gees I dont know, maybe wrap myself in bubble wrap and never come out my room? Thats someone saying to a sexually assaulted victim, “what were you wearing during your attack?” NO. Thats not how it works! My reasoning to why SCAD was involved was because they didnt want to send out yet another email about one of their students being mugged AGAIN. They don’t want those Scad Days/Admission tours to be affected[…]“ I want to point out that this story doesn’t represent the whole school but whoever is up there in the tippy top making decisions needs to rethink how they treat students in distress. We are paying THOUSANDS of dollars to attend a reputable and well respected college. IF this is a “top notch art school,” SCAD definitely needs to change it’s game plan. What kind of image are you aiming for, really? The school should appropriately and honestly address these issues and take better action to retain image, not sweep them under the rug and punish the victim. Please share this story and help the students be heard.

Art Institutes vs SCAD
An acquaintance emailed me recently asking for SCAD advice/ advice on theater tech background as that was mine in high school. I though that my response might be helpful to others out there as well.
When you apply there, do you have to submit a portfolio, and what would be in that portfolio? You don't have to... or some programs you don't have to, for illustration it might be different. I'd suggest getting contact with a school adviser, someone that would help you transfer credits and tell you all about scholarships etc. They'll really suggest submitting a portfolio for scholarships (and I will highly recommend you do that too). So have something prepared for that. There's an Artistic scholarship and Academic. If you have something to transfer in from another school that will help your chances for an academic scholarship. But honestly if you just try for both, you're likely to get something for both. My old roommate was an accounting major prior to scad and her adviser pushed her to submit something even though she didn't' have any art. So she submitted her business accounting report.. an analysis of numbers she did as a Senior paper... AND she still got an artistic scholarship for it. So it's questionable how they divide the funds out... it'd basically it'd be silly not to TRY for scholarship. My portfolio consisted of 2D art.. it's all digitally uploaded. I think I had played around in after effects, so I had a couple 10 second videos too.

I’m now a graduate! And I recognize this wasn’t the best blog ever. The school really sucks you in once you hit core classes. (no time for silly blogging :-) ) Hands down, best decision I’ve ever made. And I know it’s cheesy but SCAD family is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. Would I do it again? Yes - in a heartbeat.

Hey! Sorry unfortunately I know next to nothing about the SCAD fashion program other than the characteristics of the people in it. I do know that, if I remember right, a scad student's design was worn in the Oscars and that was a big deal. I know it's a more promising career than textiles. Also that with that degree you can pretty much study at any of SCADs campuses and learn something valuable. Unfortunately that isn't equal across all degrees... i.e., VFX in Hong Kong is a joke.
awesome! when i was looking for scad reviews this popped up hmm so do you know anybody that studied graphic design or advertising? what did/are you study? with scholarships how much was the average cost? how were the core classes?
One of my best friends studied graphic design. SCAD is one of the top rated school in the nation for graphic design. She won a SCADDY for her marketing products when she graduated last quarter. Pretty huge achievement. I was studying VFX and graduated last month in May… which is why I’ve been off the radar from this blog. I think I put out my cost with my scholarships included awhile back in an earlier post? Scholarships vary from person to person. If you’re a foreign student you’re more likely to get a full ride I’ve noticed… Or from an ethnic background. SCAD likes diversity. Other than that you have a pretty good chance at getting a scholarship. My roommate was interior design and came to the school with an associates degree in Accounting. Her adviser told her to still submit something for scholarship consideration even though it wasn’t artistic… so she submitted a 10-20 page financial report that was her Senior paper from school… and got an artistic scholarship nearly close to my amount… which is a considerable amount. Which goes to prove you can and will get something if you just try and have something that shows you’re intelligent. It’s also like 20$ for application and then you can submit scholarship applications before you fully commit if you’re just curious to see how much you can get before you fully dive in.Although all core classes are very intensive, some are more time consuming than others… All the digital arts majors, basically anyone in Animation, Game Design, VFX, and Industrial Design are known to have the most time consuming workload of any majors… Your adviser should set you up with 1 core class to get you into your major’s experience (graphic design?) right away so you know where you want to specialize in later on in your Junior and Senior year…The one thing that struck me most positive about this school was how much the teachers get involved and really want you to graduate with a job. They really care and it’s a very supportive environment. They will go out of their way. I can’t speak for all majors necessarily but this is from my 3 years of experience here at SCAD. Once during finals, a professor came to the school at 4am for those of us who were still awake pulling all-nighters, pulled out a waffle maker and cups…. and made us waffles and juice right there in the classroom. One of my best SCAD memories.

Hello long lost world of tumblr. It's my third quarter now and I completely have failed at keeping you updated. Please don't hate me. It's the third quarter and I'm now in my core classes (yay transfer credits). Anyways things are getting pretty real for me so I can't continue promising that I'll be updating regularly - but I shall try.
I have a lot of work to do tonight and this is my first night home in a long time... so I'm going to give you the briefest of updates. Okay so here goes.... These past few months have been such a trip. I've had some of the best experiences of my life the past few weeks. All my classes are in Montgomery (Monty) Hall. I pretty much live there now. The building is open 24/7 for those of you who don't know.
I love my classmates. I'm inspired by the talent that surrounds me and I finally feel at home and at my level. SCADs frustrating when it comes to class scheduling. I'm finding myself in trouble with registering because I'm at the point in my degree where I can't take higher level classes without first taking a lower level class....and this specific lower level class isn't available when I need it to be... or it's full... So right now I'm taking my first programming class and also cinematography for VFX... and a motion media class.. Programming-hard. This might actually be my first class in college that has been this challenging. I've never scripted in my life. It's been quite disheartening... So being a VFX major... I'm really enjoying my elective with Motion Media... and uh we'll see if I can make it over this bump. Oh yeah it's finally warm again... annnnd the beach is still amazing. Still living in the same apartment... Same roommate. And uhhhh that's it. I'm going to spam you with more photos to make up for things. :) If I don't update in a while, just know that SCAD is probably one of the best decisions of my life. Whenever I'm feeling down I remind myself how grateful I am to be where I'm at today.

My life right consists of tedious homework I already know how to do. Stupid transfer credits....I am so over gradient meshes.
I hope you guys all had a Merry Christmas. Things settled down a bit for me now that I'm back home in Iowa. I'll be returning to Savannah the 1st of Jan and classes start back up the 7th and I cannot tell you how much everyone including myself is so stoked to go back. :) I'll be taking 20th century art, retaking color theory (credit transfer issues), and still working to get into advanced computer applications. It's the one class I really really need as a requirement to my core classes. Only 80 more credit hours of 180 to go!!! Anyway, here are some pictures of Savannah from a couple of weeks ago. It was about 78 degrees for a few days in a row in early December. Crazyness. And the beach is so beautiful an surreal this time of year. Right now it's probably still high 60's in Savannah. Anyway, the weather is fantastic and I'd take it over midwest cold any day. :)
