Top 5 tips and things to remember if youâre going to survive UK Freshers Week and Starting Uni
Here I am, starting my blog off with a bang, cliche and overdone, but a bang none the less. Iâm a second year at University so I would say I know my way around a freshers week, or 2, or 3 (Including âRe-freshersâ week*)
1. The number 1 thing that came in the most handy when starting Uni was a doorstop. Itâs stupid I know, but this little device that stops the door, quite literally opens the door to new friendships and opportunities. Your new flat mates are just as nervous as you are and that one gesture of leaving your door open while you unpack is the perfect chance for them to walk past and start a conversation. DOORSTOP. Trust me on this one.
2. Organise with your flatmates which events you want to go to in Freshers week. Buy the tickets and actually GO. The events may have ridiculous themes, like animal dress up or Louis Theroux. (Love u Mr Thorax) but they actually do help you meet people and that makes the entire concept of starting the course a little less daunting. I met my first friend on the course on âThe Big Bar Crawlâ where we drunkenly bonded over the fact we were going to be hungover at the 9am we had the following morning. #Goals
3. Donât shit where you eat. Both literally and figuratively. But mainly, donât sleep with anyone on your course or in your flat/house, especially not in the first week of Uni. It happens all the time and I am yet to hear a story of a Freshers week romance that worked out. Although, my boyfriend is my flat mate but thats a different story. Â
4. Stay hydrated. In Fresherâs weeks there is alcohol. Which means there is hangovers. I know drinking tonnes of water when youâre hungover feels like youâre drowning on the inside, but liquids are the key to recover and coffee especially, is the key to making it to those 9am torture sessions youâre timetabled for.Â
5. Make the most of it. First year is the best time in Uni. Iâm only a second year and I already miss being a Fresher. Enjoy the fact youâre the newbies and that your lack of knowledge is excusable. You only need 40% to pass the year and as said by every lecturer ever, âFirst year doesnât countâ.
ENJOY.
*Re-freshers being the week returning after Christmas break which is essentially a continuation of opportunities to make poor life choices, just like Freshers week in September.
