I am back with a new series of sketches for the upcoming, ridiculously, superhero packed, Marvel Comics Annual on steroids for the screen – AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR! I am going to try and sketch this batch to look more like the versions in the MCU. Here he is, the big bad would be savior (in his own mind) of the universe, and wielder of the infinity gauntlet... THANOS! THE MAD TITAN! First comic appearance The Invincible Iron Man Vol. I # 55 February, 1973. Created by Jim Starlin and Mike Friedrich.
When you have a war that features Darkseid and the Anti-Monitor fighting each other, you've got nothing but trouble. Throw in the Justice League and an illegitimate kid and the shit hits the fan. First appearance of Darkseid – Cameo in Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #134 November 1970 First full appearance – Forever People Vol. I #1 February 1971 Created by Jack "King" Kirby.
Len Wein passed away yesterday at age 69. A sad loss for comics and fans. If you discovered comics in the 70s, like me, then there's probably no one more important in the character creation world than Len. He made people give a crap about the X-men again by creating a new international team. Of course used a little character he created for the Hulk named Wolverine. He also had a hand in DC's most famous non superhero, Swamp Thing. Here's a quick sketch in memory of Len.
Was having trouble posting this earlier, so it's a few hours late... Happy 100th to the King!
Quick sketch for Spider-Man Homecoming. First comic appearance Amazing Fantasy Vol. I August 1962. Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. First MCU appearance US June 2017.
From the pages of The Mighty Thor comes… EL VAMPIRO!!! He may look like a cheap Batman knockoff, but Vampiro is an Eternal who eventually found himself acting as a Luchadore. After facing an opponent, El Toro Rojo, who turned out to be an Earth Deviant, EV was injured. He tried to fly home but the goring form one of Toro’s horns was too deep and he fell from the sky only to be discovered by Thor, who helped him home. El Toro Rojo tried to attack EV again but was thwarted with the help of the Thunder God. El Vampiro’s whereabouts are currently unknown. He has many of the usual Eternal powers as well as the ability to fly. Although he has fangs, it’s never ben clarified as to whether he is truly a vampiric creature.
First appearance The Mighty Thor Vol. I #290 December 1979. Created by Roy Thomas and Arvell Jones.
From the pages of the Eternals comes... MAKARRI!!! Makkari is an immortal from, Olympia, the home of the Earth race of Eternals. He served Eternals' Technologist's Guild and is skilled at designing and building high-speed vehicles. Makarri was very often confused with Mercury, the God of speed. most recently, after many adventures with Earth’s heroes and Gods, Makarri chose to be the prophet of Tiamut the Communicator, the Dreaming Celestial. His current powers are superhuman strength and speed.
First appearance as Mercury, Red Raven Comics #1 August 1940. Created by Martin A. Burstein.
First appearance as Hurricane Captain America Comics #1 March 1941
First appearance as Makarri Eternals #1 July 1976. Created by Jack Kirby.
Eternals, genetically manipulated by the Celectials, they were made to be better than humans and practically immortal. This is… THENA!!! The Eternal Woman Warrior! Born in the ancient Greek city, Olympia and originally names Azura, her father Zuras, changed her name to resemble Zeus’s daughter Athena, which sealed a treaty between the Greek gods and the Eternals. She is equal parts scholar and warrior. She fought against the Deviant warlord Kro but eventually the two developed feelings and had twins after making love while engaged in the Vietnam war. At one point the was the Eternals leader, the Prime Eternal. Over the years she has fought alongside the Avengers especially Thor. Her powers include Superhuman speed, strength, durability, and regeneration, Energy blast generation, Flight, Illusion, Matter transmutation, Mind control, Telekinesis, Telepathy and Teleportation.
First appearance The Eternals Vol. I #5 November 1976. Created by Jack Kirby.
Here's a custom comic cover that I started a while ago but finished yesterday, for a character I discovered when I started college... JUDGE DREDD!!! He is the law in Mega City 1!!! After civilization collapsed, a new order arose where the police of the future are judge, jury and executioner. Of all these judges, Dredd is the best. First appearance 2000 AD #2 March 1977. Created by John Wagner, Carlos Ezquerra and Pat Mills.
