to respond to a comment I recently got, and to celebrate the 2 year anniversary since I've created this character (as well as the fact that she has gotten famous enough to be referenced in a tiktok comment), I decided that this would be the best place to post the journey and lifetime of Clover as an oc as well as a bunch of sketches I've never posted before ☝️🤓
This is the first Clover sketch e-v-e-r
I just traced over a Peach render lol, just as a way to figure out how I wanted her design to look, if it could fit in with the other princesses, etc.
I started fleshing out her design, giving her a full gown, testing colors, all that jazz, as well as drawing her in my (at the time) artstyle to help me since I was having a bit of a hard time drawing in the Mario artstyle
after the #iconic drawing that introduced Clover to the internet (seriously, I wasn't expecting that post to blow up, over here and on Pinterest, I still get notifications almost two years later), I became infected with the Clover virus, I couldn't stop drawing her, so I spent almost an entire night just sketching outfits for her (as the depicted above, 1 is her golf outfit, 2 is her tennis outfit and 3 is just a generic summer outfit)
Unfortunately my fever was cured quickly as I never finished these.
And finally, while not necessarily the last Clover drawing I've ever made (I still have so much more I wish to post), this one became my definitive, final Clover design.
I posted this only on my twitter since this was just a fun way to decide her new color scheme by letting my followers vote, though of course as you can see, her colors weren't the only major change.
Why is she missing her sleeves? Why are her gloves less puffy? Why is her crown yellow instead of orange? Idk.
Ok, maybe I do know. I just wanted to draw her in the Super Mario bros style again after giving up on it during the first stages of her design, as well as simplifying her design in order to fit it. One thing I noticed while tweaking her design was that with all the three princesses, Peach, Daisy and Rosalina, they all lack something that the other two have. For example, Daisy and Peach have gloves, Rosalina doesn't.
So for clover, I decided that sacrificing her sleeves would be the move to go. About the crown, idk, I'm already regretting that choice. I wanted her to match with peach and daisy but looking back at these I've noticed the glaring problem of her having very little color variation.
An extra fun fact is that this new clover gown was based off of Peach's wedding dress in super Mario Odyssey. After all, a major piece of Clover's lore is that she's the one and only princess who actually wants to marry Bowser, seriously, she's obsessed with him, and that kinda creeps him out. So I thought it would be funny and matching that the princess who actually wants his ass would be dressed similarly to a dress I (assume) he who choose.
