The Musica Viva Tribe opens new doors to chamber music for young people as they experience performances by renowned international musicians on the concert stage. There is more to it than this: participating students will engage with professionals in the Arts scene; polish their own writing and communication skills; meet new people and make new friends.

REVIEW; ELIAS STRING QUARTET AT LLEWELLYN HALL, 5th SEPT 2013

As part of the Australian Musica Viva programme, the Elias String Quartet recently commenced their nationwide tour, playing in various Australian cities.  On the closing night in Canberra on the 5th of September 2013 at Llewelyn Hall, they played works by Haydn, Matthew Hindson and Beethoven. This young up-and-coming quartet played in almost perfect unity and brought out the essence of the pieces exceptionally well.

Of the pieces, perhaps the Hindson “String Quartet No. 2” was the most interesting. The unique sounds made by the instruments truly reflected the nature of the piece, and the piece was further enriched by the brilliant communication between the different instruments. The Haydn “String Quartet in F major, op 77 no 2”, reminiscent of some of Haydn’s later string quartets, was also played very charmingly. The finale of the night, Beethoven’s ‘Razumovsky’ String Quartet, although rather heavier than the other pieces, was brought to life by the players very well.

It was a great pleasure to have been able to watch this performance live and to experience the emotions of the players through their music in person. Overall, this was a wonderful and enjoyable concert to be enjoyed by music lovers young and old alike.

REVIEW; ELIAS STRING QUARTET AT LLEWELLYN HALL, 5th SEPT 2013

The Elias String Quartet projected their performance in a way that encapsulated emotion, style and communication. 

The communication from the first note was unbelievable. The intricate melodies perfectly in sync with each other as it was passed around. You can see the artists move as one, and play as one. The Hindson even though it wasn't my favourite style of music was amazing to watch. The syncopated and intricate rhythms were perfectly in time. All lead by the enthusiastic leader. Watching this amazing group of musicians has inspired me to strive to become a better chamber and solo musician.

REVIEW; TOKYO STRING QUARTET AT LLEWELLYN HALL, JUNE 6th 2013

At Llewellyn Hall on June 6th 2013, the Tokyo String Quartet performed their last concert together. They played works by Mozart, Sculthorpe, and Schubert, brilliantly. Their playing was engaging, and full of energy. It was easy to sit back in the audience and become engrossed in their musical world.

Of the pieces, the Sculthorpe, called “String Quartet no. 16” was perhaps the most interesting. The sounds coming out of the instruments were truly unique, and sounded like nature. The Mozart, which was the “Hoffmeister” quartet, was very long and slow in places, but beautiful, and very good. The 1st movement in particular was a stand out. The Schubert String Quartet was the no. 15 in G Major. They really played up for this piece, like they realised it was their last performance together, and it was very moving. The total length of these pieces was just a little too long for one sitting, although excellent.

It was really nice to be a part of an audience with a great variety of ages, from as young as 7 years to much older.

Being familiar with some of the pieces, hearing them live was like hearing a new piece of music, so much more engaging than just on a recording. The sound of the group was also incredible. It was like they were amplified, there was so much sound for only four people.

Overall, the concert was really brilliant, and a wonderful event.
