… that’s what sickness is, a flight of black birds. A ritual. It’s the body making no sense, it’s godblood.

Pierre Schaeffer, “Etude aux chemins de fer,” L'Œuvre musicale
This first piece of musique concrète released in 1948 by the “father” of the genre in the very act of creation is, on the one hand, more literal than his later tape deconstructions of dramas and whatever sound sources he chose to collage, run backwards, stack or warp, but it was, reportedly, so unlike anything on the scene, that many thought it either a piss-take or the work of a charlatan.
On this compilation, there are cuts that sound like The Books. Or should I say, I could see whence The Books might’ve taken inspiration. There are pieces that sound like ‘90s sampladelic intros. And he’s doing it in the late ’40s and early ‘50s, paving the way for Stockhausen and the others. A visionary of the audio form.
