season 1 of fleabag will always be special to me because it is the first time I have seen characters who have fucked up in ways that are inexcusable and that can not be atoned for. the question isn't "how do we make this right?" because for fleabag, the bank manager and even martin there is no coming back from what they've done. the question that remains is "now what?" and the answer is: you try your best, you work to be better. "people make mistakes" isn't an excuse, it's a statement. even if there is no forgiveness in this life there is a remedy in just trying to do better in the future even if that won't change the past. the reason we all hate martin isn't because he kissed fleabag; both the bank manager and fleabag herself did things that were similarly bad if not worse. we hate him because he doesn't own up to it. because he never tries to be better or even wants to. where fleabag and the bank manager struggle to get their life back on track after (almost) loosing it all due to their mistakes he only desperately tries to avoid the consequences of his own actions.
