Riku withdrew her hand, backed off. “That’s kinda what help is for,” she sighed. “How do you think you’re supposed to make it stop without help?”

She slipped into the office, flipped the master switch, and all the colorful lights from the screens and signs lit up. She took the key to the token vendor from a drawer and got them a good pile of tokens out. Cuz yknow. Tokens are overpriced anyway. Depositing the large handfuls of pretty much worthless shiny coins in her pocket, she made for a machine that declared in big neon green letters “SLIME INVADERS 4.” It was honestly lame and cheesy as hell. But shooting the tacky green slime monsters was a pretty satisfying way to kill a little time. She deposited 4 tokens in both player slots and took up the player 1 gun. “So the sensor is a little screwy. Follow the little targeting cursor even if it doesn’t really make sense with how you’re aiming.”

The masked boy looked over his surroundings with a frown. …what was this place? …then again in most of the worlds he invaded, he never took the time to actually look over every nook and cranny just general areas via his Unversed and sometimes as himself.

He picked up a gun and chuckled. “Reminds me of the Pirate’s gun,” he remarked with a chuckle as he picked it up and attempted to aim it and follow the girl’s hint on how to use it.

"Pirate huh?" she asked curiously, turning the first couple monsters on the screen into exploding goo. "Only pirates I ever met didn't have anything more sophisticated than a single shot pistol." And boy had Hook and his crew been obnoxious.

Riku withdrew her hand, backed off. “That’s kinda what help is for,” she sighed. “How do you think you’re supposed to make it stop without help?”

Yeah this kid was definitely psycho. But she’d give this a shot for now. “Some of em do. There’s lots of different games. Shooters, skee ball, racing games, those dance games where ya gotta step on the arrows.” She stood and brushed herself off. “Place is closed, but I’ve got a feeling you won’t mind that we have to technically break in.” She made a dark corridor to the inside of the place and nodded for him to follow her.

Vanitas was a bit cautious at first to her invitation. He wasn’t supposed to be making any sudden moves. He was supposed to stay put for the time being, but seeing as this person had an affinity with Darkness, it wouldn’t hurt to step away from this dismal place. “…I’ve done worse things,” he scoffed as he went through the portal into this new place.

Fuck… maybe her sympathy had been misplaced. But then, he had said fighting was all he knew, and she recognized the discomfort in how he shifted away from her. Had he never known kindness? Never known anything but a threat?

“Right, well, not gonna help you with that. Not a big fan of the whole suffering or making others suffer thing. How about video games though? We could hit up an arcade.” Video games, Riku? Really? The kid was kinda a psycho it seemed, and no single day of acting like a normal teenager would fix that. But maybe he needed a friend. And honestly, maybe she did too. Pretending to be a normal teen, just for a while, even with someone else who was only pretending… could be good.

“You don’t need to help me with that. I got that front covered all on my own,” he responded. “I can see through their eyes whenever I wish, almost like a front row seat,” he finished with a dark chuckle before he cocked his head in her direction. “…a game? Does it involve fighting or survival?” Vanitas inquired as he slowly got to his feet.

Noticing her sitting close to him, he scooted away.

Riku gasped softly and got to her feet, taking several steps back from the larger creatures. She drew Soul Eater defensively, but made no move to strike. Not yet. She didn’t want to hurt him further if she didn’t have to. That could just cause more distress, more creatures, more problems.  “I didn’t mean to upset you. Is there anything you’d rather be called?” If Ansem had been the one to name her, she’d hate it too.

The masked boy got to his feet slowly, extending his hand forward. Instead of summoning forth his Keyblade he just set them afire with a Dark Firaga until they faded and were reabsorbed the boy before he sat back down again where soft pants could be heard from beneath his mask.

“…my name is my name. It’s fine…” he replied as his head lowered as if he were looking at the ground, but that difficult to distinguish.

She’d heard it before she thought, probably from her master, but she couldn’t recall why.  “Like I said. I can relate. And I just… wish someone had wanted to help me, I guess.” 

“It means emptiness… My master gave me the name since I didn’t have one for myself…” he recalled from that memory years ago. He did have a name. He just wasn’t allowed to take it and keep it. How he hated that day all those years ago…

At this recollection and the feelings that came with it  several creatures formed from him as he grit his teeth and bared it. Another small one, followed by a bigger one with claws, and a large one with a huge belly.

“…you can’t relate to this…but the sentiment? It’s appreciated…” he hissed from beneath the mask.

It was hard to catch that last bit, but she caught the emphasized word “weakness”.  “Is it like a lost control thing? To make them on accident?” Her Darkness had been just as volatile on occasion. Always in times of greatest distress. “Maybe just taking your mind off of it a while would help you get it back in check.” Easier said than done, she knew. “Can I help do that at least? I know I don’t know you. I just…” Just what? Still had enough wannabe hero in her to keep her from walking away? She sighed again. “Sorry. We weren’t actually introduced and here I am prying. I’m Riku.”

“…something like that,” the masked boy replied as he sat up a bit, looking to her as his head cocked at her. “…why do you want to help me out anyway. Like you said, you don’t know me.” The distrust in his voice easy to pick up on though it wasn’t as if he was trying to hide it either.

At hearing a name, he decided the least he could do was give one back. “Vanitas.”
