The Locket

I don’t know why the locket handover was such a powerful moment for me, but it’s one I keep coming back to, and keep rewatching. 

There’s something here made possible through Siobhan’s amazing acting, how Ruby is unable to string words together to make a full sentence, how she is struggling so hard to say what she desperately wants to say. Liam’s quiet incomprehension just underlines how vulnerable the moment is for them both, and how much goes unsaid. 

When he finally accepts the locket it’s in a moment of understanding that this isn’t something done for himself - he’s accepting because Ruby so wants him to, and can’t vocalize it. He takes it for her sake - not his. It makes my heart break every time. 

Anyway, here it is, because I wanted to record every stutter and half-word.

RUBY: You should keep the neck… you should…

LIAM: …

RUBY: Jet would… Jet wouldn’t want you to keep…

LIAM: … what?

RUBY: Th… the locket…

LIAM: (looks at the locket)

A Crown Of Candy (Episode 10 spoilers!?!)

I have so much curiousity around Senator Ciabatta.

Liam overhears him saying to his soldiers that it’s a shame he didn’t get the secret to making the watersteel daggers from Alfredi before she died...

But we know in episode 5 that when he investigated Alfredi’s lab with the twins, they found the schematics. He actively helped them uncover and understand the recipe (Brennan had him give the help action for about 3 different rolls the twins made concerning the notes about them.) It’s unclear who took the instructions, just as it’s unclear what papers he really did take/burn.

I can’t stop thinking about Senator Imperator Ciabatta - Plumbeline suggests him as emperor specifically to prove he is NOT the choice for emperor.

He says to the twins back in Alfredi’s lab:

“My homeland is full of honest and decent people. I know the notion of Ceresians are not popular. That our peoples were at war for a long time. In the times in history that Ceresia has allowed itself to be overcome by flatterers and liars, and people who wheel and deal in secrets, the honesty and decency of the common Ceresian has been made a laughing stock. Ceresians need not a panel of liars and whisperers. They need a strong man, honest and decent man.”

But then what’s he doing setting ambushes in Candia for?

It’s about a month into her stay at the manor, now, and Aelwyn makes a habit of disappearing into the background. She’s trying her damnedest to become just another spectre haunting the winding halls of the house, to be another ghost lingering imperceptibly near the dominion of the living. If she treads lightly enough, she hopes, then maybe she won’t kick up the light film of dust that’s starting to settle on her history.

Tracker doesn’t even look at her twice anymore, eyes settling on Aelwyn only long enough to register her presence and then sliding away, back to Kristen or Jawbone or someone else who actually deserves her attention. It helps Aelwyn breathe a little more easily, but she’s miles away from any kind of sense of belonging; she’s pretty sure her presence is an acceptable inconvenience at best. She knows that her feeling of displacement is only exacerbated by her inability (unwillingness) to connect with her housemates, her conversations with them largely limited to pleasant banalities. Rectifying that problem seems a herculean task, however, when Aelwyn knows how off-putting most people find her genuine personality. It’s safer, she thinks, if she sticks to discussing the weather over the dinner table.

Still, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t efforts to include her.

How is it roughly 36 hours until the next episode of A Crown of Candy? How has time moved so slowly and yet so fast this week? How have I rewatched the preview at the end of the last episode dozens of times - and yet truly cannot predict what heartbreaking line or story flourish the cast is going to add to the plot? Why am I in pain over hundreds of well-rounded and delightfully complex characters, who also happen to be anthropomorphic pieces of food? Why has this show made tears roll down my cheeks, and also kept a bit going for at least four episodes about Liam Wilhelmina’s sexy, sexy parents?
