To celebrate editors in the fandom, the HBO War Video Archive is doing a spotlight series to learn a little bit about the people who make all of our favorite videos!
Today's spotlight (#20) is on @theweirdgoodbyes! She has been making videos for HBO War since January 2024. My favorite video of hers is "9 Crimes." It's a beautiful video that I think gets to the heart of the Webgott conflict really well. I love that it asks," Is this something they can work through?" and doesn't totally give us a definite answer. On a technical level, I think the soundbites are woven into the song so smoothly and effectively.

🎥 What made you want to start making fan videos?
The evil worm in my brain made me do it. It all started when I was a child...No but for real, I used to make crappy little AMVs on my busted ass desktop in middle school. Took a long long hiatus and started up again in January (I think) 2024!
💻 What program do you use?
CapCut!
💭 Where do you find inspiration for videos?
My lovely friends on Discord, finding a song that puts me in a chokehold, or just staring at the wall until an idea comes to me.
⌨️ Tell us a little bit about your process!
I usually start with narrowing down a section of a song I want to use, thinking of moments in a ship or show that feel applicable to the lyrics, and then assembling! Lots of trial and error and restarting until it feels right.
🗒️ What's your favorite part of editing?
Hmmmm this is tricky, I love it all but probably just fucking around with different filters!
🎬 What video(s) are you proudest of (HBO War or otherwise)?
Hmm, I’m proud of all of them but I think the Luztoye “Tough” one. I frequently go back to and I’m like, “yeah…fuck yeah!”
🪫 Do you have a video that got away? A great idea you never made? (Now's the time!)
ITS SITTING IN MY DRAFTS ON CAPCUT STARING AT ME. Maybe one day she will see the light of day…But it has to do with Sledgefu.
🖱️ What's something new you'd like to learn/try?
How to actually make captions; ho-lee shit does it drive me nuts not having it line up perfectly with the audio.
👨💻 Do you have any advice for other editors or someone who wants to try editing?
Have fun! Make what you want! Never feel scared to share anything; this tiny fandom is amazing and we want all the fanworks we can get.
