The cult classic film, The Crow, follows the story of Eric Draven, a man who comes back from the dead to execute the gang who murdered him and his fiance. Director Alex Proyas gave the film a distinctive gothic look similar to the empire of the original “Batman” movies. Unfortunately, however, during filming there was a tragedy which cost a member of the main cast his life. Brandon Lee - son of Bruce Lee - played the character of Eric Draven. During shooting, Lee was shot and killed while filming a scene in which his character was shot and killed. This scene was removed and instead, Draven is thrown to his death from a window.

In the scene, Michael Massee fires a .44 Magnum revolver at Lee as he enters the room to find his girlfriend being beaten and raped by the gang. The gun had been loaded with blank rounds which feature a live powder charge and primer but no bullet. However, earlier in the day the crew had created their own dummy cartridges by dumping the powder charge from live rounds and then reinserting the bullets. Somebody then left the live primer at the rear of the cartridge. This caused the bullet to be fired with the same force as a live round. Lee was shot in the abdomen. He was rushed to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, North Carolina, where he died from his injuries.

Following his untimely death, another $8 million was added to the $15 million budget so that the film could be completed. Portions of the film had to be rewritten and scenes were added by using computer graphics. The Crow was subsequently tainted as being the movie in which Brandon Lee tragically lost his life. Despite the tragedy, it swiftly became a cult classic, grossing over $50 million in the US on its release.

Perhaps one of the most mind-boggling unsolved cases to the FBI is Ricky McCormick’s encrypted notes. On June 30th, 1999, the 41-year-old’s body was discovered in a Missouri corn field after having been missing for a whole three days. Police found the location of his body to be strange, as it was 15 miles from where Ricky lived and he did not own a car, nor were there any public transportation served in that area. Since his body was already in its early stages of decomposition, police ascertained he had been dead for at least a few days, but there were no indications that he was murdered. In fact, his cause of death appeared to be a mystery, so police initially ruled out homicide. That was until twelve years later, when the FBI announced that Ricky McCormick was indeed murdered. But then they revealed a shocking clue that they had never disclosed to the public before: inside Ricky’s pockets contained two cryptic notes in his handwriting, which investigators believe were written three days prior to his death. The notes consisted of ‘’a jumble of letters and numbers occasionally set off with parentheses’’. This also struck police as odd, considering that all who knew Ricky claimed Ricky was an illiterate and only knew how to write his name. The FBI was convinced that the cipher messages would point toward whoever was responsible for the murder, but all attempts made to decipher their meaning led to failure. To this day, the two coded notes are listed as one of the FBI’s Cryptanalysis and Racketeering Records Unit’s top unsolved cases.

Australian 'backpacker killer' Ivan Milat dies

Milat murdered seven hitchhikers between 1989 and 1992 and dumped their bodies in a state forest.

Ivan Milat, the infamous ‘’Backpacker Killer’’, had died at a Sydney hospital at the age of 74 after battling stomach cancer and terminal oesophagus. For all of his life, he denied his involvement in the murders he was accused of and took his secrets with him to the grave, leaving behind a trail of other unsolved murders he was suspected of committing.

Cathy Cesnik was a Catholic religious sister who taught drama and English at an all-girls high school in Baltimore, Maryland. On November 7, 1969, Cathy left her apartment to run some errands. At 4:40 AM the next morning, her car was discovered covered in mud and illegally parked across from her apartment complex. But there was no sign of Cathy in or anywhere near the car. Police searched everywhere for her, but they were unable to find any trace or clue as to where Cathy might have disappeared off to. Until two months later. In January 1970, a hunter and his son found a woman’s decomposing body in a landfill. The body was confirmed to be that of Cathy Cesnik. The autopsy revealed she had died from an intracerebral hemorrhage after being hit in the left temple by a blunt instrument, which had fractured her skull as a result. Maggots were discovered inside her mouth and trachea as well. Years after the discovery of her body, many dark secrets began to emerge when a few women came forward claiming they were sexually abused by Father Joseph Maskell, one of the priests who worked at the school. Soon, Cathy allegedly found out about the abuse and tried to protect the girls. The case remains unsolved, but it is widely believed Sister Catherine was killed to keep her mouth shut.

Samuel little

Samuel Little confessed to murdering nearly 100 people across the US between 1970 and 2005, with FBI analysts believing the nomadic killer's claims are credible.

Police have verified 50 of the former boxer's 93 confessions, while the others are awaiting confirmation.

Most of the 79-year-old's victims were black women and were believed to have been drug users, sex workers or others living on the fringes of society.

This meant their deaths were never investigated by the FBI.

The serial killer had been serving life since 2012 for the murders of three women when he confessed, with portraits he sketched of his victims emerging earlier this year.

The FBI posted a page on its website on Sunday "seeking assistance connecting victims to Samuel Little's confessions".

Elisa Lam was a 21-year-old student from Canada who was visiting Los Angeles, California, in early 2013. Unfortunately, the hotel Elisa chose to stay at—Hotel Cecil—was a notorious place for sinister happenings such as thefts, suicides, and murders. The last anyone has seen Elisa alive was on an elevator captured on surveillance. The elevator doors appeared to be malfunctioning as Elisa would push all the buttons for unknown reasons. She would continuously poke her head out of the elevator door and press herself into a corner as if hiding from someone. She would step out into the hall and began making strange gestures. Elisa then walked away from the elevator and the doors finally closed. Three weeks later, residents of the hotel complained of the water being discoloured and bitter-tasting. An employee went to inspect the water tanks on the roof and found the bloated naked body of Elisa Lam. An autopsy was done and found no trace of drugs or any other substance in her system. Her case remains unsolved, although foul play is suspected.

Valerie Solanas is also known for writing the ‘SCUM’ manifesto, a radical feminist manifesto that is frequently claimed to satire, but which Solanas herself insisted was sincere. The manifesto argues that men have destroyed the world, and that women should overthrow the patriarchy and eliminate the male sex.

Solanas and her work was relatively unknown until her attempt to murder Andy Warhol. Her crime was driven by a mixture of frustration that a play she had written had not been produced and paranoid ideation brought on by undiagnosed schizophrenia. The crime led to her being detained at a psychiatric institute, having been found to be incompetent to stand trial, where she would be diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Following a period of treatment Solanas eventually was deemed fit to face the charges against her and she pled guilty, going on to serve three years in prison for reckless assault with intent to harm

The Genesee River Killer

Serial Killer Arthur Shawcross began his reign of terror in May of 1972, when he brutally sexually assaulted and murdered 10 year old Jake Black. Shawcross lured the young boy into the woods where he strangled him. Jake was found five months later, but with no leads, no one was arrested for his murder. A few months later, 8 year old Karen Anne Hill disappeared. She was found sexually assaulted and murdered under a bridge. Karen had mud and debris forced into her throat and clothing, as well.

Thankfully, a neighbor Shawcross with Karen by the bridge before she disappeared. In October of 1972, he was arrested for her murder. He confessed to her murder, as well as the murder of Jake Blake. Due to the lack of evidence tracing him back to Jake Blake, the charges were dropped against him. Shawcross was sentenced to 25 years for the murder of Karen Anne Hill.

Surprisingly, Shawcross was released on parole after serving 15 years in 1987. Authorities decided to seal his criminal record, as he was forced to leave Binghamton, NY after a public outcry occurred against the child killer being relocated to the area. Shawcross was then able to relocate to Rochester, NY, where after a year, his murders resumed.

In only a span of 2 years, Shawcross sexually assaulted, murdered, and mutilated 12 women, a majority of them being sex workers and drug users. His first victim, in Rochester, was 27 year old Dorothy Blackburn. She was found in the Genesee river, strangled with bite marks around her groin area on March 24th, 1988.

Next, 28 year old Anna Steffen was murdered on September 4th, 1989. Shawcross strangled and dumped Anna in a similar manner as Dorothy Blackburn. Due to her body being found far away from Blackburns, police didn’t think that this was the work of serial killer.

In October 1989, 59 year old Dorothy Keeler. She was strangled. Only 6 days later, 25 year old Patricia Ives was found, strangled as well. Due to this link, the press grew interested in the murders. They even name the murderer “the Genesee River Killer”.

June Scotts murder showed Shawcross growing and experimenting as a murderer as she was found strangled as well as mutilated after death. Shawcross removed her labia and gutted her from her throat to her crotch area. Scott was found on Thanksgiving.

29 year old Elizabeth Gibson was found on November 27, 1989. She was found in Wayne county. Before her disappearance, Gibson was seen with a suspect called “Mitch”. After the murder of Dorothy Keeler, police found out that there was a regular among sex workers that they called “Mitch”. They described him as “prone to violence”.

On December 31st, 1990, police found pants belonging to 20 year old Felicia Stephens. This lead police to conduct an aerial search of the area. This lead to the discovery of the body of 33 year old June Cicero on January 2, 1990. She was laying on the surface of the frozen river by a bridge.

Instead of retrieving her body, the authorities decided to keep surveillance on the area as they profiled that the killer would come back to the scene of the crime to relieve the pleasure of the experience. Thankfully, they were right.

Arthur Shawcross was apprehended after he was caught masturbating and urinating on the bridge where Junes body was found. He finally confessed after jewelry belonging to June Cicero was found in his girlfriend possession. Shawcross also confessed to the murders of Maria Welsh and Darlene Trippi. His confession ended up being 80 pages long.

During his trail, he tried to plea insanity as he claimed he was sexually abused as a child as well as suffering from PTSD due to fighting in the Vietnam war, where he claimed to have cannibalize 2 women  and decapitate many children. He was declared sane and was convicted of 10 counts  of second degree murder in Monroe county and 1 count of second degree murder in Wayne county. He was given 250 years in prison. Shawcross died of cardiac arrest on November 10th, 2008

Photograph from John Wayne Gacy's crawl space in his house which soon became a crime scene. Gacy, also known as the killer clown would lure in young boys before raping and murdering them he would then bury their remains in his crawlspace underneath his house. All of the murders took place in his Norwood Park Ranch home in Illinois. On March 13th 1980, Gacy was sentenced to death for 12 of the 33 murders he committed. He died by lethal injection on May 10th 1994.

On August 10, 2017, Swedish freelance journalist Kim Wall boarded the 40-tonne midget submarine UC3 Nautilus in Refshaleøen, Copenhagen, Denmark. which was invented by Peter Madsen. She planned to pitch an article about the submarine for the American magazine Wired.  When the submarine carrying Kim and Peter never returned to the harbor at the expected time, Kim’s boyfriend reported her as missing. Rescue service missions were sent out to scour the area, and eventually, the submarine was spotted in the bay just south-east of Amager by Drogden lighthouse at 10:30. Shortly after, the submarine began sinking. Peter Madsen was rescued by a private boat and brought back to shore. However, there was still no sign of the 30-year-old journalist. Peter explained to authorities that Kim had already been dropped off at a restaurant near the habor. In a strange turn of events, Peter suddenly changed his story the next day, claiming that there had been a terrible accident on the submarine. He recounted that when Kim tried exiting the hatch, the hatch door fell and hit her over the head and killed her. In a panic, he threw her body into the sea. The wreckage of the submarine was investigated and it was determined that the sinking was no accident.

On August 21, only a little over a week since Kim’s declared missing status, a human torso washed up on the beach in the south-west of Amager. It didn’t take long for it to be identified as belonging to Kim. The torso was revealed to have sustained fifteen stab wounds, primarily in the genitals, and a piece of metal was tied to it in an attempt to weigh it down to the seabed. Soon, police divers would recover the rest of Kim’s dismembered parts in the sea, including a knife and saw. It is believed that Peter had either slashed the journalist’s throat or strangled her. In January 2018, Peter Madsen was charged with murder, indecent handling of a corpse, and sexual assault. In April that year, he was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment.
