Jay is such a weird little purse dog who hasn't ever been outside bc what do you mean he sits down at a completely normal restaurant and looks around in complete disbelief muttering "oh wow" like he has never been in one before? what do you mean he doesn't realize Matt can get multiple different kinds of chips at a convenience store?? like Jay you are in your mid 30s wandering around your own city, the one you've lived in for years and years, looking lost and eating random food from strangers off the street! he has no self preservation instincts. he probably doesn't even know how to look both ways before crossing a busy intersection. he's going to get picked up by kidnappers without even realizing he's being kidnapped! just stay indoors Jay, it's probably for the best.

do you have any thoughts on jay (character) and food i think it’s an interesting through-line that he loves treats but had an overbearing mother who was weird about food as we see in the boy episode

ooooh yes! I love this, I've been rolling it around in my head since I first read this ask! Okay so I think there is really something to this. In my mind Jay honestly has a hard time nourishing himself. With food, with experiences, with life in general. I don't see him as super depressed or anything, I think a lot of it comes down to being completely unable to take any meaningful action towards anything. I know I've seen a lot of people floating meta about Jay's mom having an eating disorder and i definitely think that reading makes a lot of sense. In my mind, his mom is not only weird about food (the 3 bananas bit fully gives this away) but she's also just clearly weird about Jay resting and taking time for himself, even as a little kid. The way she talks to him about his videogame day genuinely makes me really sad, I feel like it has paralyzed him while also making him feel really ashamed and sick with himself over that paralysis. We see this play out again and again in canon too. Jay is always so sleepy, he's slow paced, he's not usually one to respond well to plans that force him into a lot of activity or new experiences. Yet he seems to want to want those things, if that makes sense. He wants to be a guy who can go to house parties, he wants to be able to enjoy spontaneous moments, he is so genuinely proud of himself when he doesn't completely flop at the improv class.

I think Jay's relationship with food is an extension of these feelings. He has never been good at taking care of himself, when he makes Matt soup when he's sick it's literally void of any sustenance at a. It's just broth and dill and even Matt asks him "where's the chicken?" I mean on one level it's like oh haha these are bachelors! of course they don't keep a well stocked fridge or know how to cook! But on another, it's like this act of offering up something empty in place of something filling. And this is further exemplified imo by Jay only requesting candy when he's the one who's sick. I think Jay's kind of fixated on sweets and candy because he treats it the way he treats almost everything in life and also the way people tend to treat and see him - something empty and pretty and briefly enjoyable but that never lasts or fills a space in any way that really matters or sticks. Superficially enjoyable. Sugar sweet boy.

And further we do actually see Jay being weird towards Matt about his own consumption several times. One very notable moment for me was when Matt chugs that glass of whole milk down in front of him and Jay looks pretty put off by it like "oh Matt I thought you said you were watching your figure?" about the thing that Jay GAVE him to consume!! That's like weird disordered eating almond mom bullshit 101!!! Like "Oh how dare you enjoy the thing I gave you to eat or drink in any way that isn't explicitly pleasing and appealing to me? Oh well you're just going to get fat." It's hard to watch or think about in a lot of ways bc it does actually feel so real lol. I also think he watches Matt eat with such fascination and rapt attention sometimes bc he isn't used to seeing someone appear so uninhibited around food, it's something that has clearly never been part of his life with his mom. But yeah. To sum it up, I definitely have lots of thoughts about this lol. Thanks for the question!
