We all want to show our appreciation and support to the mangakas we love, but...
Can we please not comment in English on their social media, particularly those mangakas who do not have works licensed in English?
I just saw 10-12 comments in English on Tsuba Daeki’s latest art post on Twitter. I realise that the commenters did so with no ill intentions but stuff like this makes mangakas wonder why they’re getting this kind of feedback from Western (non-Japanese) audiences. From there it’s not a huge leap to the conclusion that their works are being scanlated in English without their knowledge. Most mangakas are not supportive of scanlation, they consider it disrespectful and finding out that their mangas are somehow being modified and distributed to Western (non-Japanese) countries only makes them hurt and miserable.
If you want to show your support or give feedback on a post, then like it, retweet it, post a gif. Better yet, keep these simple and commonly-used Japanese phrases handy if you really feel like commenting!
ありがとうございます= Thank you very much
可愛 / かわいい = Cute / Adorable
超かわいい / めっちゃかわいいね = This is super cute
きれいな = So pretty / Beautiful
すごいですね = So cool / awesome
見てて幸せです= This makes me happy
好きです / 大好きです = I like it / I love it
お誕生日おめでとう[ございます] = Congratulations on your birthday
やばい = A highly versatile word that can be adapted for use in a variety of situations. One connotation is similar to the English phrase “I’m dying” (not literally, but from feels). Use twice for greater emphasis.
These phrases can be used in combination with onomatopoeic exclamations like きゃぁ!, うわー!, わあー! to express great excitement.
Just don’t comment in English or your native language if that mangaka’s works are not available in your country. And for the love of all powers that be, don’t post screencaps of scanlations on their page or ask when the next update will be.
