#JackedKirby - Kirby’s Vlad the Impaler (Dracula)... inked by Mike Mignola!!!! 🧛🏻‍♂️🧛🏻‍♂️🧛🏻‍♂️ Every once in a while in our quest to devour everything Kirby we can we stumble upon something we have never SEEN BEFORE... something that has slipped through the cracks of Jack’s illustrious and decades spanning career. I stumbled upon one of those pieces of art yesterday when i saw this awesome Kirby Dracula piece... and it’s inked by Hellboy Creator Mile Mignola!!! 🧛🏻‍♂️🧛🏻‍♂️🧛🏻‍♂️ The piece is actually an image that was on the back of 8 separate trading cards that were included with the Vlad the Impaler comic series. The comics were published from February to April 1993 by Topps Comics (pics 3/4/5) and since the trading card company was new to the comic game they wanted something to draw attention to their products. So since it was the 90s that means they polybagged the issues and included 3 cards with each one... 9 cards in total (Pic 6 is all 9 cards). 🧛🏻‍♂️🧛🏻‍♂️🧛🏻‍♂️ The cards were designed by various artists like Alfredo Acala, Sam Kieth and Mike Mignola... but the real prize was on the backs of the cards!!! The large Dracula image penciled by Kirby and inked by Mignola could be assembled by putting all 9 cards together... a really cool add on! 🧛🏻‍♂️🧛🏻‍♂️🧛🏻‍♂️ Kirby was a major contributor to Topps Comics, lending his name/reputation as well as many of his undeveloped ideas to the fledgling comic line in its infancy. He also recruited industry heavyweights like Jerry Siegel, Steve Ditko, Roy Thomas and others to contribute to the various titles as a way to earn some income outside the traditional 2 party company system of Marvel and DC. The results were not met with overwhelming success... but it wasn’t a complete abject failure either. Never before had I launched a series with #1, been responsible for pencilling 24-28 pages a month, or had such a hand in creating all new characters like #machete, #moonstalker, and #ladyrawhide to be part of #zorrosrenegades.
