Review: Noisey: Bay Area

Viceland is a great Television Channel. Shit, next to anything that has to do with sports, it’s the only thing I watch on “regular tv.” Some of my personal fav shows are: Fuck That’s Delicious, Weediquette, Huangs World, Flop House and yes, Noisey!

Next to Action Bronson’s “Fuck That’s Delicious,” I would probably say Noisey is my favorite show. I’ve been watching Noisey for a while now, way before it was on Viceland, back when Thomas Morton was hosting it, as it was only available on Vice.com.

Since coming to Viceland, Noisey with its new host, Zach Goldbaum has traveled to many different hoods, and has really put his life on the line to capture the inner happenings of some of the most dangerous hoods around the world. In Season 1, Goldbaum traveled to: Bompton, Brazil, Detroit, Chicago, plus many more. My personal favorite episode from season 1 was probably Chicago, or should I say Chiraq. Tons of fuckery, tons of goonery. Noisey at its best.

Season 2 premiered this Tuesday, as Viceland’s social media accounts blasted that they would be doing a Bay Area episode. I was immediately interested to see how they would go about doing this, I’m a Bay Area native, so I would be entertained to see what direction they would go to tell a story from the bay’s perspective. I’d for sure be bias as hell, but was very interested.

TheSlyShow.com is home to more than 200 mixshows that have highlighted music from the Bay Area, and I have had countless interviews with Bay Area rappers, Since 2004! I was more than enthused to watch this episode. I wasn’t asked to be in this episode, but that’s okay, I was still watching as a fan of the show.

The verdict:

Noisey’s depiction of the Bay Area is what you can call “playing it safe.” They touched the major cities, and featured some of the major players the bay has such as: E-40, Nef Tha Pharoah, DaVinci, Willie Hen, Mistah Fab, and G-Eazy, but this was average as fuck.

The best description I can give this episode is a safe fight for Viceland. I’m not sure how far their bay expertise goes, but this was mediocrity, at best. The episode had its moments, but it lacked in so many areas.

Through TheSlyShow’s always growing Bay Area catalog of DJ Mixes, I’ve really only played one G-Eazy song, ever! I’m not sure what the hype is with G-Eazy, but he was one of the main pieces to this entire episode, and that was annoying. G-Eazy is nothing impressive, and it baffles my mind why so many people (Rappers) align with him. Here’s my G-Eazy theory: He’s signed to a major label, and is a walking billboard for the Bay Area, while he’s not a terrible rapper, he’s a safe choice. I can’t say he’s wack as shit, but he shouldn’t be the centerpiece to a region that offers so much more. G-Eazy is a pop star. Little Girls like him. He shouldn’t be in this episode, and tries way too hard. Gerald, stop it.

This episode had its moments, though. They showed some police brutality taking place in Vallejo, while showing  what an Oakland protest looks like. Gentrification was also a huge part to this episode, which was refreshing, as its been one of the Bay Area’s biggest problems in recent years. Vallejo, Oakland, and San Francisco were well represented, and for the most part, Viceland tried. I’ll give them that. G-Eazy’s Mom was cool for about 2 seconds, till she said Oakland is bigger than San Francisco, Nope. Wrong. That was the only “error” I saw, and if you’re gonna have an error, I’ll take that!

My expectations were naturally gonna be very high, as I live for the bay, with  my whole life is centered around Bay Area things. Does this episode give the Bay a proper tribute? I guess, but a lot  was missed. Lots!

Here’s what was missing in this episode:

1) Mac Dre was never referenced 2) The Jacka was never referenced 3) Could’ve had an Oakland Rapper like Saafir or Hiero or Paris or Boots Riley or anyone to talk about police brutality. 4) Berner of Cookies SF was left out 5) No Homeboy/ Latin Rappers were included 6) Javi Picazo was left out 7) EvenOdds was left out 8) Cannabis Club Culture was left out 9) No Dubnation references 10) G-Eazy was in this

I am a huge fan of Noisey, and hope that next time they come through they paint a better picture. Good effort, but when we look back at this episode, it was average. I’ll give this a solid 6.5/10.
