Uncertain Fortune *Part 1/2*
*A get well soon present to my RP partner and a piece on Draenis’s backstory.*
There are days where the library is just buzzing with life, and there are days where it’s utterly empty with not a soul in sight. A rare opportunity for whole library staff to unwind, and days where Draenis could retreat into his chambers early to read in complete privacy.
But today, right before he could open a portal back to his chambers, he was stopped in his tracks by Iria, as the head librarian pulled him to the side and stared directly into his eyes. “Minster, remember to return your books on time! You can’t go keeping them all to yourself.“ Just by the sound of Iria’s tone, Drae could tell straight away that she was displeased, and so quickly he replied to her very apologetically."Sorry sorry…I will return them by sundown. I promise.”
Iria stayed still for a moment just staring straight at Drae with her piercing emerald colored eyes, it was as if to see if he would keep his promise or not. “Okay, but if you don’t…there will be a punishment!”
“I understand.” Draenis shuttered out, willing to say anything at this point to get out of trouble, and it worked. As after a few more minutes of Iria reminding him of what else needs to be done by tomorrow, she smiled sweetly and gave him a pat on the back for a job well done. Finally allowing him to go back to his chambers.
Alone at last in his personal space, Drae sighed in joy and began the lengthy mission of locating all the books that he had borrowed… apart from the ones that he owns. Rummaging through his towering bookshelves one by one, before one particular tome caught his attention. An old tome with its once silver cover now fading into a shade of a light grey and its title hardly readable, but Drae manages to recognize it right away. “Well hello, old friend.” Various types of emotions then started to swell up within him like…regrets, longing and an unusual sensation of pure happiness. The sort of happiness that one would experience while in their youth. A period of time when everything seemed attainable.
What started as something he did just for fun, had turned into a habit as months flew by. A peculiar habit of exchanging what little food he got for breakfast with the old fortune teller to get a free reading from her, because in a world where magic was a day to day thing. Fortune telling was more of a reality than just an idea.
"I thought I told you to not visit me when your face is all messed up like that.” Without even a glance up the old fortune teller uttered out with absolute confidence, as a shadow abruptly hovered over her. Covering the parts of her face that her black hood and long white hair couldn’t.
“And do I seem like the type of brat to listen?” Bending now directly in front of the fortune teller and her crystal ball, young Draenis looked down with a radiant smile spread from one ear to another. “Did you see me coming in your crystal ball madam?” He just couldn’t help but be astonished by this sometimes, magic users dwelling so far within the Dalarn sewers was an uncommon occurrence around here. Like why would someone intelligent enough to master the methods of magic stay down here?
“No, It was just a simple guess.” Her face still expressionless, the elderly woman held out her right hand demanding some sort of food placed within it. “So what will it be today brat? You wish to know the positions of the local guards again? Or do you wish to grasp the location of an easy victim to pickpocket from?“ There was no reason to hide the slightly mischievous intention of this daily exchange anymore, both of them had grown dull to the guilt and even found humor in other’s misfortune. “Well…the positions of the local guards will do me some good today. I like to avoid them as much as possible, they don’t quite enjoy my company these days.”
“Stole from a noble again? I warned you already on how unwise it is.” After accepting a loaf of white bread with two slices of bacon, the fortune teller went forth to gaze into her crystal ball petitioning for answers, and Draenis just anticipated for her in silence. Till from out of nowhere, the old woman gasped in shock, locking their eyes for the first time together. "What?! What did you see?!” Of course, startled by this odd turn of events, he stumbled back a bit, and the old woman followed urgently to grasp hold of both of his shoulders.
“You must listen to me carefully! The guards are positioned everywhere around the city today, someone important had set their foot in this place. But still, you must make your way to the cemetery and there you will find a girl dressed in noble attire. You MUST take the silver tome within her hold. Understand?“
Staring back wide-eyed, Draenis took some time to register what had been told to him. “Wait…what? I thought you said not to steal from nobles, and with the guards all around. How in the world do I get away?!” He slowly straightens a bit, careful to mask his fear and unease. “Madam please tell me yo-”
“It’s your fate! YOU MUST GO NOW!”
“Okay! Okay! I’ll go…just calm down won’t you?” Draenis forced himself to be obsequious when all he wanted to do was to push the old lady away and call her crazy. He should have already guessed that this was all a scam. Why did he even hesitate?
But in truth, deep down he knew the reason for his hesitation. Fear kept him obedient like a trained hound, and maybe after spending so many mornings with this old woman. He had started to trust in her advice. “Anything else I need to know?”
The old woman’s mouth crinkled up into a smile of contentment at his words, she must have been so thrilled, because Draenis have not seen her display any type of emotions yet, let alone a smile. “No, you know everything already. It’s all in your head. The wheels of fate are now set in motion, there is no stop to them now.” Reasons and the desire to make sense of what was going on are now entirely out of the window, as Draenis merely nodded and began to make his way to the cemetery.
**Well I don’t know how to end this, and I think I should ask for Alea’s permission before using a log we did together. Will continue in Part 2!**
