Raphael had, over the course of centuries, grown contemptuous of most things mortals found beautiful. Stars, however, were a different matter. Not because he found them romantic, mind you, but because they were very old, and very cold, and had watched empires fall without changing expression. He related to that.
He found her on the roof, away from the party.
He hadn’t been looking for Melihel (or so he would insist, if asked). He’d been passing through Baldur’s Gate on business. Legitimate business. Souls didn’t collect themselves.
Seated at the roof’s edge, white hair loose in the wind. Oh, it’s that ridiculous, sentimental holiday, isn’t it? He wondered where her mind was. Hopefully, in a dark place and perfectly vulnerable. The devil wearing the suit of a man lowered himself to sit beside her.
“Tell me, if I offered you one star of your very own, would you still insist on avoiding me?” He absolutely practiced that line.
Engrossed was she stargazing. Nothing new. Getting lost in the night sky was something her companions got used to. A particular star caught her interest tonight. A star, shining with an interesting, odd pinkish light, that wasn’t really a star, but a planet. Yet, it was outshining the rest.
Tail wagging stopped. A hum followed and her nose lowered.
“A star of my own?”
She huffed. Shook her head. “Stars don’t belong to anyone, devil,” she mused. “And fortunately, they are far away from your greedy, clawed reach.”
She reached for the bag of chocolates the tiefling kids gifted her earlier, her burning eyes turning towards the mortal disguise of Raphael. What a cheesy pick up line. One she wouldn’t even respond to. But. Why not indulge the obstinate fiend, just for once? Since it’s lover’s day…
“However, let’s say, you somehow would have been able to succeed in your task,” she added, a smirk tugging at her plump lips, licking away the remnants of the patisserie she had earlier. “I would feel the need to commend your effort. Going to such a length for a tiefling ol’ me? What a darling.”
Her tail swished behind her. “Then, I would have scolded you,” she continued, extending him a heart-shaped praline in an offer. Then her tail hit his smaller back lightly, teasingly. A wink. “Thief.”
She chuckled. “But in any case— it’s a very demanding task, to avoid you. You are one stubborn devil, aren’t you?”

SITTING IN SOMEONE'S LAP
All around them elegant dresses, precious gowns, laughter, drinks, false pleasantries. It seems the whole nobility from Baldur’s gate gathered at Lady Jannath's estate, curious about the latest paintings on auction.
“If you could be so kind as to remind me, Raphael,” the tiefling whispered, adjusting her dress - golden, made of thousands of glittering scales that shimmered under candelabra. Her favourite colour, an exquisite contrast with her dark skin. “...Why am I even here?”
The invitation came suddenly, without warnings— the same way Raphael always popped by, rhyming and teasing, because he couldn’t live without his theatrics, could he now?
Before she could even fully grasp the situation, she was already perched in the devil’s lap in one of the many lounge rooms of the vast villa.
It was easy to blend in with the rest of the guests: born in a higher hierarchy, raised as a noble, putting on the mask once more was nothing special. Polite smiles, manners, even dancing. All came natural, like the rest of her life hasn’t drastically changed months ago.
On the other hand… What was really difficult was the act she was putting on with Raphael. Her…what did he say? Partner? Companion? ‘Just act like we’re together!’ She protested at the idea. Tried to reason. Of course she did. Like he hadn’t got any other more suitable actor? She sighed. So stubborn and cryptic and bossy, always.
“Anything catching your eye?” Her arm slung around his neck, resting casually on his shoulder. Like they did this every day, any day, like the touch was normality and not a practised act. Her tail nervously oscillated down from the seat, while the sorceress tried to distract herself with well executed paintings in ornate frames. “I like the one depicting a field at night. The author put very few stars on the canvas, but it makes everything more… melancholic.”
She pointed at the artwork she described. A pity, not having a home where to hang it. Oh, well. That would have to wait for some time longer. “What do you think?”

"As Gale of Waterdeep as one could ever be!" he replied, brushing the dust of the road from his robes. A habit formed over years of wandering city streets and harbouring the persistent hope of appearing presentable before fellow mages. A mildly fruitless effort, perhaps, given that he would soon be changing into his camp clothes.
Still, it was good practice to remain presentable.
"Perhaps a bit worn and weary from recent events, but nonetheless, I can assure you I remain as knowledgeable and academically gifted as ever." A faint smile followed. "Though… a touch hungry as well. Care to join me for dinner? I intend to prepare an evening meal for my fellow travellers, lest they grow too hungry and bicker even more than usual."
His tone softened, but eyes alit with an excitement that only knowledge and wonder coudl alight in Gale's eyes. "I would very much enjoy the company of someone academically inclined. I'm certain we both have ample stories from our academy days to share… alongside the meal, of course."
“Oh, so you’re the one feeding this merry band?” The tiefling’s tail wagged. She herself felt quite famished, after battling and exploring around. “I wouldn’t dare to decline such a generous offer.”
Melihël chuckled. He hadn’t really changed much, had he? Yep, tadpoles or not, Gale remained… well, Gale. His thoughts were always projecting the next spell to cast or magic to learn. Does he dream about them, too? (Futile question. Most probably.)
“We could talk about our respective experiences at Waterdeep and about the wondrous mysteries of the weave, but— let’s save those for the journey ahead. Right now… Right now, I’m more curious about your expertise as a chef,” she mused, reminiscing about her time as a young, unblemished student. Ah, that golden era seemed so very far away now, in strange lands and even stranger times.
But the acclaimed Gale of Waterdeep, a cook? What a surprise! How curious she got! “I don’t remember any cuisine lessons back at Blackstaff, so… where have you learned?”
Tail oscillating, sleeves rolling up, the tiefling moved ahead, with the mage on her side, towards the improvised cooking station. “But first, do you need a hand in prepping anything? I might not be an acclaimed chef, but months of travelling helped with acquiring new survival skills.”
