One overlooked thing that really sets the Lord of the Rings films apart from other franchises is how earnest they are-
Most movies are so afraid of being “cheesy” that whenever they say something like “friendship is the most powerful force in the world” they quickly undercut it with a joke to show We Don’t Really Believe That! ;) Even Disney films nowadays have the characters mock their own movie’s tropes (”if you start singing, I’m gonna throw up!”) It’s like winking at the camera: “See, audience? We know this is ridiculous! We’re in on the joke!”
But Lord of the Rings is just 12.5 hours of friendship and love being the most powerful forces in the world, played straight. Characters have conversations about how much their home and family and friends mean to them, how hope is eternal, how there is so much in the world that’s worth living for…. and the film doesn’t apologize for that. There’s no winking at the audience about How Cheesy and Silly All This Is; it’s just. Completely in earnest.
And when Lord of the Rings does “lean on the fourth wall” to talk about storytelling within the film, it’s never to make jokes about How Ridiculous These Storytelling Tropes are (the way most films do)…. but instead to talk about how valuable these stories can be. Like Sam’s Speech at the end of the Two Towers: the greatest stories are ones that give you something to believe in, give you hope, that help you see there are things in a bleak violent world that are worth living for
Earnestness is so much cooler than all the hip cynicism in the world. You go LOTR
I’ve never identified with something more than this

Spanish Laws TO Supress Dissent
Demonstrators with their mouths taped sit outside the Spanish parliament during a protest against the government’s new security law in central Madrid, Spain, early July 1, 2015 Juan Medina—Reuters Desecrating or burning the Spanish flag will now get you a 600 000 euro (about $850,ooo) fine. – Videotaping or taking photographs of on-duty policemen is now also illegal – 30,000 euro ($40,000) fine. This is clearly meant to make it virtually impossible for demonstrating protesters to prove that the police has used unjustifiable violence (something that’s not entirely uncommon in Spain, despite the fact that demonstrations turning into riots is an extremely rare occasion).
– Arranging a demonstration without permission – 30,000 euro.
– If you want to start a facebook group protesting the government, be prepared to pay up 30k.A social media gathering (like the one in a facebook group) counts as a demonstration and is illegal.
-If you create a social media group that -around a symbol or a flag (say you create a facebook group called “If you like the Catalonian flag, join this group”), then you’ll be subject to a 30k fine.
– Preventing a policeman from doing his job – ie. by participating in a sit-in protest and refusing to move will cost you 30,000 euro.
– Being partly or fully masked during a demonstration – 30,000 euro..
– Carrying a sign during a demonstration with a message that is critical of Spain. Basically, if you have a sign that says “Spain sucks”, then you’ll soon find yourself 30 000 poorer.
– Drawing a satirical cartoon, portraying for example a politician, will also cost you 30 000 euro.
All of these fines will be handed out without any involvement from any court – a cop will be able give a demonstrator a 30k fine just as easily as he’d been able to give someone a speeding ticket. oh my god
everyone needs to see this video at least once in their life
I think my favorite thing about dogs is that they can, in fact, perceive the tone/mood of music, just as they can with human voices.
I think the best part about this is that there was an actual academic study done to find out what music dogs preferred, they set it up by kenneling dogs and figuring out which kind of music caused them to be more relaxed in the situation, and they found out that most dogs prefer soft rock and reggae.
He probably really digs it.
If there’s one thing I’ll give 2017 over 2016, it’s that it’s kind of stunning that the year is mostly over?
2016 felt like the year that would never die.
2017 is a hectic nightmare that never slows down enough for you to be aware of the passage of time.
accurate.
Taco trucks are essentially just ice cream trucks for us in our adult years.
…One day—preferably when we’re both blind drunk—we can talk about it.
