Gaston really is the most terrifying Disney villain because he could be anyone in the world.
Later he convinces the whole town to set up his wedding with the knowledge that the would-be bride would be thrown into it. Everyone finds his creepy-ass tactics as cute and “boys will be boys” esque. So yeah, he is terrifying.
Yeah, the truly scary thing about Beauty and the Beast isn’t that Gaston exists, but that society fucking loves him. People who deride the movie by saying it’s about Stockholm Syndrome are ignoring that it’s actually about the various ways that truly decent people get othered by society. People don’t trust the Beast because of the way he looks, which only feeds his anger issues and pushes him further away. Gaston isn’t the only one who criticizes Belle for being bookish, either; the whole town says there must be something wrong with her. And her father gets carted off to a mental asylum for being just a little eccentric.
Howard Ashman, who collaborated on the film’s score and had a huge influence on the movie’s story and themes, was a gay man who died of AIDS shortly after work on the film was completed. If you watch the film with that in mind, the message of it becomes clear. Gaston demonstrates that bullies are rewarded and beloved by society as long as they possess a certain set of characteristics, while nice people who don’t are ostracized. The love story between Belle and the Beast is about them finding solace in each other after society rejects them both.
Notice how the Beast reacts when the whole town comes for him. He’s not angry, he’s sad. He’s tired. And he almost gives up because he has nothing to live for. But then he sees that Belle has come back for him, and suddenly he does. In the original fairy tale, the Beast asks Belle to marry him every night, and the spell is broken when she accepts. In the Disney movie, he waits for her to love him, because he cannot love himself. That’s how badly being ostracized from society and told that you’re a monster all your life can fuck with your head and make you stop seeing yourself as human.
Society rewards the bullies because we’ve been brought up to believe that their victims don’t belong. That if someone doesn’t fit in, then they have to be put in their place, or destroyed. And this movie demonstrates that this line of thinking is wrong. It’s so much deeper than a standard “be yourself” message, and that’s why it’s one of my favorite Disney movies.
Reblogging for commentary.

These pumps, crafted by Mexican designer Lucita Abarca, caused quite a stir at a recent Sixth Borough fashion show. These crystalline high-heels were grown by Wyrm’s Pass artisans, deep below the Rocky Mountains, using a mixture of firebird ash, waters from the springs at Paradiso, and a variety of secret ingredients, rumored to include Australian fire opals and powdered moonstone. The result of using the firebird ash become immediately recognizable when the heel of the shoe is dragged backward across any dry surface, as it creates an impressive streak of magical fire which can be accurately aimed with a little effot. Ms. Abarca said she wanted a shoe that made a statement, and that statement was “Any bastardo brujo catcalling me on La Plaza de Sangre better be ready to dose his huevos, you know?”
I should probably get a sun lamp.
The least favorite part of the motherhood club is the part where the friends who aren't mothers are repeatedly told, "you're not a mother, you wouldn't understand" or "thanks for the thought but i'm over the advice people are googling" or "how do you know? you're not a mom." Etc.
Unless I'm being a fucking harpie to your kid, maybe I know because I am a woman, I am a human, and there are certain things that women and people just know, or should abide by. Etc.
Maybe I'm just that depressed, that this is yet another annoyance. But this is why I backed out of the room, because it's a club I'm not part of, and I'd rather avoid the hurt that comes with the pointed reminder.
Stop thinking about art works as objects, and start thinking about them as triggers for experiences… That solves a lot of problems … Art is something that happens, a process, not a quality, and all sorts of things can make it happen … [W]hat makes a work of art ‘good’ for you is not something that is already ‘inside’ it, but something that happens inside you …

Very timely.
People: if someone loves ALL OF THE THINGS, then let them, and open your mind. It doesn't mean they are unstable, it doesn't mean they're in crisis, it means they cannot be boxed in my society's stringent guidelines for stability and knowing oneself. Among other stuff, I guess.
Anyway, yeah.
I was in Times Square for this show. Yeezy and Bruce got me out in the cold, rainy, crowded night, and it was one of the best things I've ever seen. It was also a fully surreal, fully NYC moment.
I'll never not love Yeezy, and I refuse to apologize for that.

my hairstyle today is called the "everybody just leave me alone."
Oh what the hell, brain?
Most of my dreams, when I remember them, are pretty strange. Not Harry Potter strange, but odd nonetheless. One of them a few weeks ago featured a dance break, lots of location-hopping, and Timothy Olyphant. Of course.
Last night, I dreamt a lumpy Jay Cutler was being run out of town by Bears fans. Note: I am not a Bears OR a Cuts fan (if you can't see, my avatar's wearing a GB jersey), hadn't been watching football or reading about him, and had absolutely no reason for him to make an appearance as I slept, but there he was. The scene that's somehow still with me was of him in these rosy-pink linen or cargo shorts and a tannish t-shirt, walking toward KCav and the Cutlet, who were holding hands. KCav's hair hung in long curls and she wore white pants. She held the Cutlet's hand, and Jay grabbed his other one, and they slowly, sadly, made their way out of Soldier Field.
Note to my subconscious: please leave Jay Cutler out of it. Thanks.
You can be depressed and not feel sad or blue. Depression can also be a haze of sleepiness, distractedness/obsessiveness cycles, and a twinge of irritability that can be hard to recognize because you might already be a “fiery” person. It can feel like a lazy Sunday that keeps imposing itself for weeks or months.
This has been most of my 2013-2014.
The Brown Family Statement stresses a campaign to start getting body cameras on cops. Hit up whoismyrepresentative.com to find your senators and write to them.
Let’s get on this and make a difference, guys.
I feel we are at a turning point in the country. Body cameras on police officers is just the tip of the iceberg but it is a starting point and one specifically requested by Mike Brown’s family. I just contacted all of my representatives. You should too. Below is what I sent and I have no problem with others using it too. Feel free to copy and paste.
"In light of recent events, I am writing to request that you make it a priority to create a law requiring police officers working on the streets to wear tamper-proof body cameras. In addition to severely limiting unwarranted police brutality, they can also serve as evidence in fair trials against those who knowingly break the law.
To those officers who complain about a lack of privacy or trust, I would like to point out that there has not been many incidents in our country in recent years to promote feelings of trust towards the police in many major cities. Not only that but many people in America work in places where they are on camera 24/7. Millions of people who work in hotels, airports, offices, retail establishments and more are on camera more often than they are not.
Obviously much more needs to be done to close this rift in our country. We’ve been putting a Band-Aid on a gaping wound for the past few decades. I believe we are starting to rip that Band-Aid off and are discovering what has been festering as we have been ignoring it. I hope that the growing awareness of injustices in our country leads us to cleaning out that wound from the bottom up.
The addition of body cameras as required equipment for officers is a very small step towards justice in our communities. But it is one that will help us move towards a better future for ALL citizens who are born in this country. I hope you share in my concerns and will work towards making America a safer place for its people.”
You done good, friend. I pasted this into an email to my representative.
This is a good add-on to this post so i’m boosting it again.
You don’t know why you’re exhausted? You’re fighting a war inside your head every single day. If that’s not exhausting I don’t know what is.
