International Women's Day

Remember that you are rare, you are unique, and you have something special to bring to this world. If you feel you need permission (which you do not) to be a badass, to forge your own path, to say "screw the rules", this is it. Use the gifts you were given and make magic. Nurture the fire inside you and move mountains. Have the courage to fight for the things you need and deserve. Change the world- for yourself, for your daughters, for your grandmother, for your ancestor that picked up her entire life and moved across oceans to keep you safe and give you opportunity before she even knew you would be born. International Women's Day, the Women's March, etc is about creating a positive community for women, girls, everyone. It's about giving them the empowerment and inspiration they crave and the tools to go out and make a change. It's about giving them the applause they deserve when they make our world a better place for all of us, because strong women celebrate other strong women.

I am genuinely confused about what I am seeing on Facebook (and in life) everyday. Since when is it okay, in any society, any culture, any religion, to completely disrespect another human for a reason so small as a differing opinion. 

Discussing opposing beliefs is great, it's how we grow as people, but disrespecting and verbally assaulting "friends" on Facebook because one person marched and one person didn't, or because one person voted and one person didn't is disgusting and immature.

Calling yourself a "real women" or "real American" because you are pro-this while someone else is pro-that is baffling to me. 

I am a woman because I AM. I am an American because I AM. My choices and my opinions have no impact on those things and you have no right to devalue my worth as either because you disagree with me.

Think before you speak. Spread LOVE and ACCEPTANCE. Be KIND to one another.

Instead of having a new year's resolution, I choose to start each year with a word or phrase to live my life by. This year I chose "have faith, give grace." Martin Luther King embodied this idea and seeing this quote today inspired me to share it with all of you.

Having faith in yourself, in humanity, in the universe, in God, in magic, in whatever you believe is important in order to keep moving forward as an individual and as a world. If you don't take that first step towards change, you'll be stuck exactly where you are, and in turn the world will not have the chance to benefit from all the greatness you have to offer.

Giving grace is something we all need to do more of. There's many different views on what this means or how one gives grace but to me (and to some nice people I've talked about this with), it's this: Giving grace means treating others with respect and love no matter the circumstances. Forgoing your pride and selfishness to consider the needs of others. Always lending a helping hand and sharing your blessings. Being kind and choosing forgiveness and acceptance even if you don't fully understand. And most importantly, doing all these things for yourself. Love yourself, forgive yourself, and accept yourself. Be kind to yourself and give yourself grace as easily and freely as you give it to others.

Today while I was working at The Plaza Hotel a man dining at the Palm Court invited two homeless men in to eat with him. They were there for a while, chatting and laughing with each other.

This is what the Christmas season is all about. We can't all buy steaks and whiskey sours for a few people on a whim, but we can make small gestures of kindness and generosity to each person we encounter. ❤️
