What Is Dianic Witchcraft?

Dianic Witchcraft is an explicitly radical feminist, female exclusive tradition of Witchcraft founded formally in California in the 1970s by Hungarian immigrant and traditional witch Z. Budapest, although some adherents consider the origins of feminist witchcraft ancient and lost to the mists of time.

The term "Dianic" was first applied to Witchcraft in the 1920s by legendary scholar and suffragist Margaret Murray, who used it to describe witchcraft traditions in which a goddess--usually Diana, Hecate or a many-named Queen of Faerie--was honored instead of the Devil.

Dianic tradition is named for the Roman goddess Diana, but specifically that which was passed down through Charles Leland's cult hit folklore collection, "Aradia: The Gospel of the Witches". It simultaneously invokes the oft equated Virgin goddess Artemis.

Dianic Witchcraft is considered a form of Wicca with increasing rarity nowadays, as more practitioners reject the work of Gerald Gardner and embrace traditional folk practices as detailed in the Dianic cult's founding text, The Holy Book of Women's Mysteries.

This accounted for, Z Budapest and the Nazi-bashing, pro civil rights, literal British spy and mother of Wicca(read: the actual inventor lmao)Doreen Valiente were friends, and there are strong ties to non-initiatory Valiente-inspired Wicca yet. Probably there's an argument to be made that Wicca itself makes a wonderful candidate for a women's religion and certainly gets misogynistic hate based on this, but that's another post.

Dianic cosmology recognizes divinity as essentially female, with the Horned God/Witches' Devil either de-emphasized or not recognized as legitimate, with masculine traits instead affixed to Lesbian goddesses like Artemis.

Some practitioners(me)even go so far as honoring the Devil in the Shape of a Woman instead.

The Dianic tradition is unique in that all so-called masculine traits are also seen in the female divine, often manifest in dark goddesses like Hecate who are described in myth as equal parts vicious and androgynous.

Dianic Witchcraft encompasses a vast array of different practices and styles, now mutated far from the foundational text and spanning many books and subtraditions.

It can be defined perhaps best as any witchcraft practiced through a radical feminist separatist lens, which opens the floodgates for intuitive, ecstatic ritual, deeply individual thealogy and fast and loose interpretation of previous form.

Dianic Witchcraft is female-exclusive, but tenaciously holds assigned female intersex women like Helena Beardwomon within that category and is the first tradition to attempt to offer clerical legitimacy to butch lesbians(see: the Guardian path).

It is expected that transgender men will self-exclude, and no assigned male may practice. There IS an OG second wave radical feminist witchcraft tradition that is and has been from the beginning trans inclusive, however: Starhawk's Reclaiming. Any rad-leaning trans people reading this, go check her out!

Dianic Witchcraft has both initiatory lineages going back to Z's original founded covens and hundreds of independent practitioners not affiliated with any major Dianic organizations, of which there are many.

Dianic Witchcraft rejects the patriarchal mandate that a woman needs a priest to mediate between her and God.

Dianic Witchcraft looks at the priest and says, "I am God."

To practice Dianic Witchcraft a woman must make herself her own authority on the divine, a terrifying prospect for the female-socialized but one of endless, witchly reward.

Other key features of Dianic Witchcraft include the tendency to prioritize personal interpretation over orthodox, the keeping of a "Book of Light and Shadows" and sometimes of mirrors, the hearty approval for putting curses on men, the occasional usage of a feather in place of a phallic wand and the nine-foot red braided ritual cord representing the umbilicus.

Many modern women now hear of women's spirituality and immediately assume the gentrified, gender-essentialist New Age antifeminist versions are all that exist and have ever existed.

Not so!

While many annoying tradwifey cottagecore types exist in the broader pagan community, Dianic Witchcraft exists on the opposite end of that spectrum.

Another practitioner of folk magic may trim her hair on a Friday while the moon doth wax to attract a nice rich man to submit to, but rest assured radical feminists: the Dianics will curse him, his house, his land, his virility, bank account, hairline and entire male lineage.

So next time you wonder how someone can be a feminist and "spiritual", remember! there are both good and bad spirits, and a witch works with both hands and one foot in the grave.

An Introduction to Hekate

Hekate, Goddess of Magic, Witchcraft, the Moon, Necromancy, is believed to be not just a Goddess of the Underworld, but the living world as well. She also has dominion over crossroads, hidden knowledge, home protection, herbs, plant medicine and flowers. According to the Ancient Greek text by Hesiod, Theogony “Hecate, whom Zeus, Cronus’ son, honored above all others: he gave her splendid gifts - to have a share of the Earth and the barren sea, and from the starry sky as well she has a share in honor, and is honored most of all by the immortal gods.”

From what we can see historically, Hekate was a Goddess that was highly revered and given reign over three realms by the God of Gods. Hekate is well known to be as the triple goddess due to her association with the waxing, full and waning moon, but also some equate Hekate to the Mother, Maiden and Crone figure. She is a powerful Goddess, yet she also is a kind Goddess that will aid you in your path that you have chosen as a witch. Some of the main things you can focus on when working with Hekate when just starting off is

There are superstitions that when Hekate is near dogs will begin to bark for what seems to be no reason.

Once you begin to see signs that Hekate is responding to you and is willing to engage, a great thing to do would be to leave an offering at a crossroads during the New Moon. Rituals, offerings and spellwork during the New Moon is the perfect time to connect with Hekate since that is the phase of the moon associated with her. Some examples of offerings you can leave at the crossroads are,

Locally sourced fruits

Bones

Plants, such as Mugwort

Blood

You can also honor Hekate on the last day of the month or on the Night of Hekate, which is November 16th every year.

Lastly, an important step to making that initial connection with Hekate is creating an altar dedicated to her. On your altar you can have a statue of her or something that symbolizes her, plants associated with her and even  images of animals associated with her. Some colors you can use to decorate your altar are,

🌞 Here are a few ways of connecting with the elements that I have always found useful!

Fire:

Take a walk on a sunny day. Notice the warmth of the sun on your back and the light that filters through closed eyelids. Drink in the light.

Turn off the lights. Spend the evening in candlelight, or sat by the fireplace.

Honour your inner dragon and eat spicy food, visualising the heat of your breath is fire as you exhale.

Take the initiative. Finish neglected projects with fiery ambition, feel the spark in your veins as you burn through what weighs you down.

Observe how fire takes on more forms than you think. Do you feel the raw electricity in your TV? Is it too much to bare sometimes? Can the light of life in a newborn’s eyes be considered fire?

Air

Imagine that the next breath you take will be the first of your life. As you exhale, think it is your last. How does it make you feel?

Indulge your creativity. Read, write, create. Be a force of inspiration and let your thoughts wander.

Move your arms back and forth as if you could move the air with the power of your will. Feel the cool sensation of the movement on the palm of your hands and visualise sculpting a ball of air.

Take a walk on a windy day. Note the movements of the wind, how it changes everything around you and carries energy and fragrance through empty space. Listen between the whistling and the soft turn of the leaves to see if you can hear something more.

Go to a beach. Feel the pull and push of the tide. Mimic it with your movement; pull your arms inwards and push them out again along to the rhythm. Sync yourself with the rise and fall of the energy.

Take a moment to still yourself. Close your eyes. Place a finger on a spot where you can feel your pulse. Feel the throb of your heartbeat and the blood pumping through your veins. How does it feel to know that you carry rivers inside you?

Let your emotions spiral. No holding back. Learn how our feelings can have both positive and detrimental effects and realise that water can not only wash away problems but can also be a destructive force itself.

Take a shower and feel the water wash away everything you have ever thought or become.Be cleansed and remake yourself every single day.  Take a step backwards in your mind to a time where everything was dark and all you knew was the feeling of being surrounded by warm water. You have been a part of it since you were in the womb.

Earth

Lie down. Let the energy you hold within yourself and the energy of the earth touch, overlap, consume each other. Lose yourself for a couple of moments and forget where you begin and the ground ends.

Be a stable, reliable force. A shoulder to cry on. The friend of the group that feels like a parent in the best possible way. Find a sense of calmness within yourself and hold it firmly, not letting the positive or negative influence your tranquility. Be neutral in the face of bias but swift and forceful when the time for justice comes.

Think of a tree. Think of the roots that go far beneath the ground, holding it in place. Think of the years and years the tree has remained and endured despite everything. Realise that you can do the same.

Wake up before everyone else and observe how the world is different when everything is still.

Full moon 🌕

Full moon releasing ritual

- Paper from 2014 containing name of person

I took the supplies into the garden and in view of the full moon. I drew up energy from the earth and cast a circle, with the crystal in my pocket for extra protection. I brought the candle out already lit. I whispered my intentions and improvised with what came to me. I spoke words to release the hold over me by 'A' while holding a slip of paper with her name on that I had written in 2014 as part of a happiness jar. My intention was to release myself from the feelings I had for her in that time and to let her go, but to do so in good faith, wishing her the best for the future. I then lit the paper with the candle and dropped it into the cauldron. It went out after burning half so I lit the other corner so it could finish burning. Then I swept the remains out with the broomstick and sprinkled them over the grass (back to the earth, as I could not bury due to the building work.) I then sat down again to reflect before an exhale of releasing, then blew out the candle.

TAROT tips for Beginners 🌙

⭐︎ Cleanse your deck after you buy it!! This is so so important, because you want to start working with a new clean energy.

⭐︎ There are thousands of ways to cleanse your deck. Cleansing can be something super simple, as just knocking on your deck 3 times or placing a crystal on top of the deck! Just do what feels right.

⭐︎ Interview your deck! After you buy new cards, talk to them, ask them questions and figure out the decks personality. There are a lot of fun spreads for this.

⭐︎ Sleep with your deck. Another good way to bond with your deck is sleeping with it near you. Just put it under your pillow or somewhere close to you over night!

⭐︎ You don’t have to read reversals. It’s up to you if you decide to turn the card back around. Again, do what feels right!

⭐︎ Reversals don’t always equal opposites. If you decide to read reversals, remember that it can have completely different meaning then just being opposite of the upright position.

⭐︎ Start simple. Start out with something simple like past/present/future spread. It’s super easy and gives you clarity on any situation.

⭐︎ Spend time looking at the picture. When you pull a card, really spend time observing at all the different colors and symbols before you look up the meaning. 

⭐︎ Jumping cards usually have something important to tell you. If you’re shuffling your deck and a card jumps out, look up what it means and what message it has for you!

⭐︎ Pull a daily card each morning. This is super fun and easy. You definitely don’t need to do this everyday, but it’s a good way to memorize the cards and their meanings.

and finally, practice, practice and practice! It’s going to take a while until you remember all the meanings, but just have fun and enjoy the process!🦋
