A Weekend in the Near Wild
A few days ago I went almost camping for The Inertia.
"In our time, having a pure, uninfluenced experience of nature is exceedingly difficult, if not impossible. It seems to me that we should spend less time trying to convince ourselves that we’re finding new places or stepping through them alone; instead, we should spend more time and energy protecting what remains of the far wild and restoring what remains of the near."

HTO Surf Shop in Victoria has started a series that profiles Pacific Northwest surfboard shapers. The first features Scott Rowley, who's been working for many years under his Northwest Surf Design label and now builds boards at Barracuda as well.

A few photos from a recent skip up Mt. Albert Edward in Strathcona Provincial Park. We did it in three legs: an evening hike from the trailhead at Raven Lodge to the campsite at Lake Helen Mackenzie; a long day from Helen Mackenzie to the summit and back; and then a short morning stroll back to the truck the next day. Other than a balky water filter and some luckless trout fishing, it was a nearly perfect way to spend the last warm weekend of the year. Go high: the coast was in thick and chilly fog, the alpine in clear stillness and sharp hot sun.
It's less the great acts that matter than the many small ones. This is a lovely short film from the Central Westcoast Forest Society about its work to restore the salmon-bearing Atleo River in Clayoquot Sound. More about the CWFS is here.
