and the thrilling sequel: i consumed a media months ago and you are still hearing about it
and the cautionary conclusion: the media has consumed me
little thieves memes
New reading vlog is live!
It's a Little Thieves Readalong!!!
If you haven't heard yet, I've made it my personal mission to convince as many people as possible to pick-up Little Thieves by Margaret Owen. And with the final book coming out soon, now seems the perfect time to do a little readalong.
They. Are. Trying. They're gerrymandered all to hell.
But sure, mocking poorer areas for being impoverished and having shitty housing, complaining about having to "support your asses" and telling those oppressed by right-wing governments to "get an education" and "get a job" is really helpful here. All those stupid poor people not having good enough jobs so you have to support them. Very Blue position, Mx Blue State.
Fun fact! In 2018, Democrat Mike Espy ran for the Senate seat that Thad Cochran had vacated, and won 46% of the vote. In "deep-red" Mississippi. Without significant (if any) help from the DNC because, idk, probably that Mississippi is deep-red and he supposedly didn't have a chance. Had the DNC -- or anyone outside of Mississippi -- actually given a shit about Mississippi, he might have won.
Stop fucking giving up on the red states. It is fucking soul-crushing being a progressive in places like Mississippi, in no small part because of this exact mentality. Not only is the state gerrymandered to hell and the state government scorns, mocks, and silences you at every opportunity, but also because absolutely fucking no one outside the state is trying to help you because they apparently think you don't fucking exist.
Nobody gives a shit about Mississippi, which is how the Republicans have a supermajority across the entire state government and the GOP can use the state as their proving ground.
While at least 46% of the state do not want this and have no voice, and a significant further percentage probably don't want it either but don't think there's any point in trying, because, again, it's fucking soul-crushing to do so, and Mississippi is "a lost cause".
It doesn't have to be like this. Just fucking help us instead of sneering about how shitty red states -- especially the South -- are.

Stop putting AI-generated bullshit on my dash. I'll care about the cats who spell out "GAY SEX" with their bodies when it's art made by a human person.
AI is taking jobs from the artisanal "spelling gay sex with cats" artists this is so sad 100 like
The two that gave us not one, not two, but three hits on the first album they ever worked on together. Pre-add, pre-order, and pre-save 1989 (Taylor's Version). Out ONE MONTH from today! 🩵🩵🩵🩵🩵
I love how transparent you are about what its like to be a self published author in this day and age, and i was just wondering if there was a difference on your side between amazon ebook/paperback and audible - and also if Scribd is any better, because i use it as an alternative to amazon whenever possible (and whenever the library doesnt own a copy of whatever im looking for) is it functionally all the same? What is best for you?
Thank you!
I actually did a huge long post a while back when I got the audiobooks produced and uploaded to various platforms. I included Scribd in the breakdown after people falsely claim that Scrib is better for authors than Amazon/Libraries.
A lot of people were not happy when I burst that particular bubble by showing that Scribd paid me 97 cents out of the 19.99 price tag. Which is less than what Audible paid me.
Now, obviously, Scribd is different because it's a subscription service, and you’re paying for access to multiple things with that subscription. But saying it is better than libraries is just false because I also showed the numbers for that, and my income from libraries was several times higher than both Scribd and Amazon combined (for audio), which is why authors are always begging people to request their work in libraries.
Libraries pay us better and are usually free. Not always. I know it depends heavily on the country, but for most of my English-speaking audience, that is the case.
Now, this is not to say people shouldn’t use services like Scribd. If Scribd is what you can afford and it gives you access to things your library can’t fantastic. Please continue to access our work through that legal option. I would much rather earn 97 cents than zero.
But uh, yeah, Amazon pays me more than Scrib for digital stuff and I really don’t like when people who aren’t on the author side spread misinformation and frame it as some more “gotcha.”
The sad truth is Most retailers pay us the same or within the same royalty range. The difference I earn between Kobo vs Kindle is literal pennies with Amazon coming out on top. I make my work available on multiple platforms to give people options, but unless you’re buying directly from my personal storefront, it's all roughly the same.
I do actually earn more from Amazon paperbacks than I do any other retailers (for self-pub, paperbacks are a flat rate regardless of how much a retailer is charging), but the difference is about ten cents, so I always tell people to buy from wherever is best for them.
I like bookshop.org because they give some of the profit on their end to indie bookstores. Same with libro.fm for audio.
Audiobooks are just a whole fucking nightmare. Audible sets your price point for you and takes 80% of your royalties. And because Audible does that, I have to then use that price tag on all other platforms or risk being fucked by the algorithm gods. Other audio retailers take about 60-70% in royalties, most of them veering toward 70%.
As we say in radical acceptance therapy, it is what it is—fucking end-stage monopoly driven capitalism.
Now, speaking personally, when it comes to digital media, I earn the most royalties from my Payhip store where I keep 90% of my income.
That's the best place for me.
It's also why it's worth looking up an author you like to see if they have their own storefront. It doesn't help our sales rankings or put us on any bestseller lists, but frankly after launch week, who cares. I’ll take being able to feed me and my dog.
I hope that helps!
Genuine question, is there anything we the consumers or the writers can do to get better deals from Amazon, Audible, etc? Even 70% of your royalties seems like highway robbery.
@thebibliosphere
Ideally, the author unions (there are a few) would push for change, but access to said unions is prohibitive for many with lower sales or lower incomes. So basically, anyone in self-pub or indie-pub. This means they focus a lot of stuff on the problems of trad-pub issues. Which is totally understandable because, y'know, that's the majority of their membership, but... I don't know.
The whole publishing industry needs to be shaken to the ground and built back up again. Because yeah, Amazon is scummy, but it's not like publishing was a fair industry before they rolled in and opened up the self-pub market (arguably a lifeline for many marginalized authors trad-pub wouldn't allow to the table). They just exposed more of the holes and avenues of exploitation.
Basically, I don't know. I'm honestly too tired from trying to keep my head above water to think about it. Which I'm sure is the case for many.
But as a consumer, check to see if authors have their work available on their own site. It won't change the industry, but it'll help keep us fed.
If that's not an option, buy our work from your preferred retailers because money is still money, and we can't live without it. (This is an instance of where boycotting doesn't really help because it means we just don't get paid. A mass industry boycott wouldn't really work unless you're actively throwing money at authors through other means to keep us afloat.)
Support us through libraries.
Talk about the books on social media. Leave reviews, rec them to friends. Be really enthusiastic about the things you love because, honestly, even for trad-pub, authors' careers live and die by word of mouth.
But, yeah. The change has to come from the industry. It's not something that can be fixed with buyer habits. Would that it could.
I want to quickly add that indie authors do get a bigger slice of the cake from Amazon than traditionally published authors precisely because the publishing industry as a whole is Not Great about author royalties. Where an indie author gets 70% from Amazon and other places (give or take? I’m not that familiar with the royalty rates across platforms), a traditionally published author typically has a contract with their publisher that grants them 25% royalties on net receipts for every copy sold of an audiobook.
Net receipts, not retail price. So if a big five publisher has an audiobook up on audible for purchase at, say, £9.99, the author isn’t getting 25% of £9.99. They are getting 25% of whatever the publisher gets once Amazon has taken its share. And Amazon notoriously demands very, very hefty discounts*. The publisher may get £1.32 (number I just made up) for that audiobook, of which the author then gets 25%.
The same royalty rate is standard for ebooks as well by the way.
Support indie authors and buy from whatever platform they direct you to to buy their books. Support traditionally published authors by buying their books in print from independent bookshops.
* for an easily accessible breakdown of this, I always refer to Scottish independent publisher 404 Ink’s blogpost on the subject, they strive to make the industry more transparent and so they talk about money. Support indie publishers by buying from them direct.
A first-hand insight into 404 Ink's finances, following on from 2019's blog.
Thank you for the addition!
One other addition, because "trad authors have unions" is a misconception I see going around a lot! Authors in the US are considered contract workers, which means we do not have a right to collectively bargain. The Department of Labor is actually supposed to tackle that this coming month (Oct 2023) but at this moment in time, there is no labor union for authors.
There are advocacy groups and professional organizations such as the Authors Guild and the National Writers Union, but they are not affiliated with AFL-CIO or labor orgs, because as contractors, we cannot collectively bargain. ("but margaret," you say, "union is right there in the name!" it's also the 'u' in ACLU, which is.... also.... not a labor union.)
This isn't to diminish the work of either group, but whenever people wonder why authors don't go on strike, it's because current labor law does not protect us. For us, it's not striking, it's "breach of contract," which could lead to being sued by our publishers.
Now, before the end of October, that change to labor law could mean absolute scenes unfolding in a number of industries, including publishing! I dearly hope it does! But right now, our collective action options are limited.
I matched all my favorite Taylor Swift songs to books for the @erasreadathon. In this reading vlog, we go back to December, where sparks flew as I found FIVE new faves. I was enchanted to read eight books in thirteen days as I built my ideal Eras setlist.
I love when stadiums ask football players what their favorite Taylor Swift songs are bc it always varies from:
this player is being held at gunpoint
this player only knows You Belong With Me and Love Story
This player thinks All Too Well (10 Minute Version) is a deep cut and is very proud of himself
This player has tiktok
This player has a sister
This player is a Swiftie
the Kens, in order (the last one is both):

It's time to check-in on the quests from the last Fablen TBR Adventure and see what's happening next for me and Magdalene. The last we saw our heroes, they were headed back to Wandermere to find out how to break the spell binding a nearby clan of goblins to the bidding of a mysterious sorcerer. Will they be able to free the goblins? Will I ever be able to make a TBR I can finish? Come find out as I pull quests and decide what I'm reading next.
I started this 48 hour readathon with a plan... and that plan did not include a single book on my TBR. In this reading vlog, I will be reading books for #Realmathon's Peace Talks weekend. I give some manga a second chance and find two new favorites as I trying to read as many books as I can in 48 hours.
I'm a fan of her music, but do I like the same books as Taylor Swift? I picked three books she's talked about throughout h And then we her career andsettled down to read. Come find out: Does Taylor Swift read good books?
It fills me with such pride and joy to announce that my version of Speak Now will be out July 7 (just in time for July 9th, iykyk 😆) I first made Speak Now, completely self-written, between the ages of 18 and 20. The songs that came from this time in my life were marked by their brutal honesty, unfiltered diaristic confessions and wild wistfulness. I love this album because it tells a tale of growing up, flailing, flying and crashing… and living to speak about it. With six extra songs I’ve sprung loose from the vault, I absolutely cannot wait to celebrate Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) with you on July 7th. Pre-order now at http://taylor.lnk.to/SpeakNowTaylorsVersion 💜💜💜
OH MY GOD THIS IS IT! This is the one I’ve been waiting for T.T WE’RE FINALLY GETTING MY FAVORITE ALBUM I’VE MISSED IT SO MUCH
I’m so sorry, this is going to be my entire personality when it comes out.
