for Bi Visibility Day I bring you my favourite bisexual existential teenage 90s anime protagonists! Utena from SKU and Shinji Ikari from NGE.

(Utena is not “that show about lesbians” when most of the cast is bi. And let’s not even begin with NGE fandom and erasure…)

We have so little representation and yet, people rarely know about this gems. They are protagonists of their stories, and the navigation of their sexuality is a pivotal theme of the narrative. Far from stereotypes, Shinji and Utena both fight against the apocalypse of the world while moving within systems that are metaphors of our society. Be prepared for mindfucks, tears and overwhelming feelings!
