The armorial Sunburst badge of Windsor, first used by Edward III, is a visual pun, as much of medieval heraldry was; the sun and clouds form an image of “golden wind,” or “winds or”: Windsor.
topics apparent in traditional christmas carols that have Strangely Disappeared from modern canon:
the devil
the lord of this manor better give us booze or we’ll burn his house Down
alternatively, give us some cash
this plant is Red like the blood of Childbirth
i was wooed in the sheep field
what up, it’s the Devil again
goods or tuppence may be exchanged for a viewing of this wren we’ve killed
SWORD DANCE TUNES
we sing in thanks of the maidservant who let the mob into the laird’s home
dancing is a sin but do you think i’m gonna stop
unlikely
the apple crop better be good or next year it’ll grow fertilized with your blood
the winter is cruel but the laird is crueler
the church is also cruel
it’s lucky to give us money. in this case, the luck is not getting stabbed
really there are so many bangers
WHY WAS HENRY VII A GOOD KING
WHY WAS HENRY VII A GOOD KING
He ended the Wars of the Roses (finally!)
The Peace of Étaples was signed with French King Charles VIII (he was of house Valois, just an interesting point) which assured the peace between France and England .. here comes the short sotry about this guy Warbeck claiming that the English throne was his and France supporting him and then England invading France and then an agreement that France will pay England some money but the rule over Brittany will be French
This treaty was quite a clever decison to do because it definitely helped much destroyed English economy. He also improved trading
He came with a good plan how to reduce the taxation of English products in the Netherlands by putting an embargo on them for supporting that Perkin claiming to be the son of Elizabeth Woodville and Edward IV. the Netherlands having quite an economy partner in England agreed to reduce taxes.
Portsmouth became the first dry dock and once again imporved trading.
He signed the peace treaties with Spain and Scotland and Rome.
He improved the justice system. By setting up the Star Chamber, he made sure that not even noblemen could hide from their punishments (back than, if you were rich enough, nobody would dare to touch you). Justice of Peace was now more used, it was given power to reject the Parliament´s acts, it also prevented the corruption.
He had no illegitimate bastard children born after the marriage. (He had one son Roland de Veleville born in 1474 - Henry and Elizabeth married in 1486)
The young boy pretending that he was Earl of Warwick (son of Geroge of Clarence and his wife Isabel Neville) was spared life and given job. (The real Edward of Warwick was put in the Tower and executed later, though but his sister was spared) .
-He spared Richard’s nephew and designated heir, the Earl of Lincoln (but two years later he organised a major Yorkist rebellion and was killed on battlefield) -He was a financially prudent monarch who restored the fortune`s of the bankrupt exchequer and under his reign England prospered financially and culturally -He subsidized shipbuilding, thus strengthening the navy -He was the first King in Europe to recognize the importance of the newly united Spanish kingdom and signed the Treaty of Medina Del Campo in 1489 -He bethrothed his daughter Margaret to James IV of Scotland thus creating an alliance that would see the English and Scottish Crowns unite under one of Margarets descendants
(and of course his devotiion to his wife. He never had mistress and never remarried after her death despite the necessity for Kings to wed for alliance and politics purpose)
i could go on
Henry also looked after the illegitimate son he had before his marriage : Roland was brought to the Court and knighted in 1497 after the Battle of Blackheath, and was then appointed Constable of Beaumaris Castle in Wales.
of course we could do the same post with Why was Henry VII a bad King, but that is not the point (and let’s be honest, only the last years of his reign were ruthless, when he turned into a total parano because…? because…? because Lizzie was not there anymore *MY BABIES*)

Would anyone be interested if I picked up Arthur Morgan from Red Dead Redemption II as a muse tho

You come by it honestly, the ugliness inside you… You were born broken. That’s your birthright.

Send me “HC” + a word and I’ll write a headcanon about it.
Also, every introductory English history book ever: Oliver Cromwell and his Puritans were sooo hardline! They even *shocked whisper* banned Christmas
Scotland, in the corner, turning the pages of its newspaper: …uh-huh…how terrible of him… totally the worst thing Cromwell did… I mean who would ban Christmas…
