Kalle knew of passing gazes and wandering interests in regards to him. Many had wanted a quick fuck from him–wishing to try whatever bedding a Beast had to offer. It was something simple and transparent, something he could comprehend, whatever carnal desires found in man often expressing themselves to Kalle when others gazed upon him. He’d heard filthy things before, men babbling over their drink what it would be like to be with a Beast and another offering to hunt down a Beast prostitute to try the whole thing. Feliks had never been such a sort, which was why the sudden interest perplexed him in a relationship that had been established as platonic, even if at times Feliks was capable of some actions that sent Kalle’s heart to peculiar places, pulsating in manners it ought not to for a dead man.
❝ My features are fine, eh? Is this an objective statement or something of personal interest? ❞ It was asked cautiously, experimentally. His fingers tightened their grip upon his tankard. What were they? What peculiar dance of courting were they going about at present? He’d heard of Lady Gloriosa’s interests in the Third General, the woman having practically dropped to her knees in mournful apology for having wandering interests. Kalle had waved away such apologies and had said that it was nothing. In truth, he himself was still in a position of attempting to comprehend the nature of he and Lady Gloriosa’s relationship. Though there was indeed something that ought to have made the gods weep behind closed doors, Kalle was far too frightened to place a proper label upon it. Kalle had also perceived Feliks’ interest in Lady Gloriosa and had thought that he could provide whatever emotional stability and maturity Lady Gloriosa required–that of which Kalle lacked.
What had further confused the arrangement within his mind was the sudden declaration of his being something of an attractive sort. He hadn’t thought Feliks watched him in such a manner, having assumed their relationship strictly platonic. His heart clenched in his chest and he almost felt sick then.
He was, allegedly, a monster incapable of love–how could he fancy two people at once? One of which he knew intimately, the other he was beginning to tread gray waters with.
feliks wasn’t most human men in skywall, and kalle knew that. still, he understood why kalle might have reservations, and so he’d restrained himself ever since he came to terms with his personal feelings. he wasn’t most human men in skywall, but he did look like most of them, with dirt smudged under his fingernails from hard work and an easy smile that indicated lack of hardship. of course, he’d dealt with his own struggles---the death of his brother, poverty while he was growing up---but he lived comfortably now, and lacked the restrictions Beasts had. feliks would never experience that variety of prejudice, and he recognized that.
“they’re exquisite, really. maybe too exquisite.” he didn’t mean to sound curt, but there was a definite, clipped note in his voice now. it was difficult NOT to be bitter, particularly when his feelings had been hurt so obliviously. feliks held an admiration for the other man that he didn’t even see---and kalle apparently misconstrued even the most genuine of praise for a future game of cat and mouse.
there was also the matter of lady gloriosa, who was undeniably attracted to them both (and the general couldn’t say he blamed her). feliks had had the PLEASURE of speaking to her, of eliciting bubbly laughter from plump, rosy lips---and while he had lavished her and kalle both equally with his attention, the latter was more stubborn, and he occasionally felt a pang of guilt in his gut whenever kalle saw him interacting with the princess. feliks knew of the chemistry between them, saw it in the way they looked at each other, and yet---well, unconventionally enough, he found allure in them both. he was drawn to the softness of gloriosa and the contrasting edges of kalle, intrigued by what balance they may provide. he wasn’t bound by preference, either; both made his heart pace in ways it hadn’t in years.
“barman, another drink,” he barked to the man behind the counter---who, knowing feliks as a regular and regarding him as Third General, asked no questions. he only grunted and nodded in answer before turning to the row of kegs. feliks’ eye flitted to kalle again, a blank, overcast sky with a black pupil sun. “do you need one, too?”

❝ Well–I only–maybe you’ve had too much to drink. ❞ He studied his drink intently, ignoring whatever machinations of his heart suddenly rose to prominence. It was better not to dwell upon it, really. ❝ I really can’t comprehend some of the things you say. I’m used to you speaking to women like this–but me? Surely you’ve had too much to drink. ❞ Kalle let out a strained laugh–embarrassed, uncertain on how to behave.
in truth, feliks hadn’t been focusing too intently on his drink tonight, far too swaddled in his thoughts. there’d been a sudden influx of crime in the Beast neighborhood lately, theft of valuables and precious family heirlooms. he had no doubt in his mind that these wrongdoings were being perpetrated by heartless humans, for who else could be so indifferent to the value of such possessions?
here and now, sitting in the Beast-sanctioned tavern with kalle, he knew that his personal matters of the heart were mere TRIFLE compared to what Beasts had struggled with for lives and generations. and yet still love had him by its clutches, determined to let feliks focus selfishly on the way his heart pounded whenever he saw kalle---saw gloriosa---thought about past passions that still set him aflame with yearning. gods, how he longed to feel it all again.
“i’m sober, kalle,” he simply answered, though a large hand DID instinctively reach for his tankard. the general needed to feel something other than pure humiliation, he thought as he gulped down whatever mead remained. “still, it might be wise to ignore that i even said anything---you would expect such foolishness from me, would you not?”
it stung, but such advances were futile.
