Tamale House East is my second favorite taco place in town (I’ll make a post on my #1, Taco Joint, one of these days). I found out about it because its almost always the meeting place for Social Cycling Austin’s Caffeine Cruise, and now I can’t stop going back! I included it on a taco-themed bike ride I led last February, and they were everyone’s favorite, and so accommodating to our huge group. They only have one vegan taco on their menu, but it’s all you need: black bean, mushroom, and sauteed spinach. One time a cashier who knew his stuff told me to add potatoes to soak up the extra black bean juice. Spot on. Chips with guac is a tasty vegan app too, and their mimosas ain’t half bad either. Give it a shot, East 6th and Chalmers.
Since it’s Memorial Day Weekend and everyone is out grilling, I thought I’d share my favorite vegan burger in Austin. Allow me to introduce you to the bac’n cheezeburger from Arlo’s. I’m pretty sure they have other things on the menu, but I can never imagine myself getting anything else. There are even meat eaters who swear by this burger, that’s how good it is! From what I could tell the patty seemed mostly lentil and veggie-based (it’s gluten free, but the seitan bacon is obviously not). The cheese is daiya, which I’m usually not crazy about, but Arlo’s makes it work. It also comes with all the standard fixings and vegan mayo. Unfortunately for those of you born after ‘94 you’ll have to come for lunch, Cheer Up Charlies (the bar where Arlo’s is located) begins carding sometime in the early evening.
Restaurant name: Arlo’s
Location: 900 Red River Street, part of Cheer Up Charlies
What to Order: Bac’n Cheezeburger, side of tots.
Picked up this Capital City Bakery whoopie pie from Tom's Tabooley yesterday. Support local businesses for dinner and dessert!
Capital City Bakery is an all-vegan food truck southwest of the UT campus with just about anything a vegan with a sweet tooth craves.
Tasty vegan options at Tom's Tabooley: Veggie Wrap, Felafel Wrap, a variety of hummus flavors, dolmas, french fries.

This is a really useful post on Austin restaurants for vegans. I agree a million times over with everything said about Bouldin Creek.

OOTD: Austinnnnnnnnnnnn~
I took my sister to go visit my cousin in Austin. For those of you not familiar, Austin is the capital of Texas, but the capital of vegan food in Texas as well. lmao. they have a vegan option EVERYWHERE. it’s so awesome. We went to Sweet Ritual, a vegan ice cream parlor. I got a sundae with caramel, pecans, chocolate sauce, and marshamallows…. IN A VEGAN WAFFLE CONE LINED WITH CHOCOLATE AND SPRINKLES. I even got my marshmallows toasted. this place is the BOMB DOT COM. If you’re ever in the neighborhood, it’s definitely worth the trip.
TEXAS OR BUST!
Oreos (No, I didn’t get to eat any of these afterward. Cheese instead.)
Hey Oreos are vegan. And just about the only thing I can eat at Swirll. (Have you ever had frozen yogurt sorbet? It's gross.)
UPDATE
ALWAYS pay the extra dollar for daiya on the zucchini migas at Bouldin or forever hate yourself for the horrible, stingy choices you've made. LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES FRIENDS. Also, BROCCOLI TOFU SALAD. That is all.
HEY ZILKER BOAT RENTAL HAS A TWO HOURS FOR THE PRICE OF ONE COUPON! Get it here.
And once you're done kayaking the shit out of Town Lake, go to Bouldin Creek Coffeehouse and get the Tofu Migas. It may have just surpassed the Tofu Renedict as my favorite dish. It comes with seasoned tofu, zucchini, onions, and tortilla chips along with salsa, jalapenos, romaine, and your choice of tortillas on the side. Every bite is so spicy and flavorful and DELICIOUS. You don't even need to add the side of fruit or beans, it's plenty of food on its own. Remember to clarify that you're vegan so they'll put daiya cheese on it. Now excuse me while I enjoy the food nirvana I am still basking in.
*Almost* all of my post have been updated with hyperlinks to the websites of the mentioned restaurants. Enjoy!
Went to Wheatsville for a vegan ice cream run! Mint Chocolate Chip Hempmilk Ice Cream and my roommate's Raspberry Sorbet. Yummmmmm
OH YEAH AND THEY HAD A GIANT OUTDOOR SHOWER. Gotta beat the Houston heat somehow.
FIELD TRIP TO FREE PRESS SUMMER FEST IN HOUSTON. Vegan options galore, I'm tempted to say even more than ACL, and definitely more reasonably priced. It was a glorious weekend of music, heat, and impromptu mini golf. Love me some music festivals.
That vegan carrot cake I blogged about last week? This is it in cupcake form. Their vegan chocolate chip cookie is equally amazing. ESPECIALLY when dipped in a mug of bottomless coffee. YUMMAAAA
Nothing special vegan wise, just the usual salad options, but a nice spot on the East side to get coffee and play bananagrams. They do have an avocado wrap which is pretty good.
Whole Foods Flagship Store
The mother of all Whole Foods. Everything is clearly labeled as vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free. Ingredients usually posted in easy to find spots. More vegan options than I could possibly blog about in my lifetime. So I just picked the really unhealthy ones. OHHHHH YEAHHHHH.
