A reconstruction design of the Arch of Septimius Severus, Rome
Mercury and Psyche, by Reinhold Begas
Reinhold Begas (1831 – 1911) was a German sculptor, the son of painter Carl Joseph Begas, who dominated Prussian sculpture for a generation after 1870. A pupil of Gottfried Schadow and Christian Rauch, he initially adhered to a graceful Neoclassicism. However, in 1856 he went to Italy, where he discovered the work of Michelangelo and Gianlorenzo Bernini, and from then on his style underwent a change, which –unmistakably – radiates from this wonderful group.
