Why I think the sugarbowl is empty:

I think VFD told Beatrice to steal it from Esmé because they needed it because it's important, so she did it, and they told Kit to give her a box of poison darts during intermission, and they did it because they trust VFD, they thought they were being noble

But really they wanted the sugarbowl generation to split in two. They wanted Olaf to become an orphan, they wanted to get his fortune, they knew Olaf would be a problem, so they tried to kill 2 birds with one stone: kill the family, get the fortune.

Also, if everyone hated eachother, they would cling to VFD more, aka:

Kit. She chose her brothers and VFD over Olaf, right? They had Kit wrapped around thier finger.

Also, The Sugarbowl could have been what Kit stole from the Museum in ATWQ.

And they used it as a decoy the whole time so they could have everyone who wanted to leave, stay.

They knew everyone wanted the sugarbowl, and if everyone wanted the sugarbowl, then no one that was once in VFD would really leave because the ones who tried to take the sugarbowl, they did it to get revenge on VFD. VFD knew they were easily manipulated, so it would be useful to keep them tagged along.

Esmé and Olaf wanted the sugarbowl because

1) it was Esmé's

2) they were told it is important

3) they could get revenge on vfd if they had the most important thing to the organization, but really if they had it they would be stuck into the organization even more.

So really, whomever is top tier of VFD really is a meanie.

Though, we already knew that.

the Netflix ASOUE series is really interesting bc the books were originally marketed as childrens’ books but as children’s books that REALLY didnt want to be children’s books, largely due to Handler (Snicket) not even wanting to write children’s books in the first place and deciding that if he had to write children’s books, he was gonna fuck with the whole damn genre (and that’s why there’s the common theme of ‘look away’ as if to say ‘these books really, really arent what you’re expecting’) and thats a big reason why it took off so much among children; it was basically taking them to the side and saying, “look, we both know children’s media is godawful. im not gonna do any of the stuff that children’s authors usually do, but you can read the books if you want to. dont say i didnt warn you though.”

like daniel handler literally went to schools as himself and told the kids that ‘lemony snicket’ couldnt make it and would often go on rants about how life is disappointing. partially because he didnt wanna play a character but also because he knew the kids would see right through it every time and they did. “they’re in school, they’re used to being lied to,” he said.

and now that those kids have grown up and bought Netflix accounts, the inside jokes are still going; every time Snicket tells you to stop watching, you just smile and think “oh, come on, i know how this goes.”
