hermes and persephone calling orpheus a 'boy' because they see the gentle childlike wonder and naivety in him
hades calling orpheus a young man because he sees himself in him
tbh I can't stop thinking about how i went into Hadestown being like "this is a tragic love story based on a greek myth I enjoy :)" and I came out the other side covered in blood being like "this is a thesis about how capitalism inevitably leads to both personal and global ruin, and so we are duty bound to resist it even as we lose, again and again and again. no matter how impossible it feels or how many times we fail and hit a wall and fall, we try again"
and like we will continue to loose over and over again, but we have to keep trying, not because we think we will succeed, but because if we stop trying, thats a fate worse than death. There is no happy endings here, but keeping trying is the lesser of two evils. I love this musical so much

Suddenly I'm holding the world in my arms
I've only seen Hadestown once. It was in a high school theater, put on by a relatively new youth theater collective. Nothing terribly special, but there's one thing I'll remember forever.
The Fates, in myth, weave threads of life. This performance gave the fates a red string. In Doubt Comes In, the moment Orpheus turned around, they cut the string and used the two halves to pull Eurydice back to Hades and to hold Orpheus back from going to her. And, more than that, Orpheus didn't sing her name. He screamed it.
That moment, that Orpheus screaming and lunging after Eurydice despite being literally held back by fate, is something I'm never going to forget.
thank you hadestown for rewriting my brain
