Nodding sympathetically, Gibbs replied softly, “I told myself to give up after three ex-wives, but you’re different. Aside from the obvious. I never felt for them the way I did for Shannon. I feel similar with you.”

Chuckling, Gibbs carefully guided them back out on the road and headed toward a pizza place near the base.

Finally, a smile broke over his face and he picked up Tony without even thinking. They spun in a circle before he set the other man down. “I won’t let you down. Not you, Tony,” he leaned down as he spoke then kissed him.

Gibbs playfully rolled his eyes. “Yeah, I bet you two would love that.” He pulled away to restart the car.

“It’s true.” Gibbs smiled softly at Tony.

All Gibbs could do was nod. How had an almost break up end up like this? Who did this anyway? Usually it was fight, make up sex, and back to work the next day. Licking his lip anxiously, Gibbs slowly made eye contact with Tony.

“It happens to the best of us, Tony. Don’t beat yourself up.” He nuzzled his head against Tony’s. “You know something? I promised myself I’d never get married again...” He commented awkwardly. They weren’t married, but Gibbs had been thinking about it more and more.

Gibbs leaned even closer to give Tony a gentle kiss. “I’ll be there every second, forever.”

Gibbs completely understood Tony. Though it didn’t show as obviously, Gibbs felt the same way. Like he didn’t deserve to be happy again after Shannon and Kelly had died. 

“No need to apologize,” for once he didn’t mention it was a sign of weakness before continuing. “I know better than to put myself in danger and I damn sure know I don’t want to do anything to lose you, Tony.”

Moving closer, the older man wrapped his arms around Tony and hugged him almost too tightly. “I love you too. I can’t lose you too.” There it was, that rare vulnerable moment Tony usually only saw in bed at night when he dreamed of his past.

“I’m not pressuring you, am I? I want you to do what’s best for you.” Sliding his hand up, he cupped Tony’s cheek.

“It has been, but maybe some Abby hugs will help you feel better. I know she brightens my day.” Gibbs reached over to lay a gentle hand on his shoulder.

Gibbs just let himself be hit. Internally he knew he deserved that and much more. However, his normally icy eyes stayed soft for Tony. He knew the pain being cheated on inflicted. He had to convince Tony of the truth, that it was only a case. That his ‘thing’ for redheads was in the past. Before he’d been trying to replace Shannon. That didn’t work one bit. He had to teach himself to just find someone who made him feel the same way. The person didn’t have to look or act like Shannon. That’s what he found in Tony.

“It’s part of the job. I can’t stop myself from doing everything I can to make sure people are safe and protected. I don’t want other people to end up like me,” he admitted softly.
