Off Campus watch through: episode 2

FIFTH LINE!? You mean knock-off gossip girl? THEY'RE IN COLLEGE! Do they live in a small town or something? What am I missing?

This show would make so much sense if they were like 18 and in boarding school high school. At least then their dialogue would make sense. I mean, I’m not expecting corporate law speak, but some of it is really bad. Garrett’s especially.

Allie(?) reminds me of old girl from Gen V, just brunette.

This water bottle scene is what made me want to watch the show after not being interested in the trailer. They had it roll the perfect length, and the, “He’s looking now.” was delivered perfectly.

Baby boy from The Pitt being the prettiest guy of the cast yet having like two scenes.

Positive comment: I love the lead girl’s voice. Female characters having deep voices is always cool. She also looks like a young Brooke Shields. Lastly in a shallow way, I need her bras. Wherever the costume department got them from, they need to drop links.

Garrett is bland, and I feel like I’m being force fed their spark. I’m sure it’s because they don’t have a full season of episodes to draw it out.

Maybe it’s not only the dialogue, but Garrett’s line delivery? Main Girl is most certainly out acting him.

Allie(?) is gorgeous, her boyfriend annoying.

Jules means well, but Hannah (I finally logged her name in my brain), was unknown in the hockey circle. I really don’t get why anyone IN COLLEGE would think she’s too different for a jock. She’s white, her boobs are big, she’s skinny, and she’s pretty. Physically, she’s exactly who a college athlete would go for.

“I don’t know her personally, but I’m pretty sure that’s JLO.” was the funniest line thus far.

I like the bed scene. It subverts the “there’s only one bed” trope nicely. ————— never mind.

I think I would like Hannah and Garrett more if I genuinely felt like they were building up to romance. It’s only episode two, yet it feels like the writing is just going through the motions until it can have the Big Revelation. I know he’s meant to be the secretly serious and smart hockey boy, but it make their dynamic boring. I think had there been more of a strangers-to-friends-to-accidental-lovers, their chemistry would fit better.

okay, not to get too deep about the hockey romance. BUT!

I actually love that Garrett and Hannah's relationship doesn't feel done in the way that a lot of romance shows like this (ie Bridgerton) leave their Main Couplings after their seasons.

Garrett still has to go through his suspension and NCAA punishment. Hannah is revisiting a wholly separate side of music composition than what she's been pursuing, and she rocks at it. They got back together, but it still feels like there's places where there could be or will be tension between them.

For example, I really hope we explore the tension of Garrett not explaining why he did what he did on the ice. Not because I think that Hannah should have to air out her business to anyone else (I actually love the way the show has handled her SA overall including the way she hasn't had to say anything to anyone unless it is wholly her choice) but because I do think that realistically Hannah would still be pretty upset that Garrett is letting Aaron Delaney continue to cause damage and ruin lives. And she would want to explain things and try to make things better, while I think Garrett would be very "No. It doesn't matter why, you shouldn't have to tell anyone your business to save my ass from my own dumb decisions".

I think that it could be a somewhat serious source of tension for them next season, and an interesting way to keep them relevant when eyes aren't focused on them. And idk if that culminates in her telling the guys, or the coach, or not telling anyone and Garrett convincing her to let him take his lumps because the decision he made may have been influenced by Delaney but that doesn't make it anyone else's fault but Garrett's. But there are so many ways that this subplot and their interpersonal tension could play out in relation to the main plot, and still cause wrinkles in it. (ex. The guys all still think he ripped into Delaney because he was a dick, and are pissed about it, and that WILL affect dynamics amongst the team.)

Anyway I love that we have that open ended-ness there to still have them learn and grow and be active participants in and influences on the plot, instead of being relegated to narrative decorations. *coughcough*anthonyandkate*coughcough*

One of my favourite things about Off Campus is that Sean (at least from my perspective) is not a bad boyfriend, he's just not right for Allie and I think that representation is sooooo important for young people nowadays.

Sean wants to make Allie feel good in bed, but he's not interested in the more adventurous sex positions that she suggests so they have to compromise. He doesn't want to drink and dance and makeout on the dance floor, but he knows she likes to party so he goes with her.

But it's not enough because the things he wants are incompatible with the things she does and THAT'S OKAY. They were right to break up and Allie and Dean are going to be SOOOOOO good together I can just feel it.

You shouldn't stay with someone just because you've always been with them or because they can offer security or because love takes work. Every relationship doesn't have to end with something terrible or someone being someone terrible, but if it's not right it should end.

My unpopular opinion is that the Off Campus series is actually really well done compared to the book. The characters are fleshed out more and the friendships are given a lot more chances to shine.

Also I need everyone to get off this “one couple per season” storyline. Bridgerton’s season arcs are okay for a first season but becomes increasingly difficult to pull off in a well executed manner the more seasons happen.

By making Off Campus season 1 a season where Hannah and Garrett are the main couple but we actually see and get to know the surrounding characters is wayyyy better storytelling
