Modern headcanon
Ping was put to death when his former identity as mulan was revealed. Mushu waited centuries for him to be reborn. the young Mulan is posing as his deadbeat brother (Ping), and loving every moment, to take over the family business when Mushu reappears.

[I have got to take a wicked piss. At least at a party I don’t have to worry about urinals. If this little punk doesn’t move in 5 seconds I’mma punch him in the dick.]
[ That was the worse time for him to lighten up on his concentration, cause the thought that went through the other’s head made him move quickly out of the way. He did not need to get punch in any reign of his body. ]
"S-sorry, I..uh..d-didn’t realize I was…"
[ He motioned towards the bathroom door. ]
[Geez lighten up kid. I didn't actually kick you. He's jumpy enough that it's almost cute... almost]

Ferdinand yawns and blinks up at the smaller man, still dazed by sleep. “Yeah… not to day.” He pulls Ping down onto the bed with him, trapping him soundly between his arms. “I need at least a day’s warning. Spent all night doing paper work.”
"I’m older than you…" Ping sprang away gracefully. "Do you suppose your enemies will give you any warning?" From where he crouched on the ground he got a good view of a rather nice bottom… muscular and a good base for training he mentally corrects himself. When Ferdinand turns, Ping slides back to a standing position. "The rest of the cadets are waiting, Captain." Ping tosses Ferdinand a bo-staff and stalks out.
"Yes, they usually come marching in by their thousands with loud beating drums and colourful blazing banners." He yawns again and turns about. Was Ping looking at him the way he thinks he was? He has no time to muse about it as a staff comes flying his way and he has just enough wit to catch it in time. "You’re the Captain." Ferdinand calls after him. "I am just the stupid prince…" He sighs as he makes his way out of his room and down the hallway, following the smaller man.
"You Europeans really do have no sense of subtlety" Ping stops at a turn and wheels around to press the bo staff against Ferdinand's throat, "You will never speak that way in front of your men. It doesn't matter what I think of you or even what you think of yourself. If those men do not trust you with their lives they will lose them." He pushed the boy's chin up. "Stay strong... now follow me, It's time for me to make every single one of you cry."

Ping stepped off his ship and greeted the few Princes who had arranged themselves; each in turn with a firm handshake. He singled out Drew with a glare and a wrist crushing grasp, having instantly sized him up and decided he would be trouble. The decorated General returned to the ship to escort the emperor’s three daughters onto the dock, “Your Highnesses, may I present the Ladies Ting-Ting, Su and Mei.” He swept his arm to include the three ladies in his gesture as the were quite properly shielding their faces with their fans modestly. “Would one of you care to show us where they will be staying til the treaty is signed?”
Drew wondered if his intentions to seduce at least one of the daughters was written on his face. It wouldn’t surprise him considering how painful the general’s handshake was. Even with the fans covering them, Drew could tell the emperor’s daughters were beautiful and that made him more motivated to volunteer as guide.
"I can show them," said the prince, cutting off two of his other hormonally eager brothers.
Ping stood between the princesses and the predatory Prince. He waved a hand dismissively in Drew's general direction, "Very well, show us the way." This was going to be a very long trip. His first assignment as General and he was sent to this backwards country to secure a trade agreement. Ping thought he had proven himself better than that. Why were the Empror's daughter's here anyway? He glanced once up and down at the escorting Prince. Surely the Emperor didn't mean them to marry one of these barbarians.
"hello?Anyone here?"
"I must have been just about your age when I joined the army," Ping sweeps into a small bow, "General Hua Ping of the Middle Kingdom at your service. You may call me Ping, young man."
Peter tilted his head curiously then smirked bowing back ”I’m Peter Pan! Leader of the lost boys from neverland! It’s nice to meet ya Ping! That’s a funny name!” he chuckled crossing his legs as he floated in mid air
Ping pulled a sword, and brandished it at Peter. "What manner of spirit are you?" His heart raced.

"Last time I checked I was taller than you." He yawns but relents and let’s Ping go. With a groan he rises from his bed and pulls his night shirt over his head before making his way to his closet, naked bottom clearly on display. "All I am saying is a little warning would be nice. I have paperwork to do as well you know." He pulls a clean shirt over his head before tugging on a pair of pants and his boots.

A.be recalled by the ancestors when Mulan makes the decision to become Ping permanently
B.Still be traveling with Ping
C. Be recalled when Ping retires and there is no longer any danger of being put to death

He tossed the thief into the back of the cart by his collar, deciding to bring him in for trial rather than executing him on the spot. "You are lucky I am heading home rather than away.
