Bring me that horizon
For the second part of our Sri Lankan adventure we decided to slow things down a little in the town of Hikkaduwa on the west coast. It was definitely my kinda town. Hikkaduwa is very much aimed at tourists but not in the traditional sense. You won’t find casinos or tat shops, in fact, there is only one larger supermarket, albeit filled with western products set at exorbitant prices. What you will…

Just take a moment and look.
This is Sirgriya, a UNESCO world heritage site in the Central Province of Sri Lanka, close to the town of Dambulla. The huge natural stone structure stands near 660 feet high, and atop this lofty rocky column is the ancient kingdom of Sigriya. It dominates the skyline and quite rightly too, it is something of a wonder to behold. At its base are several water gardens, considered to be some of the oldest landscaped gardens in the world.
There is evidence that the land surrounding Sigriya had been inhabited as early as the 3rd century BC/BCE, with the Aligala rock shelter showing signs of human activity nearly 5000 years ago in the Mesolithic Period. Astounding. It is said that in 477 AD/CE, King Kashyapa moved his capitol to Sirgriya, fearing that his half brother, the true King, would return from his self exile in South India and attack. He eventually returned with an army to defeat his brother and take back his rightful throne in 495 AD/CE, returning the capitol to Anuradhapura where it had been before. Sigirya was turned into a Buddhist monastery complex, and remained that way until the 13/14th century.
This is definitely worth a visit though I will say to wear comfortable shoes, it is one hell of a walk and I personally did not manage it due to the sheer heat of the day on which we went. Take a couple of bottles of water as there is nothing once you get to the top and you will most certainly be needing a drink after all of those steps. At certain places in the climb it does change from rock to metal stairs with narrow handrails, if you have a fear of heights or suffer from vertigo please be warned, you can turn around at the Mirror Wall and the Lion Gate. At the base of the trails you will find a circle of vendors selling local goods, most of these are overpriced as they are directly aiming at tourists. If you are lucky enough to have a personal tour guide perhaps ask them if they can get you a better deal.
I suggest you go early in the morning as the heat will not be as bad then, we left the hotel at 6am and travelled 3/4 hours by car to get there from Kandy. There is also a museum for avid history fans, and plenty of toilets before the water gardens and after, but none in between so go before you leave!
Thanks for reading!

It just occurred to me, as I’m going through the Harry Potter books again, that whenever Harry has visions through Voldemorts eyes that he always, every single time, distinguishes between himself and Voldemort with the mention of “a white hand held a wand which was not his own”, or something to the effect of describing Voldemorts whiteness. While I’ve always taken this as a comment on how Voldemort is inhumanly, disgustingly pale, It occurred to me that a dark-skinned Harry Potter WOULD notice the stark, shocking difference in hands every single time without fail.
Fucking here for it
Or, due to him being so pale like a corpse that anyone would fucking notice? Ffs
This scene right here. I think this is the first time in the series where Hiei is actually scared shitless. Yusuke can’t win against Sensui as he is and everyone but Kuwabara knows that. And both Kurama and Hiei know they don’t stand a chance either. The fact Yusuke is about to die is very real to them. It isn’t often Hiei shows any kind of emotion other than anger, but he is truly afraid here, and that still doesn’t stop any of them from going after Sensui to avenge Yusuke.
This is true loyalty, even though in this moment they have no faith that Yusuke will win.
