Max should have known that a series of moments standing out to him deserved a second thought.
The Mclaren's were fast. Lily was only a month old. And his hold on the number 1 was slipping with every race on the calendar.
But the whispers started just before Miami.
New Journalist a Verstappen?
Another sister for Max Verstappen?
They were easy to ignore, most rumors in the paddock are found to be wrong, and he had no reason to think he'd have another sibling. It was assumed that she was just another Dutch girl, and he moved past it.
Newly edited (I changed nearly everything about this piece) and ready for a reread! I will also be doing an partner piece to this scene, from Emily's point-of-view.
Thanks for reading!
A Women's Guide to Sports Masterlist
"Welcome to the first episode of something I thought I'd try in the very little free time I have, a podcast for women, by a woman, on everything sports related, although we'll mostly focus on football, ice hockey, and motorsport, my passions."
"You can say that again."
"Lu!" The woman scolds, "Ignoring my brother, my name is Emily Hughes and I will be your host, along with a guest most weeks from my many connections into the sports world. And often times, one of my brothers, Luke, Jack, and Quinn Hughes. Boys, say hi."
"Hey," They respond in near sync, making her laugh at how different their tones are.
"Now, you may be asking, Emily? They're the Hughes brothers, hockey super stars and all-together media's favorite subject, why has very little been said about you if you're their sister? Well, there is an explanation for this, and I will be turning the question to Q, as my oldest brother."
"Emmie was dropped on our doorstep when she was a newborn," Is Quinn's immediate answer, tone dry and convincing to those who did not know him well. He smiles at his sister, her shaking her head in response before nodding at him to continue with the truth, the story they've known all their lives. "Our parents were contacted by an adoption agency that specialized in special placements for children from well-off parents that did not want children, a thing most people do not know is a thing. But they reached out, knowing our parents were financially stable, and also well known enough to know how to handle any of Em's past that would pop up through her life, and asked if they wanted a baby girl. Mom had just had Moose, I think it was just before Thanksgiving? But she had wanted a daughter-"
"Hey-" Luke interrupts, giving the eldest Hughes a look.
"And so they said yes to taking in Em, who was just shy of a year old."
"I was only about a year and a half when we got her, and Q was about three, and we thought she was an early Christmas gift," Jack explains, chuckling as he leans closer to the microphone Emily has set up at her kitchen table. "I mean, it was cool enough to two young kids to get one younger sibling, but two? It was the best early gift either of us could have gotten that year."
"And then there were four Hughes, and Mom was still outnumbered," I chime, looking over the boys in front of me. "Somehow, we're 21 years in and somehow we're all still alive. Although they're more at risk than the sister finishing off a degree in sports journalism," I acknowledge with a chuckle. Sitting in classes or going on assignments definitely does not involve the same risk level as being a professional athlete.
"You say that like we're in constant danger," Jack gruffs, to which I raise a brow.
"Get back to me when you're not the one who literally had his tooth knocked out of his mouth a couple days ago," I remind, him scoffing. He knows he scared the shit out of me when I saw the blood, but he also knows we're collectively never letting him live this down.
Clapping his hands, Jack pulls our attention back together as Luke laughs, clearly not enjoying being the joke of the moment. "Aren't we supposed to be talking about sports or something?"
And I allow him this moment, because Jack's been hearing it from all of us since it's happened.
"Right! So, this week in sports-"
Oh my god... me? Alive? Back on Tumblr? Crazy! I'm starting my return by editing and working (finishing?) half finished projects, starting with Emily's story.

Lando Norris x OC Inspired by Mclaren surprising Lando with the puppies! I've had this in the drafts for a while, but was lacking a lot of writing drive lately, so we'll see if this gets me back into the groove!
The week began as they always do when we're just beginning the summer break.
Lan and I, lazying about the condo in the morning, simply enjoying each others company, before he is called off to MTC and I hop online for my asynchronis classwork.
It's our routine that I love so much, no matter how chaotic, before we take off on whatever adventures he has planned for us for the next few weeks.
Today was different though.
I spent the morning sick as a sailor, Lan holding my hair back and wiping my forehead with a damp towel. That is, until he had to go in to the MTC for a filming session, one he had convinced the uppers to allow Max to film for a Quadrant day in the life. His hesitance was written all over his face, but with a bit of convincing and the promise that I would invite a friend over, I was able to coax him out the door.
"It sounds like you've had a long morning," Kelly sighs with a frown, sitting across from me. When I had called her up, she and P were more than happy to come keep me company. There may be nearly twelve years between us, but from the moment Max and Lando introduced the two of us, it was easy to bring Kelly into my life as the elder sister I so dearly wished for as a child. And now she's here, her daughter's head fast asleep on my lap as I card my fingers through her hair.
"It's just that I am so rarely sick that to be this sick is more annoying than anything," I try to explain, "We're supposed to leave to travel with Martin in a week and I just can't keep being ill, my least favorite thing in life is feeling like I'm not up to my usual speed."
Kelly's eyes light up a bit, glazing over in a look of recognition. "Have you had any other weird symptoms lately? Anything you should keep in mind if you call the doctor?"
"Just some extra tenderness and I've been exhausted, but it's been a long few weeks with the double header and triple header nearly back to back," Its an explanation, one all of the girlfriends have discussed while sipping drinks over the weekends away.
The older of the two can't help but smile, "Dahlia, how about we run to the corner store and see about a test or two?"
A test? A test!
Oh my God.
sitting down to write isn't really about creating a story, it's about getting the story onto the page before it destroys me
this is how i feel every time i write. the story can be swirling in my head for days, bits and pieces, but it all flies out the window when i sit down to try to put it to paper, it always seems impossible. because you need a start and an end and pieces to tie it all together, it cant just be a moment.

"Please Ella, please please please!"
Forty-five minutes. From the time they announced we were landing to now as enter the hotel, Ivy has been adamantly begging for a roommate switch. For the past three weeks she and Jack have had a will they-won't they relationship filled with post game nights and pre-game lunches. It's for this reason that she so desperately wants to be his room buddy for the next 3 days.
"Please El, it's just a little favor, from one media girl to another."
Just a little favor. Just trading room keys with Jack so that he can stay with Ivy and I end up with his roommate. Nico.
"Plus, I mean, it's Nico. You've been into him sin-" Now I'm not about to let her finish that statement, putting a hand over her mouth to stop it in it's tracks, especially in a lobby full of Devils players and personnel who are all more than happy to relay my child-like crush to the man of the moment.

"You disgust me."
"You're my cousin and I'm horny for your friend, of course you're disgusted you wanker."
Clearly, my older cousin is not impressed by my comment's on his friends recent post.
Oscar's laugh from my left garners my attention, his quiet personality giving me a reprieve from Lando's noise for even a moment.
And for that he earns a smile, one Lando is not okay with.
"Hey! No! No smiling at him," He scolds, turning next to his teammate and waving his water bottle around, poor lunch tray disregarded on the surface of the table. "And you!"
"Me?" Poor Osc.
whats the best way to support fic writers on here?
okay great question!! i can’t speak for all authors but i feel like this would be applicable to most.
so i think the number one thing is reblogging. i’ve noticed an insane difference between the amounts of reblogs and likes. reblogging means our work gets spread to newer audiences which means more people can interact and read. liking is nice but it doesn’t do as much as a reblog could do.
u might say ‘oh but jayde!! my blog isn’t a (insert fandom blog)’ then u can easily create a side blog. i have! purely just for reblogging fics that i read.
also commenting/sending asks/writing nice notes about what you liked in the fic!! it doesn’t take too long and honestly it means the world. i always scroll through all the nice asks i get and it encourages me to keep writing! if you’ve really enjoyed something, let them know. if not, they might think no one liked it and be less inclined to create more.
this is less necessary but if you really like an author’s work, you can see if they have a ko-fi and buy them a coffee! but that’s only if you have the money. most of the methods i have mentioned are free!! hope this helps mwah <33

yay quinn on a well deserved norris trophy win!
"Oh my God," Is all I can say as Quinn's name gets called for the Norris Trophy. Jack standing to my left prompts my legs to do the same, trying my hardest to take a wiggling Ellie from Quinn while Cohen sleeps on my hip, just five months old.
My face nearly splits open from the smile I'm wearing, Quinn ducking in to kiss my lips as he places Ellie on my other hip, kissing the top of her head and the top of Cohens. He moves down the line, hugging Luke and Jack and his parents before moving to the stage.
"Here, Elle Belle, come sit with Uncle Jack," Jack offers, her running over as soon as she's on the ground to take a seat with her 'favorite' uncle.
Thank you, I mouth, Jack just smiling as Luke takes my hand that's not holding the baby to my lap, offering me a smile as the tears trail down my cheeks in joy.
Tears are in my eyes as Quinn makes it up, standing in a room of legends to take his trophy and the microphone.
"First off," He begins, smile bright as day. "I'd like to thank my teammates. It's a great group of guys, and - um -" He pauses, and although I've caught him on more than one occasion practicing for this moment in our bathroom mirror, he needs this moment to think through the next minute and a half.

All he could smell was the smell of sugar. Pure, glorious, sugar.
His trainer would hate him for even being in this shop.
But it was for his cousin, his cousin as sweet as this shop that had just gotten married. Who had gotten married and forgotten to pay the bakery that produced the dessert bar.
So here he was, standing in a random bakery, where the best piece of cake he had ever had was made was produced, as a favor to his grandmother who just insisted he was the only person able to delivery the check.
The front door was unlocked, but inside the lights were low, and empty spots on pedestals indicated that the owner's day was still beginning.
But his grandmother had insisted he was meant to arrive before open, that arriving around just after six in the morning was acceptable as he finished his run.
"¿Hola?" It's his way of announcing himself, something clashing in the back room where the fan of an oven whirs.
"Oh shit!"
Okay, so someone is absolutely here.

"I'm just glad you're okay-"
"Margaux, I told you on the radio, and I'll say it again, It was a light jostle, both cars were able to finish," Este assures, and while I know that's the case, it doesn't change the fact that he's my older brother, and his profession will never not make our family's heart race.
"I know, but I heard Verstappen's commentary and he sounded beyond angry, so I just wanted to be sure. The way he played it, it sounded worse."
Valteri snickers to my side, the second Mercedes driver clearly amused, but I understand why the Redbull driver is angry, he lost first. But to threaten the other driver like he did was beyond-
"Ocon!"
Oh no.
