Running away from feelings and friends

Nitro took the E-tank gratefully and took a few large gulps from it. She could feel the energy boost but it did little for the emotional exhaustion.
“Thanks… For the E-tank and everything else.”
She looked down as she played with the can in her hands.
“It helps.”
She then let out a humorless snort.
“It’s funny. All this time I’ve been trying to avoid this exact thing but I think it’s what I needed. Sorry for yelling at you though.”
“Hey! Hey, no need to apologize. Things have been rough for you, I get that. You can be honest with me. No press, no secret cameras, none of that. Just you and me out in the middle of nowhere.”
He really wished he could do more, but Nitro was probably right. What she probably needed was somewhere she could be herself again, and not trying to prove to the world she was no longer a threat.
Nitro felt herself slump as she let the last of her bitter emotions go. She felt empty and raw but it was better than before. Like an infected cut that needed to be cleaned out otherwise it would just fester and get worse. That’s what she’d been doing, just holding in all the bad emotions making them hurt even more, but now they’d been let out and she could heal.
She let the rest of her armor disengage leaving her in her civilian clothes and curled up against her friend. She’d never let herself be so vulnerable and weak before, but Turbo was right. Here there were no cameras, no fans, no expectations. She could just be as she was.
“Can we stay like this? Just for a bit longer?”
