“And here I half expected all of you to be avoiding this house like the plague for the next month.” Laura teased, dropping down onto the couch. She couldn’t blame them, she’d hated family Christmas as a kid, and there were a lot less Hales back then than there were Whittemores now. “So what’s up?”

“Me? Avoid my home?” Talia asked her mom as she dropped on the couch beside her unable to stop herself as she curled up against her finding comfort in being close to her mom. “Besides unlike most of my siblings I actually enjoy family time. I love being close to you all. It’s where I feel the safest.”

Talia had known that law school was going to be more grueling that anything she had ever done, but she was trying to have a better balance. “Okay no talk of school for an entire weekend, you have my entire undivided attention.”

“Good to know.” Reagan laughed. “Do you think we’ll ever be capable of cooking?”

“Maybe a grilled cheese if we really tried.”

“Hey, we shared a womb. I’m the only person allowed to mock you but kick anyone else’s ass that tried, I get a free pass.”

“That doesn’t mean you get a free pass if I want to throw a pillow at your face. You can never take it from me.”

“Okay, I was an idiot in high school. I spent way too much time around Miles to be healthy.” Connor shook his head with a laugh. He loved his brother, but he knew they were a bad mix when they were teenagers. “I’m sorry I ever made you doubt that.”

“Your brother still hasn’t quite gotten it together,” She reminded him deciding to give up on the school work in order to curl up against his chest breathing his scent in, “What matters is that I have you now. You’re all mine and I will fight Miles on it.”

“You are a godsend, Talia.” She sighed, taking a drink. “My need for this is practically medical today.”

“The real godsend is you but I do try,” She assured her with a warm smile, “What’s going on?”

“Are we talking about the same last time or was there another one I haven’t heard about?”

“Depends on what one you’re talking about. If it involves pasta then it’s the same one.”

“You’re more alike than you’re different, and I think Kieran prefers it that way. I’m happy just knowing that you seem to be happy.”

“I am happy. For once in my entire life it feels like I have everything going for me at one time and like everything actually feels complete which is a strange feeling.”

“You can’t blame me for having to check, though.”

“Considering the last time I did try to cook it didn’t turn out great I don’t blame you for checking.”

“There is not enough coffee in the world today.” Gwen sighed, running a hand through her hair.

“Are you sure?” Talia asked before she slid a drink in front of her best friend, “We can at least try.”

“If I wanted to do damage Tal, I’d have done damage. But you know I’d never do that.” 

“I know. I also know as big and bad as you pretend to be you’re the softest person when it comes to me.”

“Of course it’s something I want, Tal. You don’t really worry that it’s not, do you?”

“Not now,” Talia assured him knowing she meant her words full heartedly, “ I know how you feel about me know. But in school? That was different.”

“Believe me, you’ve kicked my ass enough that I couldn’t ever forget.”

“I only ever kicked your ass when you let me. Don’t even pretend like I had a fighting chance if you wanted to do damage.”

“I’d hope at this point you’ve at least accepted it, or still like that about me.” Connor shrugged, grinning, “I’m still doing something right.”

“I’ve always accepted it I just wasn’t sure if it was something you’d want. You’re always doing something right though.”

“I know, Tal. And you’re mine,” he promised. “You’ve never gotta worry about that, alright? I’ve gotta stick around to be a pain in your ass for a long time.”

“You better keep that promise or else I’m going to come and kick your ass and you know I can.”

“I didn’t really have much of a say in that, but I’m glad you got to have that too.” Laura argued with a grin, “having all of you has made me a better person. And you and Kieran are too much alike sometimes.”

“I mean we did share a womb. I’d be more worried about us if we weren’t similar in some ways. But I know you didn’t have a say, but I still appreciate it.”

“Okay, that’s a relief,” Reagan laughed, lifting herself onto the counter out of habit. “smells good, though, what is it?”

“My usual from the Chinese place down the street. He ordered it last night so I’d have it today.”
