I often get asked to do photographs for textbooks this is a very exothermic chemical reaction between zinc and sulfur. This chemical reaction is often used in rocket engines or at least was since it was featured in the book October skies about shooting rockets. This chemical reaction smells horrible due to the sulfur and has to be done outside the chemical reaction rise to completion in about 1/8 of a second.
